I have tried the render.aheadlimit, but not extensively. Do you think it would work better than nvidia control panel/inspector? Or the same? Plus yes it is set to 1

Given that capping your framerate using anything but the in-game console practically doubles loading times, I thought it would be similarly better to set the maximum pre-rendered frames using the in-game console as well. I can't try this for myself, since my rig is still hobbled until the new PSU arrives, but I think it's worth a shot to try to do everything using the in-game console, if at all possible.  ;)

Updated the OP with a new potential fix for cutscene stutter, even with the default 30 FPS cap - setting your in-game mouse smoothing slider to 75%!

Also created a dedicated section for fixing cutscene stutter!  ;)

Thank you very much for your kind words! DA:I's performance can be all over the place for no apparent reason, so I would like you to first try to set your display to "Fullscreen" instead of "Windowed Fullscreen" and if that doesn't work, to set all of the graphical settings that you currently have on "Ultra" to "High" and then report back. This will hopefully alleviate your cutscene stutter, as well as significantly boost your overall framerate with minimal to no image quality loss!  ;)

Thanks a lot, hopefully I'll have much better luck with the new one! I'm really hoping no other component was damaged... Monday couldn't come soon enough (I never thought I would say that, geez)!  :(

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, turning down the settings to High did not solve the stuttering. It did stutter a bit less though, but still enough for it to be very distracting. It also stutters all the same and I get roughly the same performance in-game using either Fullscreen or Windowed Fullscreen. And I hope the patch does come out on the 9th, that would be amazing! At this point, I will just wait until the patch releases to see if it solves the cutscene stuttering. If not, then I can actually panic! And good luck with your new PSU, I hope everything turns out okay.

EDIT: I just saw your new suggestions for fixing the stuttering. I will try that as well!

Thanks for your input! Did you try the mouse smoothing trick I posted earlier today, maybe it helps with the cutscene stutter? It would be great if we got a patch tomorrow, but I'm still very skeptical of BioWare not being transparent about what the patches aim to fix.  <_<

The new PSU should arrive sometime today, so I can't wait to get back home and try it out! Hopefully that will be the end of the technical problems and I can finally get back to gaming.  :D

So for the mouse smoothing, it should be set to the second to last tick in the slider, right? I just tried that, and no dice, unfortunately. Yea, I'm just gonna wait for that patch, whenever the hell it comes out!

I'm not sure how many ticks the mouse smoothing slider has, but if setting it to the second to last tick didn't work, then maybe it's just another snake oil fix. Damn, this game is tough as nails to fix! Our only hope is BioWare's patching, but I won't be holding my breath.  :(

I didn't check this thread lately, but I don't really understand how the graphic settings on this game works

I'm playing in medium with some options in high or ultra and the result is the same, the stutted wont disapear  the only improvement is the fps which is around 55-60 for me :P

Most likely a dumb question, but I'm gonna assume this fix will only work if using a mouse a keyboard and not if using a controller?

Truth be told, I don't think anyone knows how the graphical settings impact the game's performance exactly, since not even the lowest settings alleviate the annoying stuttering! Hopefully BioWare's first patch will be released for PC tomorrow!  ^_^

Not at all a dumb question, since I actually wouldn't be surprised if it DID actually work with a controller, given the way BioWare coded this game. Give it a try and report back if it helped or not!

Now that is interesting...could be a placebo affect, or the fact I havent played the game in a few days. But setting the mouse smoothing to 1 tick below max (while using a controller) might have helped? I feel like the cutscenes might be smoother but I honestly can't remember how bad the stutter was a few days ago..hmm.

Given I use a controller I see no reason to not set the mouse smoothing to 75% so might as well keep it there and play the game some more!

If it seems to work, then don't try to find the logic behind it since there isn't any to be had with DA:I's performance - just play the game and be merry! I'm just glad it helped!  :D

That's what I thought as well, but it might just mean that they are patching the PC together with the rest of the consoles, not that they will release the PC patch tomorrow. I just hate the fact that they're posting such information on Twitter and not on the freaking forums, where everyone can see it!

Honestly, I'd take the game stuttering over the crashing it's doing now. If I play in full screen it gives the dreaded DirectX fatal crash after an hour to an hour and a half. If I play in boarderless window, it plays for the same length of time but instead of the DirectX crash it simply freezes and I have to close it from task manager.

Tried everything in this thread and that people have been suggesting on the EA Help forums. Nothing works. I've even tried reinstalling Windows then only installing the essentials (Windows updates, Nvidia drivers, Origin and DA:I) but the same thing occurrs. Really hoping the patch helps with this.

