I've asked on a couple of forums hoping to get a few suggestions so I shall ask here too if that is OK?

First my system specs which have been unchanged for a long while.

Cooler Master HAF XB Case with 3 fans
Antec Earthwatts 500D Green power supply 3 years old.
Asrock 970 Extreme4 motherboard
Windows 7 pro 64 bit
AMD FX 4300 quad core CPU 3.8 ghz
Ram 8 gig DD3 1600
GTX 550 ti OC Edition 1 gig onboard ram
2 terrabyte WD Digital Green drive
Realtek HD Audio

I did have an issue where the mouse kept freezing at random but that was fixed, but the main issue is that just before the BIOS screen appears the PC would just hold there and not go into boot mode.

On the motherboard the debug LED says "00" for the debug code... I have looked that up but there are many suggestions for why that code is displayed...

Sometimes turning the PC off and then back on fixes this and everything works as it should but just in the last hour I had everything turned off to go watch TV and when I came back it just wouldn't start...... it was still hung at the pre BIOS stage...

So any suggestions are welcome.     I have a brand new power supply ready to install  as well but am wondering if the original one can be saved or if it's something else..

Could be the mainboard being in the process of dying.

If you already have a new PSU, try it out, maybe it's just the currently installed PSU being funky, but if nothing changes, my best guess is the mainboard is going to throw the towel soon.

Sure looks like a motherboard problem.

If it were a power supply problem then your computer simply would not boot.

Hmmm Interesting.

I do have a spare working mainboard.

Will Windows 7 let me swap boards?

AMD cpu aka Explodus

WD aka Badsectorus

The chance of dying was at least 50%, just because of these two!

Not usually. You would need a new CD key.

Man, I hate it when a computer does this. LIke it's dying but still refuses to die.

It's such a pain in the a** to swap the mobo as well. Anyway, good luck, OP.

You could always make a linux boot flash drive. It isn't difficult and could help you with your problem. Especially if you put some diagnostics on there.

You should probably reload the game and start playing again.

Give it last rights and bury it in the back garden next to Mr. Binky the goldfish.

If you booted windows it would BSOD because of driver issues. Just stick a CD or USB with a linux variant in and boot from that

HDD shouldnt matter when the PC is stuck before BIOS.

It could. If the HDD is completely shot, sometimes the system hangs in POST, showing only the graphic at start up. Happened to me.

Also, PCs don't die. Parts die.

Do you have any friends with pc's? Take it over to their place/s, see what hardware is compatible, change out parts and see what works and what doesn't.

Before you do that, take the HDD out and see if you don't get past POST, then try RAM.

OK it is more crazy then I had imagined.

New power supply and it all works.

Old power suppy it doesn't work.

But the old and new power supply do fire up my spare board with no problems..

Why is that crazy? It sounds like your PSU was the problem. Do you have a tester?

No I don't......... I peeked inside the old one and there is yellow gunk near one of the large filter capacitors and on one of the coils.....  But I'm thinking that could just be potting compound for components.

I've had two powers died on me since 2005. In one case electricity wouldn't enter the system at all, therefore the PC case seemed like a useless scrap metal! In the other case, it could start, but there was only black screen.

I get that but when my components are in working order still why change?

BTW as I said I hooked up the new power supply and everything came to life again.   Everything is like it was before all this started..

I know I could get great hardware for little cost but when everything works and does what I need why change?

Better put a stake through its heart.
