Fade Step - best mage ability ever?

(1) Normal mage and dragon: dragon backs away and prepares to breathe on me. I fade-step away and continue blasting.
(2) KE and dragon: dragon backs away and prepares to breathe on me. I fade-step and I'm immediate at its hindquarters again and continue whacking away. Even better than that, this sppears to distract the dragon so it fails to breathe on my party. This time.
(3) Bears are notorious for not being easily distracted from the first party member who attacks them. Mage: "Hey bear, I'm over here, attack me". Fade step away, bear follows while being pelted with arrows and stuck with sharp metal from the other party members. Bear reaches me just as the Fade step has cooled down. Repeat until the bear is distracted by your Sword-and-Shield warrrior.
(4) Enemy archer groups. Barrier up, Fade-step in, send them reeling with Mind Blast and attack in melee until your other party members (set to follow the controlled character) close up.
I've always liked playing mages, but Fade Step makes them even more fun to play than before, even though their damage output appears to have been reduced considerably.

Mobility abilities are always fun in any format IMO. Fade step is no exception.
You can even time it to dodge homing projectiles.

Why do that when you can use your Lightsab-...... I mean Spirt Sword to reflect the shots back at things.
I made an extremely mobile KE mage, The ice thing, you can change the way you are moving while in iceform.
The KE is just OP, but I'm loving it.

Fade step helps me get number 1 ranked among my groups during Multiplayers several times. It's very useful to close the distance as well as avoiding danger.

Because style points for putting Fire Mine in front of the enemy archer, Fade Stepping through him, and Stonefisting him into the glyph.
That sounds amazingly cool. I almost feel bad for my main character not being a Rift Mage.

Yes, if set to prefered, and it uses them pretty well, actually.

I love mobility and Fade Step is the first skill I ever got on my mage. Great for combat, great for traveling. ![]()

Yeah it is probably my favorite non spec ability. I like trying to time my fade step with my fade cloak detonation, so as I pass through them they get blown up.

You folks who are using all these mobility skills, how do you currently map your abilities? I play as a KE, and I've been using SB on my X button (Xbox One), and my barrier on RB. I keep Immolate and Winter's Grasp on the Y and B. But I've been thinking of changing things so all my elements are mapped to the second tier, which is modified by the left trigger. This would give me space to use more things like Fade Cloak and Fade Step as primaries, and keep all the ranged casting as secondaries.

It's cool but it would be a lot better if it wouldn't warp you back to where you cast it sometimes. Same thing happens with Charging Bull.
And whoever said the AI uses evasive abilities well is trolling. Varric randomly uses it when a swordsman targets him from across the map.

I like teleportation spells in general, but I particularly like this one because it ****s on the DA:O codex ('... No faster way of travel has been found beyond putting one foot in front of the other....'). Stuff that people, IAM THE GREAT NIGHTCRAWLER
Well, Fade Step is not teleportation.
And what's kind of funny, is that it actually isn't faster than putting one foot in front of the other (if so, it's very slight) - cooldown combined with fact that what you stop you have your staff out which really slows you down

That only happen if you mucking around with the analog stick when using fade step. If you hold a direction, fade step will always go that way.
AI will use mobility skills if set to preferred. Are you sure Varric not using Leaping Shot ?

I have Fade Step on the right shoulder myself ( I always put the integral/unique class abilities there. Fade Step, Stealth, Block. Then Focus on the Left Trigger RB. ). Generally I map single target / low cooldown abilities to the first set and AoE long / cooldown abilities to the second left trigger modifier set. I also ensure that similar abilities / elements are on the same button on both sets so the control layout is similar. So I don't need to hesitate to find something.
When using KE ( Or Rogue ) I stack the primary melee and ranged attack on the same button. With KE for example if my main ranged attack is Winter's Grasp then I map Spirit Blade to X and Winter's Grasp to X + Left Trigger. So my thumb isn't coming off my main attack button regardless of attack range.

I like it. Currently using it in my nightmare playthrough.