Ok guys, after 3 nerve-wracking hours I managed to replace my faulty Corsair AX850 with the new Seasonic Platinum P760 and, since I'm typing this from my rig, everything seems to be in order again! Thank God for that, now I can get back to gaming after a wasted weekend, phew!

Thank you for posting! It saddens me greatly to hear that nothing could help your crashing, not even from the EA Help forums.  :(

Hopefully Mark Darrah was right and BioWare will release the PC patch tomorrow. Even though they didn't provide any patch notes, it's got to include crash fixes, since those should be top priority. Fingers crossed!  ;)

I have a question for you sir. Yesterday and today I have not played the game and deleted all my characters because of my guys face (didnt look right in cutscenes) so I decided I wanted to restart. But then I heard about the PC patch, what do you think of the chances are that some of the fixes will only apply to newly created games? Thats why I've been holding off making a new game, waiting for the patch I guess.

With a game the size of DA:I, I would say that both versions are equally possible. However, BioWare would surely ****** off everyone who has already spent 50+ hours with no end in sight, so I don't think they would implement fixes that require a re-roll. Thing is, we don't even have 100% confirmation that tomorrow we are going to see a patch, so my suggestion for you is to at least spend some time tonight in the character creator to make sure you have the perfect character (make sure to take photos/screenshots of every slider, just in case!) for when you actually decide to start playing, either today or tomorrow! Good luck and, most importantly, have fun!  ;)

Updated the OP with a link to download the newest Catalyst Omega 14.12 driver for AMD GPUs, boasting the following improvements:

Dragon Age: Inquisition performance optimizations

- Up to 5% performance increase over Catalyst™ 14.11.1 beta in single GPU scenarios with Anti-Aliasing enabled
- Optimized AMD CrossFire™ profile

Kudos go out to texhnolyze for pointing this information out!  :D

I've found that the game is MUCH smoother if I play with a gamepad instead of KB/Mouse. I don't know why, my frames vary wildy between 40 and 60, but when using a controller everything feels smooth, while with KB/Mouse even 60fps feel laggy and it stutters visibly. This is even when mouse smoothing is supposedly "off", which did help somewhat but not completely.

Apparently, it's a Win7 issue if I understood the first post correctly? Ack. Hopefully this gets addressed in the patch today, I'm not going to update to Win8...

The new AMD drivers do nothing for me, Mantle is still unplayable laggy and prone to crashing but the patch today is supposed to address this, too, so I'll wait patiently.

Thanks for the helpful thread btw!

And thank you for posting and for the kind thoughts!  ;)

While I use a controller to play games in the vein of Dark Souls, Devil May Cry and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, I cannot see myself using one for a party-based RPG. The PC controls also don't bother them too much, with the exception of not having mouse-only movement and click to move-and-loot. Hopefully today's patch and the ones that will follow can fix these issues and more.

That being said, I cannot wait to get back home and see if today's patch fixes the God-awful gender bug that's been ruining my immersion every time I get referenced in the game!

Excuse me sir but I have not encountered that bug...but I am sure it is really funny. Miss what race did you play when it happened. I'm sure you forgot his name, anyway what class was she?.... Eh eh eh eh :P

You are very lucky indeed then, it's incredibly annoying and it breaks most of the romances! It was funny for the first 5 minutes, sure, but after nearly 50 hours of playtime with no end in sight, it's not nearly as funny anymore.  :pinched:

I found that simply moving the mouse in already intensive scenes dropped the framerate even further. At times, upwards of 10 fps. This caused the camera panning to feel incredibly jerky. The fact that the drops happen without even doing anything and just moving the mouse just baffled me. I know it takes some CPU time to handle mouse inputs, but the severity of the drops was a tad ridiculous. That was the last straw that made me switch to using a controller.

The mouse issues I don't think are related to Windows 7. I'm running on Windows 8.1 and still getting this behavior. The game does however perform a lot better in general on Win8.1.

I think the performance tanks due to how BioWare coded the camera panning with the mouse. Like I said in an earlier post, if you enable raw mouse input through the "ProfileOptions_profile" file, you lose the ability to pan the camera using the right mouse button, but you also get rid of the frame drops associated with it and you can move the mouse around the screen like crazy with no more issues. Hopefully this can be patched later on, but I'm going to move to Windows 8.1 myself in the coming weeks, since that should by all accounts make the game run a lot better!  ^_^
