The great thing about them is the control you have, how you can engage and disengage. However

, i noticed the AI is really really bad with them. 

Varric, Cole and Sera will run right up to opponents with bows....and then die. 

 

They never run back or retreat backwards and use range. They stay where they are or run close. 


I would say this about mages too, but they are stationary and have vew moves to create distance.

Try setting Stealth and Leaping Shot to preferred in your tactics. Or if you really want them to get out of trouble automatically take Evade as well and set it to preferred. They will generally use these abilities immediately when attacked/threatened in melee range.
