Story/Content/Roleplay wise, which brings more to the table? Human Male Mage, or Female Elven Mage (Solace Romance)? (No Spoilers!)

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding what I want to roll for my first (and MAIN) playthrough. On one hand, I could play it safe, and roll a Male Human Mage. On the other, I could take a risk and roll a Female Elven Mage (who romances Solace) - which I feel would bring so much to the story. I was wondering from players who have played through a while as one of those has to say. I'm heavy on my characters fitting the world and lore, and don't want to get in 30 hours into the game to realize I made the wrong character choice.

If it helps at all, I'll be playing a Knight Enchanter. (I refuse to play Male elf because of the well documented body issues.)

TLDR; Which brings more to the Inquisition story line, and makes for a deeper, better playthrough? Human Male Mage, or a Female Elven mage who romances Solace. I'll be siding with the mages, also, along with denying any (Herald of Andraste) claims that people put on me, no matter if I roll a Human, or Elf.

--For those that say female Dalish Elf, is it hard to immerse yourself with that playthrough?

Not really playing as a female Dalish mage brings a lot to the table. Without spoiling anything let us just say the romance option and the fact you support mages -- allows for a lot of dialogue and interactions that you might not get with a non-rival relationship for a male character

Appreciate the answer. I do feel that the Human Male Mage just isn't that unique. I've heard lots of positive feedback about female Elven mages.

Honestly, Female Dalish is probably the way to go if you want the most unique playthrough. The way you deal with Herald of Andraste, all the elves you encounter, etc. It's all great while the human mage is fairly generic.

I guess my next question would then be, is it hard to immerse yourself into the shoes of a female Elven Mage? I love the sound of unique gameplay, which is why I want to play it, but if it just doesn't make sense, and it doesn't feel right playing it, it kind of defeats the purpose of an "RPG" I guess.

also: Sorry for the obnoxious thread title guys, just noticed that lol.

My first play through was as a female Dalish Mage.  I found it very compelling, deep, emotional, satisfying.  For me, it impacted me so much, that I don't think any other play through is going to feel as important as this one did.  I am someone that plays BioWare games many, many times.  I love seeing the other side of my choices, and different romance arcs, etc.  But Lavellan and Solas, oh my.  I have to say that I absolutely love the story in this game.  For me it just might be my all time favorite.

Basically what I am saying is that I personally feel that female Lavellan is quite possibly the best/most important story line.  But that is an assumption on my part as I have not played as anything else yet.  (Currently struggling with a human warrior and missing my Lavellan).

Now that is a good answer, definitely just made me want to choose that as my main inquisitor.

Was it easy to immerse yourself in this character?

Surprisingly, yes.  I don't dislike the Dalish, but I can't say I every really felt compelled to play one in this game.  It was on a whim, really.  Considering how the Dalish are regarded, and how mages are treated; it seemed like the most opportunities for a more compelling story, as a so-called Herald of the Andrastian faith.  And I wasn't disappointed on that front.  I played my Lavellan as very open minded and curious.  She was also kind, playful, and wanted to help as much as she could.

I am very attached to her.  The acting was incredible, Alix did an amazing job.

Between those two, definitely go with the female elf + Solas (unless you're just really, REALLY set on romancing Cass or Dorian or just love to play humans in general, lol). It completely changes one's perspective on the narrative.

My humble opinion, of course.

That's sounds great. I was thinking of making my Lavellan very rejecting of the "Herald of Andraste" phrase, as it wouldn't really make since to be accepting towards it seeing as she was the The First in her Dalish Clan, which would mean she follows the old gods. I could however role her as somebody who only joined the Dalish as a means to survival and knowledge. Now that I think about it, I'm having trouble deciding, lol.

I absolutely agree with _Lucinia.

However, make sure that you are able to completely emotionally detach from your character if you decide to go this route.  I was not, for various personal reasons, and I do regret making it my first playthrough.

I just keep thinking to myself, when were importing saves into DA4 (assuming their will be one) will it be awkward for history to say that the inquisitor was a female Dalish Elf mage?

Reasons like this are almost why I WANT to make it my first playthrough. Aside from the fact it's so meaningful and in depth, it was also my first playthrough, making it even MORE meaningful.

Nah, it'll be epic. I can't wait to see what's gonna happen in DA4 for a Solas-romancing Lavellan because ~spoilery reasons~.

Haha, sadly that is one thing about Bioware games (the good ones, Inquisiton, KOTOR, etc.) . Theirs always that one story that gives you the feels forever, and you just cant detach. Honestly that goes for most GOOD role-playing games.

I'd also hate to play an entire playthrough thinking (man I'm playing an inferior story, cant wait for these 60 hours to pass so I can play Lavellan!)

You must have slightly masochistic tendencies like I do!  Totally kidding, I don't see myself as a masochist, but I am a sucker for stories that can move me emotionally whether it is joy or sorrow.  I am so glad I chose what I did as my first play through.

I'm glad you replied when you did, I just wanted to PLAY the game. I'd spent hours recreating and deleting characters, but that paragraph you first wrote sold it to me! Now I just need to create a B.A. looking female dalish.. Shouldn't be too hard, she's Dalish...

One more thing if you choose this route -- have Cole and Solas in your party!

I absolutely was going to have Solas, I don't know much about Cole, I haven't met him, but I will remember what you said when I do. I'm a KE so it shouldn't matter who I keep in my party since I'll wreck everything.

Female elf mage! You get some really nice racial and class specific dialogue options. And due to the impact on the main story, Solas romance is really powerful.

I never really liked playing as an elf in the DA universe, but I'm loving it in this game.

Thanks for the response. I love what I keep hearing about how powerful the female dalish elf mage story is.

Female dalish elf mage was my first playthrough and I really enjoyed it. Being both an elf and a mage brought a unique perspective to playing this character, but I did not romance Solas. I am tempted to replay to see what his romance his like though.
