so not upgrading based on not liking the UI is not quite a valid argument for savvy PC users!
It's more like 'not upgrading based on being fine with both current UI and performance'.
I thought you might've heard something on the win 8 vs win 8.1 performance, since you seem to follow all sorts of the resources on this matter.

Sorry if my reply sounded harsh, I did not intend it that way since upgrading an OS can be a very daunting task that should never be taken lightly. I'm also sorry to say that I haven't seen any report of DA:I's performance on Windows 8 vs. Windows 8.1, but I don't think it would be significant compared to that of Windows 7 vs. Windows 8/8.1. ![]()

Hey Verrenus. Just one more thing and then I will be up and gaming for a while. I have a question and I would like to hear your take on it. As you know my monitor is capable of 2880p resolution @60Hz, but I had something on my mind. It seems some people theoretically think that the human eye can not see the difference between a 4K monitor and 1080P from a relatively close distance commonly seen in PC setups these days. I am just wondering what would really give me the best experience while playing this game: Either High preset where I get an average of 37-42 FPS on the 2880p or maxed out settings with 1440p @60Hz. What do you think would be best for playing games on?

If it were up to me, I would always choose a higher framerate vs. pixel density. On your system, I would think maxed out on 1440p@60Hz would result in a smoother gameplay experience paired with the maximum amount of eye-candy the game can hope to deliver. Sure, increasing the pixel density can make games look better, but if I were you I would focus on turning up the graphical settings, not the resolution. ![]()

Thanks, much appreciated. I was pretty much thinking along the same lines actually, but people love their high resolution and I have not been able to do max resolution for very long so just wanted your word on it. So it seems all is well with my setup and I might as well use it.

Hmm, I noticed in another thread you told you are using a QNIX QX320QHD monitor. One thing to note when considering the resolution to use is that the actual panel resolution is 2560x1440. The 2880p resolution is achieved by what they're calling "virtual 4k", which is essentially downsampling built in to the monitor. In that case, I would definitely stick with 1440p. Downsampling is very nice if you can run it at a decent framerate, but at 37-42 fps it's not worth it, at least in my opinion.

Can I implement the cutscene framerate fix without capping my gameplay framerate? Not sure if i framed it right.

While I was checking to see if Anisotropic Filtering was set to its maximum value in my own "ProfileOptions_profile" file, I noticed this other setting that was a part of Battlefield 4, but not DA:I:
GstRender.MouseRawInput 0
Thinking I might be able to solve the camera panning stutter, I set the parameter to "1" and upon starting the game I noticed the mouse performing like one would expect it to in a PC game. Unfortunately, to my surprise upon loading my save, I also discovered that setting the game to recognize raw mouse input apparently disables camera panning using the right-mouse button!
While the game felt noticeably smoother with the setting turned on, I sadly had to revert it back to its original value of "0" in order to still be able to properly play using mouse and keyboard. A shame really, but it seems BioWare modified the hell out of the Frostbite 3 engine to make a third-person role-playing game out of it and not a first-person shooter - hence, the myriad bugs we're seeing.
Oh well, back to the drawing board in hopes of a patch sometime soon... ![]()

For point 6, I did as you suggested on a 60hz monitor and got very noticeable screen-tearing. I'm not sure if it's bug my end, or as a result of the fix, but it may be worth mentioning in the OP.
I've personally found the two MaxSim and ForceSim settings to be adequate.

Also, if you want to add a "personal story" into your OP, I'll give you mine regarding perhaps an additional point about re-installing the OS.
EVGA GTX 980 SC 4GB
I5-4670k @ 4.0GHz
Installed on Sandisk SSD
8GB Corsair Vengeance RAM
I was getting around 30-40fps at the main spawn-point in Skyhold prior to re-installing Windows 7 from scratch. After installation of Windows 7 and necessary drivers (nVidia etc), performance has increased significantly. I now get 60fps with the occasional drop to around 50fps, and this is with everything maxed out, Fade-Touched textures, post process AA on, and MSAA off. Other areas include The Hinterlands and The Fallow Mire remaining a solid 60fps.
This game is a performance hog and I would also thoroughly recommend shutting down as many programs and services as possible before playing. I maintain my PC fairly well, and even leaving Chrome seems to effect the performance a fair bit.

