Not that it really matters anymore, since he died.
But, still, I'm curious.
What class was Nihlus?

Probably Infiltrator, with that slick cloak ability that was unavailable to Shepard in the first game.

Hm, good suggestion, especially since he tells Jenkins, "I move faster on my own."
But, at the same time, he was pictured with a shotgun, and later, Kaidan ask Ashley if she saw Nihlus, who "carries enough firepower to wipe out a whole platoon."

Personally, I thought Shepard always carried the same. Maybe a bit more.
Garrus is an Infiltrator too, but he also carries an assault rifle. I'm guessing that the shotgun is Nihlus' bonus specialization.

He is of the "Mook" class, with the specialization of "Red Shirt".
Mook = A dispensable character certain to die.
Red Shirt = A character who's death is meant to prove that things are dangerous.

Well this could be an endless debate as we never see him or know if he possesses biotic abilities. If he did to what degree? To that regard he could be any class.
Anyway Bosses on ME seem to fit a variety of classes and mixes. I dont think it is relevant to Nihlus at all like it is to Saren.

What does it matter? He's gone now and never coming back
Ode to Nihlus:
O' great Nihlus
How cool you seemed to be
Blacks and reds
And wierd chin fins
The first alien we'd ever see
We always speak of Jenkins
But scarcely ever you
The tragic end
At the hand of a friend
Whom when back was turned
Pew pewed.
