Pretty much anything + Stonefist works well. Most classes can only trigger basic ability combos by themselves. Rift Mages can use cross-class combos on their own because Stonefist acts as an Impact (Warrior) Detonator, not an Eldritch (Mage) one. For example, let's say you Freeze an enemy with Winter's Grasp. A non-RM could use a regular spell, say, Energy Barrage, and set off a basic combo, which deals a little bit of damage and nothing else. If you smack it with Stonefist, however, that will Shatter the target, as a Warrior ability would, dealing much higher cold damage. Same with Lightning Bolt's Paralyze effect. Regular magic sets off a basic combo, Stonefist causes Discharge, which results in high electrical damage to the target and enemies around it.

Eh. I think RM makes more sense. Having the Mark of the Rift and being able to use actual Rift magic seems like a better fit.

But then again...Rift Mage bias.

Thanks! Where does Chain Lightning fit into this? I used to cast it as the first spell since it drops magical resistance - is that suggested?  Then I guess Stonefist? I'd love someone to tell me on a useful cast order for RM - say for a typical group of 4 enemies or so.

In a recent conversation with fellow BSN-er, Selea, I have come up with a decent Rift Mage build.

Tishen-13, both Rift and Knight-Enchanter your builds are nice. I've made my main character a KE and Solas as RM as you suggested. But I have the following problem: I've come up with two mages having almost the same setup of elemental offensive skills. And my Solas happens to die like all the time. What do I do wrong?

For RP purposes, i find a dalish knight enchanter to be quite effective.
She gets a unique elven dialogue with Solas.
she wields storm spells and energy barrages with either an ice or fire station staff.

For Rift mage, human. Mostly cause as a circle mage, i would think he would be interested in a new form of magic, especially as Your trainer says, the magic has changed alot of spells classification. Also aesthetically, i love the look of the new stonefist, PotA and the orangey rift of firestorm.

As for what you should decide, its completely up to you.
What I've done, is roll my elf with Solas (so i have KE and RM), and my human with Vivienne (RM with KE)

If you want to be a more CC and a large AOE spells, go with Rift mage. If you want to he versatile being able to heal, melee and minor CC enemies, go with Knight enchanter.

i find both specs great in any party combo.

So is it true than some people enjoy the KE even if it's over-powered? I'm inclined towards Rift as it would make the game more of a challenge, but I did like zipping around a bit when I tried the KE as Viv.  Getting up a little closer to the enemies I mean.

It was fun being an immortal goddess and taking down a dragon alone (my party all unconscious on the ground and no health potions left).  But I'm going Rift Mage next time.  I sure do miss Force Mage from DA:II. I rocked that specialization!

Well, technically the Mark of the Rift isn't 'rift magic' in the context of the spec, as you don't even have to be a mage to wield it let alone a rift Mage. On top of this, rift Mage is a spec based around opening rifts which is bizarrely the opposite of what the inquisition is trying to avoid. in some ways it's a bit like playing a good-aligned Hawke as a blood mage.

Funnier if you play a blood mage hawke who allies with the Templars .

Not that...I've actually...done that.

I dont see why KE's are that OP when you can play a warrior with perma-guard.. and what the hell, have a mage throw a barrier on him too.  Or have a mage with +guard on hit and barrier.  Either way, having both guard and barrier on any character is a bit of over kill.  And then there is Sera with a decently specced tempest.

Knight enchanter + Fade Shield + Spirit Blade = no need for guard, I believe. Also Barrier + Rejuvenating barrier passive + Combat Clarity + being in Melee range = near infinite mana.

I say this plus the inferno tree passive that reduces Cooldown by a second for each spell (does this count the Spirit blade as a spell?) makes Artificer nearly pointless if not for Hail of Arrows.

Edit: replaced Barrier with Guard.