Thank you very much for your input, as always! Did you by any chance use integers (e.g. 60) or floating numbers (e.g. 59.99) with the tweak when you got this tearing that you mentioned?

This is valuable information, of course, but since we are PC gamers after all, I think everyone following this thread knows the importance of maintaining their rigs at peak performance. While reinstalling an OS can declutter a system and give it a fresh start, it can be really daunting task for a lot of people. However, I'm pretty sure everyone here can check their registries for errors and set up a lean startup queue, not mention shut down all unnecessary applications before starting up a very demanding title. ![]()
Also, I would like to apologise for not managing this thread as well as before, but my PSU - a Corsair AX850 I bought brand new 2 years ago - has just given its last breath, rendering my rig effectively dead until the replacement can arrive on Monday - a Seasonic Platinum P760 XP2. I was so looking forward to the weekend to play some more Dragon Age, but what can one do? These things happen and only when they do, does one actually realise what their rig really means to them. ![]()

Very helpful thread, thanks a lot! Unfortunately, I've tried everything that you mentioned and then some about fixing the stuttering cutscenes, but it seems my game just doesn't want to cooperate with me. I tried everything you mentioned in steps 3, 6, 7, 9, and 11 and yet cutscenes STILL have MASSIVE stuttering.
My rig for reference:
Asus GTX 770
i7 4770k @ 4.0 GHz
8 GB ram
Windows 7
1920x1080 @ 144 Hz
AO: HBAO
Windowed Borderless
Effects: High
Mesh: Ultra
Post Process: High
Shadow: High
Terrain: High
Tesselation: Ultra
Textures: Ultra
Vegetation: Ultra
Water: Ultra
Post-process AA: High
Multisample AA: Off
I cannot for the life of me figure out why it's still stuttering. In game everything runs pretty well.

I think the way they did vegetation it's a vram eater but on a 2 gig 670 its hard to test what exactly it is, only that vegetation on medium makes a big difference.

Thank you very much for your kind words! DA:I's performance can be all over the place for no apparent reason, so I would like you to first try to set your display to "Fullscreen" instead of "Windowed Fullscreen" and if that doesn't work, to set all of the graphical settings that you currently have on "Ultra" to "High" and then report back. This will hopefully alleviate your cutscene stutter, as well as significantly boost your overall framerate with minimal to no image quality loss! ![]()
@Verrunus good luck with the new psu!
Thanks a lot, hopefully I'll have much better luck with the new one! I'm really hoping no other component was damaged... Monday couldn't come soon enough (I never thought I would say that, geez)! ![]()

However, I have that exact seasonic and it has been nothing but a dream. This was my first computer I built, but I wouldn't go anywhere else.
LTRADCZEK, my only recommendation that worked for me was messing with the pre-rendered frames, there are still random fps drops whenever I use any form of v-sync or capping.

Thank you very much for the kind thoughts! I'm really anxious until I can boot up my rig again, but after a lot of research into PSUs (jonnyguru.com is a godsend!), I'm glad I apparently made the right choice! ![]()
Did you set the maximum pre-rendered frames number to "1" in Nvidia Inspector/Control Panel, by any chance? If it did alleviate stuttering for you when set like that, I would be curious to see if someone could try pasting the following line in their "user.cfg" file and see if it has the same impact:
RenderDevice.RenderAheadLimit 1
Theoretically, it should do the exact same thing as setting the value in Nvidia Inspector, but with how Frostbite behaves in DA:I, nothing is certain! ![]()

I realize that many of you are looking for clarity on the 1st patch. The goal was Dec. 9. We will be missing that on most platforms.
Mark Darrah @BioMarkDarrah 3m3 minutes ago
There are complexities to patching #DAI. Unfortunately this compressed the 1st patch to the point of slipping. There will be more patches.
Took this from the DAI Twitter thread.
It kinda hints that we (PC) will be getting a patch on the 9th.

Wow, that would be fantastic if true, thank you so much for sharing this! I've been plagued by the gender bug from the beginning, but didn't want to reroll because I couldn't remember all of the settings I used in the character creator. Hopefully the first patch will address this and more! ![]()

Yeah, me neither, I'm so excited! I don't think it will come out for any of the consoles first due to their manufacturers wanting to validate everything before it goes live on their networks, but Origin is owned by EA so BioWare could release the patch on it virtually as soon as they deem it ready! ![]()
