Ok, so I'm pretty far in, next main quest is in the Arbor Wilds, and while I have the option to start a romance with Dorian, I am not able to with Cassandra.

I'm a human mage, I made the mages free members of the Inquisition, let the Grey Wardens join, and helped Celeste stay in power.

My question is, have I done anything to prevent me from ever romancing her? Or is her romance bar just really high?

Did you do her quest where she asks you to kill 5 targets in five maps and complete it?

 

Did you get her quest where she's reading a book and follow that to its end?

 

Did you get her quest where she asks you to track down the missing seekers and follow that to its end?

 

Did you gather the supplies to woo her and begin the romance?

 

She doesn't have a high bar.  The seeker one is main story gated at some point (don't remember which specifically probably after warden/empress at least).  If you haven't been milking her dialog for approval and getting lots of disapproval that could explain her seemingly high bar.

 

I had enough approval to start the romance shortly after finishing the seeker quest.

 

EDIT: And you can flirt with everyone and anyone every time the option comes up, but if you're not paying attention you could start a romance with someone that locks you in with that person.  When you select the heart it will warn you with flavor text that this is starting a romance.  And sometimes you might find The Iron Bull in your bedroom unannounced if you shamelessly flirt with everyone.

when you say 'start' to romance dorian, have you ever picked an option that says 'initiate romance with dorian'

Because if so.. they yeah you're locked out of other romances, even if you break up with dorian

 

I did mild flirting with basically everything with eyes, but yeah initiating a romance locks you to that one
