HBAO Full here. No pixels in effects and the image quality is well beyond that of SSAO. What are your specs and settings on Nvidia Control Panel for Ambient Occlusion?

Yup, after some further testing it seems to be an artifact of regular HBAO. I tried out HBAO Full today and while it gets rid of the grass and effects problems, it's costing me quite a few frames while roaming the larger maps or during intense battles, so I'm going to stick with HBAO for the time being (SSAO is too mellow for my tastes).  :P

I'm running the default ambient occlusion settings in Nvidia Control Panel/Inspector by the way. Would it benefit me tweaking these settings in any way?

I never use Inspector, too much stuff I can mess with.  :P  I usually try changing from Performance to Quality (or viceversa) in the Ambient Occlusion setting but it seems it's unavailable for this game. It is used mostly in some games where one of the settings causes problems, even not related to fps. Nvidia needs to get a new decent driver soon. Even if it's an AMD endorsed title there's no excuse for leaving us with poor drivers. And Bioware needs to work, test and release the next patch (or patches) now. They seem to be slacking since before xmas. It's January the 5th already!

FX-8370, 2x R9 290 Tri-X (Mantle)

Thread.MaxProcessorCount 8
GameTime.MaxVariableFps 60
WorldRender.LightTileCsPathEnable 1
WorldRender.TransparencyShadowmapsEnable 1

Added these two WorldRender. settings and my fps jump from 45-60(cap) to 69-119!

Two other Thread. commands instead did not work for me at all, and were actually a bit scary. 16x16_smiley-very-happy.png

Thread.MinFreeProcessorCount 0 <- after playing sometime this one caused elite fight to go slowmo.

Thread.ProcessorCount 8 <- this one made my speakers literally go kaboom!

Just quoting myself from the EA graveyard.

Hear, hear! I absolutely loathe the secrecy surrounding the patching schedule and content with DA:I, it's ridiculous considering the amount of people reporting bugs of all sorts!

Wow, that is a huge FPS increase indeed! Thank you very much for sharing this with us!  :D

Are you sure it was just those two WorldRender commands that were responsible for your performance gains, or was it actually the MaxProcessorCount that did the trick? I would be extremely interested to know if these two obscure commands were hogging so much performance out of the game!

I'm just using MaxProcessorCount to fix the odd jagging from my character which happens when I just run & mouse turn, and I didin't honestly even look if it even improves the frames, but I'd imagine it to at least make the game feel more fluid as thats what the reason I'm using it anyways.

Then I did test the settings one by one, but its been awhile.. so I'm just roughly going to say that:

LightTileCsPathEnable 1 - Minor 5 fps bump.

TransparencyShadowMapsEnable 1 - Major frame boost on top of that.

Anyways, It's really strange because TransparencyShadowMaps should just decrease frames or do nothing at all, and I did compare screenshots just to make sure that I'm not breaking something. So I'd guess that there is some conflict with it which causes it to loop and draw some frames.

I'm having trouble with SweetFX. This is about how far I've gotten:

Spoiler

Game directory looks like this, the SweetFX_settings txt file is the preset I'm trying to use, which is also selected through the SweetFX Configurator.

Spoiler

What could possibly be going wrong? Thanks in advance!

I'm not using SweetFX Configurator so not sure what trouble you have, but, anyway, I had problems getting SweetFX to work with DA:I until I used the SweetFX for BF4 x64 you'll find linked in this thread. Works fine with that version for me.

Thank you for the detailed post, Nurmi! I have tested the two commands, but didn't notice any performance increase or decrease on my end. Maybe these commands only help those with AMD GPUs, such as yourself?

If you are using Windows 8/Windows 8.1, then that might be the reason, but even then I would not use SweetFX Configurator. I would recommend the following:

1) Delete every single SweetFX file from your DA:I folder and remove/uninstall SweetFX Configurator from your system altogether

2) Download the SweetFX version linked in the OP: http://www.file-uplo...in-8.1.rar.html

3) Extract the SweetFX files in a separate location and only copy the following into your DA:I folder: SweetFX folder, d3d9.dll, dxgi.dll, eFX.ini, SweetFX_preset.txt and SweetFX_settings.txt

4) Go to the SweetFX settings database and download your favourite profile into your DA:I folder: http://sfx.thelazy.net/games/game/777/

5) Open the downloaded preset file and see if the effects inside (SMAA, FXAA, CA, EXPLOSION, CARTOON, LEVELS, etc.) match the ones in the SweetFX_settings.txt file that you copied over from the archive

6a) If all of the effects match, just delete the SweetFX_settings.txt file, rename the downloaded preset file as "SweetFX_settings" and you're good to go!

6b) If the effects do not match, then you will need to manually edit the copied SweetFX_settings.txt file to mirror all of the values in your favourite preset

This should let you use SweetFX with DA:I without any problems, but should you encounter any, or if you have any questions, just report back and I will be more than happy to help you out! Good luck!  :D

Yup, that version worked perfectly fine for me as well, which is why I've posted the link in the OP quite some time ago. The only problem is that SMAA injection just doesn't work with Windows 8.1 at the moment, but the SweetFX guys are working on it. A beta version of SweetFX 2.0 with the much improved ReShade injector is already available, if you want to give it a go: http://reshade.me/  ;)

so, after seeing the gifs for tessellation, i have decided to turn it off completely. I'm very happy now that i have solid 60 FPS on high settings, and the difference isn't even noticable. Would recommend it to everyone looking to gain 9-10 FPS without sacrificing quality.

Exactly my point, I've been running the game with Tesselation off for dozens of hours now without missing it at all. Definitely worth disabling it completely for a major framerate boost!  :P

So I am shocked by the results I am getting randomly.

