Hi,

Haven't tried NM yet as I'm still on my first playthrough on hard (which is a bit simple).

How do you rate the challenge level of DAI NM compared to DAO and DA2? Does it offer a more interesting challenge than what the first 2 games did?

I found it easier than DA 2 but harder than DA 1.  Unfortunately most of the difficulty comes from the poor controls and lack of tactics AI.  I can't tell you how many times I have paused given orders to my party members only to have the not cast the ability or move to the position I asked.

I play with FF also, but it is poorly implemented and more than a bit nonsensical (firewall causes no FF but chain lighting does?)

Difficult in early game, easy in late game. Can be played without using tactical cam perfectly fine.

Key to success is a combination of proper equipment, proper abilities and proper playing. You can read a guide and make everything trivial, or you can try to work out what works and what doesn't on your own. The latter approach is probably what made DAO's difficulty an "interesting challenge".

So far I've found it more challenging than both but in my Nightmare play though I'm only level 11.  Also the game is still somewhat new so it will become easier as we learn all the in's and out's.  I remember thinking DA2 was fairly difficult at first but my most recent play through being a breeze on nightmare.

I would offer the following advice:

Keep your equipment up to date.  This is especially important on your tank.  Every few levels (give or take) gather some mats and craft the best gear you can.  Save every penny and purchase the T2 schematics you need from Val Royeux early.

Outlevel the important missions.  This is especially true early.  If it suggests 6-8 be level 9.  Once you start them there is no going back to haven/skyhold... Nothing is worse than clawing your way to the end of a big mission only to find out you are not prepared for it's boss.  Your options are spending an hour kiting/cheesing the encounter or loosing a couple hours loading an older save.  If you have absolutey min maxed to the extreme you will be safe using the suggested levels but why risk your valuable time?

Keep your party stocked with craftable potions/grenades/tonics and keep them up to date and upgraded.  It's very easy to run out of potions on important missions and still have a ways to go before your next supply cache.  Having extra healing can be super helpful here.  Also jar of bees are awesome.  Use them.

Disable is very important in Nightmare.  Put mobs to sleep, send them fleeing in panic, and be sure to have a few clutch CC's ready when you need them (winter's grasp, bull rush, etc).

Go ahead and prepare yourself to spend 4 seconds in every 5 paused issuing orders.  And expect 1 out of every 3 orders to be ignored.  The controls and party AI in this game is ****, as you probably already know.  Once you embrace the turd that is DAI Tactics you can focus on the good parts.

Thanks for all the input!

Have to agree that poor AI and lack of proper tactical management seem to make it more frustrating than it should be.

But NM with FF on for me next playthrough!

2>Origins>Inquisition, with a significant spike on early bosses in Inquisition.

To be honest, I never struggled at all in Origins and 2. My main character alone could solo anything in the game on the highest difficulty level. The most remarkable encounter I remember of Origins was the endboss of Golems of Amgarrak, he would kill my party members somewhere midway through the fight, yet my character just soloed the rest without a problem (playing 2h weapon warrior).

Inquisition is quite difficult early, but it becomes quite easier once you get access to more and better potions/grenades and key abilities from specialization trees. Before level 12 some Rifts are very tough to deal with and the Ferelden Frostback (Hinterlands Dragon) will kick your ass if you meet her at the level intended for her (level 12). She's still doable and once she goes down you'll have the dragonfighting basics down and every other dragon fight feels like a pushover, you just have to adapt slightly to the perks of each different dragon.

I've posted this same thing in a few other threads - for me you're not really enjoying the game's combat until you've played it in Nightmare difficulty with Friendly Fire enabled. Some people prefer to just click red stuff and kill it with autoattacks to get to the story bits, which is what matters to them, and that's fine. But I find that you only fully experience the game under the settings I mentioned before.

Early game is agonizing. Crafting is imperative. I remember having to disengage or avoid most enemy encounters before getting to Val Royaux and being able to craft better equipment, but even then the game was still leagues more difficult than it had been on Hard. Getting better perks and hiring more agents help heaps.
I also found out that on Nightmare you come across more Elite enemies, and they constantly cast Barrier and Guard. Also, maybe it is just my impression, but the random loot looks somewhat better than it does on Hard.
After getting to Skyhold things start to get much easier. Specialization and high level schematics change everything. I was able to beat the Hinterlands Dragon at level 12 and the four level 16 Giants on Emerald Graves at level 13. At this point I guess Nightmare is not much different than Hard difficult anymore.

The difficulties are loot driven and UI driven (at least on PC). The former is fixable with time but the latter isn't. The difficulties don't spike as much as you'd expect when you get good loot. And the lower ones are hard without at least some functional AI tactics and crafting. Not sure what design Bioware was going for but it doesn't work IMO.

If you want to keep the game challenging on Nightmare, you can perfectly do the dragons at or below level using drops and few crafting mats. At lower levels you don't have access to Dragon Rune and I did just fine on these two guys. Before anyone comments on Knight Enchanter, I'm going to say that it would've been so much harder if Blackwall's Tank AI wasn't such a beast.

Level 12 Dragon on Nightmare w/ At Level and Below Party, no Exploits, Dragon Runes, etc.

Spoiler

Level 13 Dragon on Nightmare w/ At Level Party, no Exploits, Dragon Runes, etc.

Spoiler

I'm planning on doing all the dragons on NiM at or below level and going to spec out of the KE tree just to show that it is doable w/out over leveling and/or stacking your party against the mob. I am torn though. I want to try a fight w/out pausing. I did on a few attempts and wiped, but it was fun as heck.

Good fights, but you were using a KE with guard generating gear, I put that pretty high on the cheese factor, your main could have easily soloed that dragon.  I don't consider that any different from attacking dragons at range where they can't attack back, you are effectively invincible....

I defeated the Fereldan Frostback on Nightmare using my Rift Mage completely built into the Blizzard skill tree, Viviene with the Lightning tree, Cassandra as the tank and Sera as the DPS Flask of Lightning beast. All party at level 12.
I loved this setup, Blizzard + Lightning Cage is awesome and Sera can do insane damage AI controlled, your only trouble is to keep everyone alive.
Knight Enchanter is not necessary. It makes it easier and one-dimensional, but it is not necessary.
