urggh i was worried my graphics card was the problem. Is it possible to get a confirmation that 61 degs on the graphics card is too high? i don't want to pony up for a new graphics card then find out something else was the problem :P

When DAI is off the graphics card temperature is 51 degs.   I don't overclock anything. everything is stock

thanks

You would be hard-pressed to find a GPU that operates at temperatures lower than 60 °C on full load because that temperature is perfectly normal and acceptable for a healthy system! So the answer is no, your temperatures are absolutely fine.  :P

In the picture that I included in my previous post you could clearly see the CPU overheating, because the core temperatures are above 90 °C:

2eobp1g.jpg

This is not a healthy operating temperature for any component and in this particular case it was an issue with the CPU cooling being improperly installed!

However, since I'm sure you don't see any temperatures above or even around 90 °C for any of those sensors when running DA:I on your system, it means your poor performance is a result of something else. This brings me to another question: was there something new that you installed around the time DA:I started performing like this?

I changed my Mouse from a Razer Naga to a new Razer Naga Chroma. but that's about it. I have since tried putting back my old mouse which seemed to help abit but i still get fps drops that i previously did not experience.  And it kinda makes no sense that a mouse would create this problem lo

I updated my drivers to the new 344.75 drivers for nvidia but that kept crashing my game due to a directx error so i went back to my 344.11 drivers which were the ones i was using to play DAI for the past 130+ hrs.

hence why i am at my wits end.   I am not sure if i should fork out $500+ for a new graphics card if changing the graphics card does not help so any assistance would be greatly appreciated

regards

The error i was getting with the 344.75 drivers was as follows  DirectX function "getdeviceremovedreason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("the application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is a design-time issue that should be investigated and fixed.") GPU: Nvidia GEforce GTX 670" Driver 34475

I don't get that error with the 344.11 drivers

After tweaking the settings yesterday, I found out that lowering AO to HBAO and effects to High seemed to actually increase stuttering in the cutscenes . Keeping them at HBAO Full and Ultra seemed to make the cutscenes smoother. There's still some minor stuttering but bot enough to bother me. Gonna have to do some further testing on this though.

No, changing the mouse should definitely not have any bearing on what's happening here. By the way, how do you find the Razer Naga Chroma compared to the regular Razer Naga? I have a Razer Naga Epic that I was considering upgrading to a Chroma, but I heard people complaining about the mechanical side buttons being to sensitive and thus leading to accidental key presses when just moving the mouse around?

Try the following to fix the DirectX crash with the 344.75 drivers:

1) Go to C:\Users\Your-Username\Documents\BioWare\Dragon Age Inquisition\Save and delete "ProfileOptions_profile". (Don't worry, you will not loose any of your saves, this will just set your game's graphical settings to low and reset any of your other game settings to default such as keyboard control and subtitles, but you can switch these options back on later).

2) Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Dragon Age Inquisition\__Installer\directx\redist or to the location you installed the game in, then open DXSETUP and install the DirectX runtime there (if you press install and it says that your computer had it already installed or anything similar to that, then you should be fine and can move on to the next step).

3) Download and install Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4, then reboot your computer (if you have it already installed, uninstall it then reinstall it again; note to uninstall any Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 versions and then only install  the one that fits your computer's OS - x64 or x84). Link for downloading: http://www.microsoft...s.aspx?id=30679.

4) Disable Origin in Game, you can find this under Origin > Application Settings > Origin In Game (this may not be necessary, but it will help to reduce stuttering in any case).

5) Launch your game, then go to Settings > Display and switch to "Windowed Fullscreen". Also go to "Graphics" to double check that Ambient Occlusion is turned off. Then quit the game and restart it (because your settings will applied the next time your start the game).

Please let me know if this helps you fix your crashing at all or not! Good luck!  ;)

Yes, it's just mind-boggling the way this game works, but I've found the same yesterday when I bumped Effects Quality back to "Ultra". I need to test this further, obviously, but it seems the performance impact is minimal, so I might end up keeping it on Ultra.

Please report back with your findings, maybe we can gain a better understanding of this phenomenon before BioWare decide to launch their long-awaited patch!

I tried the steps you suggested. While i did not get a crash with the DX error message i got a crash with a white screen and the game hangs. sigh i don't know if buying a gtx 970 will fix the game for me.  I am going to test going back to the 344.11 drivers and see if the game runs smooth because i did notice the fps was much better after applying the steps for the fix

As for the Chroma i kinda like it because it is wireless and my old naga, (it's very old, bought it when razer first released the naga series so i could use it for WoW.) was getting abit wonky.  The pretty changing colors are nice lol.  The layout feels quite comfortable so far, so no complaints.

Also Hsien, and OP, I'm not sure if the 344.80 Nvidia drivers will help anyone with anything, but Hsien if your looking for something else to try there's that. Not saying it'll help, but I just don't know what will work with this game.

And for anyone reading, as frustrating as this trail and error is, so far DA:I is a really good game and that's why it's really bothering me. I want to play it lol.

Is anyone here running the game on a GTX 970? I am tempted to go buy one tommorow and would like to know how good does DAI run on it?

regards

If i do get the new graphics card i will retry the 344.75 drivers.

so far i have not gotten any crashes since getting back to the 344.11 drivers in about 20+ mins of play so that is a good sign i hope lol

I've also read that Windows 8 helps performance but I've seen no numbers to attest for this.