I edited my User.cfg to look like this:

PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1
WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0
Thread.MaxProcessorCount 8
WorldRender.LightTileCsPathEnable 1
WorldRender.TransparencyShadowmapsEnable 1

And since I added the last 3 settings I decided to turn on HBAO Full. And my FPS is nearly always around 45-60 which is really good considering I was getting the same exact FPS at SSAO. I feel like those last 3 settings (at least for my computer) have helped severely with my FPS. I also have my Tessellation on High.

What GPU and CPU were you running this on, Crabby? I am asking since I didn't see these improvements on my GTX 780 and i5-3570k, which isn't hyperthreaded (i.e. it's only got 4 logical cores, not 8).

Can someone explain what these do? Thank you

WorldRender.LightTileCsPathEnable 1
WorldRender.TransparencyShadowmapsEnable 1

WorldRender.LightTileCsPathEnable handles ray tracing/translucency effects. With it forced on, light changes color if it passes through a translucent object. You don't see this very often in game, but I managed to observe it on Vivienne with Tyrdda's Staff holstered on her back. After making her drink a Restoration Potion, the green light from the potion effect passed through the gem in the staff and turned orange - the colour of the gem. Without the parameter forced on, the light stayed green all the time.

WorldRender.TransparencyShadowmapsEnable handles shadows cast by objects with transparent textures, such as foliage, if I'm nota mistaken. This is the reason I noticed a 3-5 FPS hit when I forced on in the Hinterlands and Storm Coast, due to the density of the vegetation in those two areas. It should be noted that I didn't see any noticeable difference with this command on or off, just the framerate hit!

Now, these two settings in conjuction with the processor one might lead to some obscure synergy, but since my processor has only 4 logical cores, I'm not sure it would help me setting that command to 8. It didn't do anything for me when I set it to 4, either.

I have an i7-4770k and a 770 GTX (nvidia brand..from best buy...dont judge me). I mean I am fairly surprised as well. This game is so damn finicky that who knows how it will run tomorrow for no logical reason at all.

My fps are good , only going down from 60-62 to 44-47 on Hinterlands crossing where the amount of npcs+foliage is affecting everybody. I was considering turning Tesselation down from Ultra to High and see if the fps gain/visual quality loss is perceptible. But... I'm so lazy :P lol

Where's the fun if we can't judge you? :P j/k

I agree with you. The game's kind of whimsical. 2 days ago I had my 1st freeze just by looking at Codex like I've done 1000 times before. Lost 30 mins of gathering+crafting for no reason. Now I save every 10 mins. Where are those patches Bioware? -_-

Then that is why you're seeing an improvement from using the processor command - DA:I probably wasn't making proper use of your CPU's hyperthreaded cores previously. The performance improvement is likely got nothing to do with the other two graphical commands.  ;)

So this one should make the game look even better, right?

It should make the game look better, yes, though the instances in which this effect is evident are very few and easily missed. Still, it should have virtually no performance impact on your system, so you can go ahead with it!  :P

Tesselation is a massive resource hog in this game and the performance gains of having it completely turned off far outweigh the improved image quality, at least for me. If you want a sizable framerate boost, just disable Tesselation like I did and see for yourself.  ;)

Fade touched textures are identical to Ultra textures, with the exception of a larger VRAM cache dedicated to storing texture data. From what I've experimented on my brother's GTX 970, this setting does absolutely nothing to reduce texture pop-in, nor does it improve image quality in any way. Therefore, it is best that you kept it at Ultra, to save some VRAM for enabling other effects!  ;)

This thread has been EXTREMELY helpful, thank you. Thanks to your comprehensible explanation on the frame-rate locks and console commands to use more CPU, my game has been running considerably smoother and performance has taken quite a boost, and that's from someone who plays on laptop equipped with a 670MX.

Only one quick question though: do I have to always manually input the console commands everytime I launch the game or does it get permanently saved or something?

You can put many of the commands into a file named "user.cfg" (without the quotes). The framerate lock commands can't be put into it but the rest can. The user.cfg file has to be placed into your Dragon Age Inquisition folder. If you tell me what precise commands you use we can help you creating your file too.

Hehe, no problem, my friend! I'm really glad to hear that this thread has made your game run that much better!  :D

The answer to your questions is no, you don't need to manually input the commands each time your launch the game. Like Black33 mentioned in his earlier post (thanks, Black :D), the way to make them load automatically is by doing the following:

1) Create a new Notepad file in your DA:I root folder (i.e. containing the DA:I .exe file)

2) Open the new Notepad file and paste in the console commands of your choice, just as your would input them in the in-game console. For instance, the contents of my personal file look like this:

PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1

WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0

RenderDevice.TripleBufferingEnable 0

3) Save the file as "user.cfg" when you're done and start the game. Your chosen console commands will now load automatically each time you launch DA:I!  ;)

Unfortunately, as pointed out by Black, you cannot also place the cutscene framerate fix commands in your "user.cfg" file, as these will only work when used in the "Game Properties" window in Origin (e.g. -GameTime.MaxSimFps 59.99 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 59.99+ -GameTime.MaxVariableFps 59.99). Other than these three commands, however, your can put all of the other possible console commands in your "user.cfg" as you please!  :P

Last but not least, have a blast playing the game and take your time with it! I myself just finished it yesterday, exactly two months after it launched (18th November - 18th January), after a 140+ hour playthrough in which I tried to complete everything the game had to offer and guess what - I've still missed stuff, but it was one HELL of a ride.

That being said, Video Game Ending Syndrome is really hitting me bad now. I remember it was just as bad after I had just finished DA:O over 5 years ago now. Damn, I just can't wait to see what BioWare have in store for us next!  :pinched:
