Can I just say to those of you who refuse to craft you NEED to stop doing that. Most of the supposedly higher quality loot comes from bosses and scripted tough fights, some few come from  those astarium caves, such as the purple bow in storm coast, but MOST of the time the higher end gear you get from numerous sources is 2-3 levels higher than you, such as the staff my mage qunari got at 11 when the staff is 13, or 4-5 levels below you and thus, no longer valid as gear. You CAN craft better items than what the game offers as loot from the war table, or from quest rewards or from specific enemies. In fact...at lv 5 even you can create better items than the game offers you as generic grey loot. You can craft gear that offers you better stats, can even craft gear that heals you. [tho not at that level] And this is why if you refuse to even bother attempting to craft yourself better gear in this game, because you feel you don't have the inclination or the time or are just damn lazy, well then you deserve to die in the game, you deserve to find it hard going, you deserve to get owned.

I too by the way don't agree with how bland the combat feels in this game, but actually with my dwarf hunter who is 11, and my team who are 10, we can kill the bears in the storm coast in the space of 20 seconds. It does NOT take 50 fireballs. It does NOT take 100 attacks. It takes one round of each of the 3 attacks my hunter uses, and then if the bear is STILL alive after my group have pummelled it, maybe it takes one more backward flip volley attack from my hunter. And then that bear is dead or has a tiny slither left and I let the bull or blackwall deal with it. Half of the gear my team uses is crafted. Up until not long ago I was using a crafted bow, and do similar numbers to the purple bow from the storm coast. My inquisitor has a dwarf coat on, and will be using that blue scout hat you get from that place at the end of long river, and her accessories are nothing to shout about. My team is similarly garbed with average to slightly better than average...in fact, only blackwall has a purple armour piece on him, the rest are in blues at the most...

There were a few times I encountered overwhelming odds on Nightmare settings. After investigating, I discovered these tips:

* Make certain you have your gear adorned; not sitting in Inventory.
* Keep potions stocked on characters.
* Tactical retreats from foes is a permissible option, esp when they are several levels higher in strength.
* Berserker effect on items make for better profits by selling them; make for dead characters when using them.

I disagree. Even on nightmare, I think it's pretty easy (boss fights are defenitely difficult, but not many other encounters are challenging).

If you want to make it easier, I would strongly recomend upgrading health potions and getting the extra potions perk.

Edit: BTW, I think there is no need to craft. Not even to wear unique equipment.

I've played this game on all four difficulty levels now.  Started on normal and won, went to casual and won.  Skipped to nightmare and got killed by Gereon Alexius a zillion times.  Dialed that game back to hard and won.  Started three different inquisitors before going with a mage on Nightmare and have progressed it to Skyhold so far.  I will say that for me casual, normal and difficult all felt the same.  Nightmare feels harder up to Skyhold.  So far it does not feel that much more difficult.  Having said that, everyone has a different play style in regard to this game.  The first couple rolls I literally did no tac cam and just barreled through enemies.  This run I've been more more selective in how I decide to murderize mobs.  I am playing more tactically.   But it took me several runs before I started playing the game this way.  And each run through I've gotten more selective in how I level and how I craft.  So even for seasoned gamers like myself there is always a learning curve.

Edited for typos.  They kill a broad.  Oops.

I admit complaints about casual being difficult baffle me... Mind you, I haven't actually played on casual, but on normal the game feels almost ridiculously easy at times, and I'm no mlg 1337 player.

I don't craft, at all.

I barely touch the tac cam.

I took a specialization for my SnS warrior way late into the game.

I went to battle Vinsomer (was that its name?) and everyone in my party but me died, so I soloed it. I don't think I ever fully lost my guard in that fight. I just basically followed it when it relocated, and hit whatever ability wasn't on cd (and didn't require me to hit L2 to see it, cause I'm lazy). You defeated.

I just don't see what needs to be nerfed for the game to be easier? No combat at all? What's left of the game then? The 'roleplay' component sure isn't worth it.

I can't believe you're serious

This game was so boringly easy to me that I had to turn up the difficulty to nightmare, and I rarely crank up the difficulty in games

Maybe those who think this game is hard...don't really play many games and the ones they do play they either do so with a lot of cheats, know like the back of their hands or are very easy games anyway, that WANT to be beaten easily. I don't think this game is easy or hard. Frankly I was expecting a significantly better game than this, and am saddened how Bioware have simplified so much.

There is no Required party comp... Some people solo.. On Nightmare.. I actually thought the game was painfully easy..The beginning Demon was annoying, but only because you have nothing.. The only time i ran into difficulty, was on Nightmare, trying to fight the Templars in defense of Haven..Everything else, ive complained just how easy it was.. Tedious, to the brink of pulling out hair, nails, and teeth,  but easy...Im actually a bit surprised to see a thread stating its too hard, tbh. I came in expecting a troll.. You probably always want a tank, and a mage..But, its rlly not "a must"..The only time youll need to be more stringent with yourew party choice is on NIghtmare..I found hard(which i started with), to be a bit underwhelming..
