The game is almost too enjoyable with friendly fire turned off

Seriously, I don't mean to rant, but friendly fire is almost too punishing in this game. In origins I turned it on because it was a challenge, here it's almost insane because of the hitbox of some of the aoe abilities. Iron bull's mighty blow has KO'd my rogue on more than one occasion, Cassandra can't do a bull charge without missing the enemy and bowling over me and the other party members(I don't know how, but once she bowled over me, dorian and sera, which is pretty amazing) and I can't use chain lightning without stunning and paralyzing friendlies. I find the game challenging enough on hard but still enjoyable enough. If friendly fire turns on works for you and presents a nice challenge, I won't try to dissuade you, but I know I'm not the only one who's seen the gameplay experience suffer in terms of enjoyment.

I enjoyed strategic positioning and clever use of aoes like flame blast, cone of cold, mana clash in Origins, I just don't enjoy it in this game because I'd like to avoid giving myself heartburn. I guess what I'm really trying to say is, if you've been reduced to throwing your keyboard or controller in frustration once or twice while playing, try turning FF off, the combat still isn't perfect by any means, but you might notice an improvement.

Yeah, I stopped bothering with it soon after first playing (2h warrior).

No achievement for a minimum hard+ FF playthrough ruined it for me, so never bothered.
To play FF should be something you could brag about.

Origin was designed with friendly fire in mind.

Inquisition was not. FF is just an option the devs put in after enough people whining about it.

I was planning on playing with FF on, but the AI is too wonky.

Strategic positioning for Mana Clash? That spell trivialized encounters with enemies having any mana, including Gaxkang. You have mana I have Mana Clash say hello say goodbye. Cone of Cold was neat. But other than that, on higher levels, best strategic positioning was get out of way, hold, and let the mage(s) destroy everything. Well, that worked for me at least.

I do not see problem with tank running into friendly AoE, if there is way to get resistance/immunity - go to space take space suit. Sten, for example, could run into  Earthquake because with talent and gear he could pass physical check. Templar, could get 100% immunity from magic iirc. In this game I do not think its possible to get such resistances and/or they collide with Guard/Barrier mechanic  so that would leave "strategic positioning" as the only way to have friendly fire on. DA:I does not seem to be primarily tactical RPG so that rules the option out.

My reason for turning on friendly fire is not the challenge so much, as realism. So if you drop a fireball on your party, well what do you think should happen?

Also it could add strategic factors like giving your party fire resistance gear so your fire mage does not do too much damage and similar.

However for that to work, friendly fire has to actually make sense.

I can only enjoy this game's combat with FF on. If I don't have to think about tactical positioning and clever playing I get bored. It's 200-300 hours of game, you have to keep the fire burning in every fight, and for me FF helps a lot with it.

Meh, FF doesn't really change anything aside from giving me a reason to not use a two hander and stops me from casting chain lightning. Nothing else really changes.

Agreed.

It is a chore.

It would be worth turning on if enemies would be affected by it, too. But they are not. And so it´s just rubbish and breaks my immersion.

Not to speak of the fact that some spells simply become unusable, such as, you named it, Chain lightning, Mana Surge, Decloaking Blast (Chain Lightning´s range with FF on is a bug though, I guess), the entire 2h Warrior spec.

I play nightmare FF on, with a two-hander as inquisitor and a Chain Lightning proc on her weapon (my mage is Dorian, Spirit/Necro spec). Besides being very successful I'm having a blast.

I turned it on when I saw it was an option and turned it off when I realized it made Chain Lightning quite silly.

I really like the friendly fire in Origins, but it just doesn't work in DAI, where casting AoE spells is really awkward to begin with, a lot of weapon types do AoE damage on attack and what have you not.

I don't think Chain Lightining crafted has FF. And good luck with that Mighty Blow hitbox. Though admittedly if you become a reaver all two hander active abilties become obsolete anyway.

I used Mighty Blow only as CC/interruptor, not as a regular part of my ability "rotation". For Spec I took Templar instead of Reaver. I just didn't like the concept of a Reaver RP-wise if you like, although I understand it's powerful from a mechanical point of view. I took Templar instead to offer wider support and buffs to the party, as a two-hander weapon warrior in Nightmare, you can't always afford to fight in melee, and as Templar you can keep offering the party a very good benefit for having you there, even when not actively fighting. But as you say, Mighty Blow isn't in my ability bar anymore.

It doesn't. And it doesn't give you any achievement either to do anything in the game with it enabled.

It's simply a feature for those that want an added challenge to the combat. Those that don't like it can just turn it off and keep quiet about how they don't have what it takes to play with it enabled.

I have to agree that the game isn't designed with consideration for FF at any level. Yet for some reason I've left it on, for my pride I guess and since I just love useless abilities. I think I'll turn it off now though.

I hate to say this, but the way FF works in this game it doesn't really add a "challenge" so much as it "pigeon holds" you into using certain abilities and builds. If you appreciate being restricted in your game play and that's fun for you, awesome.

However, I wish those that "liked" it would just keep quiet seeing as they don't have what it takes to identify that it is a legitimate problem and is not working as it should. /sarcasm

i play nightmare FF on only. Enjoying so far. Having blast actually. ITs challenging, but i still find places to use my stuff. Some AOEs are friendly for friends even on FF on. The things is the combos and dividing the battlefield. You do not need much near rampaging Iron bull who got his Barrier on and can generate guard.

Given it's magical fireball the proper answer is "anything the mage wishes to happen". If they wish their magical fire only hit certain things, why not?

Compared to DA:O the FF in this game suffers from the same issue it suffered in DA2 -- the enemies equal to your level have much more HP than your own party. Consequently, spells and abilities designed with intention to make some actual dent in these large HP bars are downright lethal to your own, much squishier characters.

Which is why I'm fine with turning it off in this game just like I did in DA2, even though it was pretty fun in DA:O.