I don't think buying a GTX 970 will solve anything besides providing a solid boost in framerate (a theoretical 40% increase) over your current GTX 670. Your problems are much rather software-related and require a software fix, though it still eludes me at present. Please try googling your error code and read other user's experiences, maybe you can find something I missed?

Regarding the Naga Chroma - so you don't find the new mechanical buttons too easy to accidentally press? I use a fingertip grip with my Naga, so that's why I'm asking!  :P

Did Nvidia launch new drivers then, since 344.80 sounds like a newer version than the 344.75 drivers I'm currently using?

I think it's been a mixed bag with the gtx 970, but if you type in performance dragon age inquisition, I think the GtX 970 has been everyone I've read, I just don't remember the stats off the top of my head.

Another update

At first after the tweaks my fps was pretty good, back to what it was previously. however after about 40mins while i was in skyhold the fps drop hit again

sigh  i really hope a new graphics card will fix it  and i am very worried because a 40% improvement in fps on 10fps is only 14 fps and that is still unplayable :(

The new Chroma button style takes abit of getting used to, but i will get lots of practice with it on Diablo 3 :P

I tried googling the error code, it seems prevalent with people having problems with battlefield 4

http://answers.ea.co.../1743951/page/6

The last post claims he fixed the problem by fixing voltage to his RAM? although i have no idea how to do it in the BIOS

344.80 isn't exactly new drivers, more like 344.75-2 (which is how it's labelled in the folder). It fixes some problems people had with 344.75, the effects are not limited to the gtx 980 sli in the patch notes, but that doesn't mean that it does nothin either.

Ok. my PC is far from top best, it's a laptop actually, a decent one, but still.

it's Lenovo Y500

2x650M 2gb SLI,

6 gb ram,

i5 3210 (2.5Mhz)

win 8

I've been testing all kind of settings to optimize the FPS, and here's what I have to say about the 'windowed borderless fullscreen' vs 'fulscreen' (6). The former cuts FPS significantly, almost in half, It's ~25-30 in 'borderless' vs ~45-60 in 'fullscreen'. I used the built-in FPS-counter. Normally it's not like that, I've used 'borderless fullscreen' many times to solve tearing\FPS\performance issues, but here it seems to add to the problems instead.

.

I'll need to test it more tonight, because I have only been running around the Skyhold.

My current cfg turns off the motion blur (good riddance). Settings are custom, with high textures and mix of high-medium for the rest of things. So far it's the smoothest gameplay I've seen.  Hopefully they are going to optimize it even more, because I had 40-50 FPS in BF4 on 'high' preset.

I have a GTX 970 and it ran very well until sunday when I noticed a drop in fps, from a constant 60fps to around 40-50fps, sometimes it drops at 35-40fps.

I also experienced a microstutter in one area only and it was in Haven, between the main door of the village and the stairs where Varric stands, it's the only area where I had this problem

Yes, but that's because people have been reporting that they fixed this error by downclocking every back to stock voltages - GPU, CPU and even RAM. However, I haven't had any crashes on my system with all three of those components overclocked (CPU to 4.4 GHz, RAM to 2133 Mhz and the GPU is factory-overclocked), so I wouldn't recommend touching any BIOS setting, since you mentioned before that you run everything at stock anyway!

Bottom line is: as annoying as these crashes are, tweaking your BIOS and potentially messing up those settings is not worth the risk simply for fixing DA:I's current bugs. Let BioWare do something for a change - even though that will take longer it's a much safer bet!  ;)

Can you provide a download link, so that I might update the OP and install them myself, please?  :D

I'm really glad to hear that you found this guide useful and are enjoying the game more as a consequence of tweaking your graphics!  :P

Yes, "Borderless Windowed" mode behaves differently in this game, that's why I urged people to try playing with it on. I also get poorer performance using it, so I guess it's just not worth it for us two, at least.  ;)

Thanks so much for this!

It's my pleasure, thank you very much for your kind words!  :D

I have experienced that 1-second freeze myself in the exact same area of Haven, so it's definitely engine-related! Here's hoping a patch can fix this and much more.  ;)

Nooo, don't go for the MSI GTX 970 because it's been known to have a lot of other issues, including overheating due to the fans not spinning and really annoying coil-whine! Just google these issues and then consider buying the Gigabyte GTX 970 Gaming G1 instead - it's got both better cooling and a larger factory overclock!  ;)

Nice setup you got there! :P

On that beast I wouldn't settle for anything less than max everything apart from MSAA off for 1080p, but for 2880p I suggest trying to play the game on the "High" preset first and then tweak each setting up and down individually. I would also recommend capping your framerate to 30 FPS for starters, by pasting the following into your "Game Properties" window in Origin:

-GameTime.MaxSimFps 30 -GameTime.ForceSimRate 30+ -GameTime.MaxVariableFps 30

Good luck and please post back with your results!  ;)

If you're using Nvidia cards and still getting cutscene stutter and/or driver crashes, try dropping both of the Post-processing settings to medium or lower. That fixed my GTX 760's problems at any rate, can run with everything else on Ultra without issue.
