With the activity of GamerGate dying down a little, and the active accusations of harassment more or less over with, would it be possible to have a GamerGate discussion thread provided it keeps in line with all other rules on the BSN?

I honestly don't think the issue has much to do with the rules of the site.

I feel sorry for the people who were looking for transparency and objectivity in gaming journalism, but they lost. At this point, they can either accept it and move on, or change the name of the campaign and refocus.

But they lost.

Disagree with this heavily. Media narrative may have been lost, but FTC is implementing changes for media outlets with regards to paid endorsements, hidden advertisements and disclosures in the coming new year as a direct result of GamerGate. It's still going, and there are more notches in GamerGate's belt than most people would ever know.

Partly because when tackling corruption in the media, the media tends to spin their own narrative that deflect attention away from themselves.

I suspect you're right, but I might as well ask. I feel like a lot of the initial heat has died down, so while it's still a contentious issue, it can probably be kept under control. That's my take, anyways.

I had heard that a few gaming websites had apologized, and agreed to seek to offer greater transparency with regards to their reviews. I was unaware that any more had come of it.

I'm glad to hear it. It's nice to know that, after everything they went through, something was at least accomplished in the process.

I don't know if its such a good idea to talk about GamerGate per se (too much baggage) but the questionable practices in not just game journalism but the industry in general are worth discussing. There's certainly plenty to talk about, what with paid reviews, review embargoes, etc. The industry has hit a new low in terms of business practice and media coverage and it's a problem.

If the mods do allow such a discussion, I have a few things I'd like to share about this matter that aren't being talked about so much. The rabbit hole goes pretty deep and most people involved in this mess are too caught up in the political aspect and aren't as aware as they should be.

Review embargoes are the fault of Game publishers

Game journalists with any kind of integrity would tell the publishers to stuff it and not review their games at all, and inform readers of the reason why they're not reviewing it. Of course the publishers might be flashing a little cash the reviewer's way to make them a bit flexible about that. Money has that effect on some people.

The problem with Gamergate is that everyone tries to bring the light on their own problem. Gamergate doen't mean anything in the end.

Let's talk about integrity and independance in VG-journalism

Let's talk about feminism in VG

Let's not mix everything together.

Publishers are lobbying more subtly. If they don't like a journalist they can:

Stop to advertise on his website (less money for him)

Refuse to give him infos, previews, review copies: The journalist can't properly do his job, people will move to another website to get news (that means less visibility and less money for the journalist)

Forgot about this. So I take it the lack of response means that GG threads are okay? Cool.

I think that you should send a pm to a moderator and ask them what they think. In all honesty I don't see the thread staying under control for long and it will probably end up getting locked.

Insofar as GG is not really going to change absolutely anything at all in the industry, discussing the point is philosophical at best, and rather irrelevant with the gaming experience of this particular company, aka Bioware. And that's the extent to which I would ever be willing to discuss it in these forums. Some cordial behavioral lines need be drawn, in a general way, like, for example, "threatening pain, torture, rape and death is not OK, regardless who you are and whom you threaten", and that's all she wrote. The rest gets too heavily complicated to be of any functional use upon analysis.
