If this were a matter of Morrowind vs. Inquisition, then it'd be no hard choice to make on my end. Skyrim for all it's pretty graphics felt like an empty shell compared to Morrowind and it's subsequent expansions, though I'm sure people also feel the same in regards to Daggerfall and Morrowind. In terms of Inquisition and Skyrim, however, I much prefer the writing in Inquisition. The writing in Skyrim was spotty at best, with some factions receiving stellar stories to go along with their quests and others being honestly nothing special. In the end it's up to personal preference.
Do you prefer a huge open world with very little written substance where you can do whatever you want, but at the sacrifice of the overall story?
Or a more restricted world where the writing is the center focus and the shenanigans you can get into are tapered off as a result?
Good food for thought. I enjoy both games for various reasons. No debate about Skyrim's writing being spotty at best, when compared to DAI's story.
To answer your question, I would prefer to have both open world exploration and stellar writing to draw me in even more. Even though story is an integral factor for executing immersion in an RPG, if I had to choose one, I would choose a vibrant open world with rewarding exploration.
Both games have replay value, but with a game like Skyrim, every new character is a new adventure you create as you play through the game. Whereas in DAI, every new character you create, more or less follows the same path of being the Rift Sealer, making different decisions, choose different skill trees while deciding who will rule over the Divine. 2 prisoners with different destines.
