Denerim.

Sigh... that would have been a great place to go visit in DAI so players can see how Denerim is like after the 10 year jump from DAO to DAI.

Also, about the areas feeling empty with no purpose... I just got to the Exalted Plains in my game. People were talking about a war zone basically with two sides fighting. Great, I bet that will have some interesting quests and stories... Wow, it is just a series of fetch quests!

Where are the quests for the two factions fighting and siding with one of them?... Nothing political at all even though it potentially has connections to the Orlais plot, no interesting NPCs, a dalish clan that sends you out to collect a load of random stuff and tons of respawning enemies.

This area should have had basically it's own self-contained story, but it is an absolute chore, with nothing worthwhile in it.

What a waste!

IMO Exalted Plains was the worse zone in the game followed up by the desert zones. Best zones were in Fereldan.

I really liked Emerald Graves and the Villa.

Agreed!  Great story, excellent companion interaction (at least with the companions I had), and a conclusion that felt satisfying, as expected from the Dragon Age writers. Could have done without the enemy respawn rate, but it was still good, and probably some people liked that part. Too bad none of the other sidequests in the game, even ones closer tied to the main story and not randomly stumbled upon mysteries, really compare.

The romance I did was bad so perhaps it's not just you and Josephine. I like Blackwall, but given his circumstances, it was very badly (creepily?) handled. Also, I really think the companions ought to be able to initiate flirting with you (with an approval system that doesn't have everyone falling at your feet in the first few hours). So what if you're not interested in everyone who does? That happens in real life too. As things are I can't shake the feeling that these pseudo relationships wouldn't exist if you weren't enticing your companions into it, so it feels contrived. And borderline creepy. I honestly felt bad for Cullen when I flirted with him. He seemed genuinely disturbed at first.

Other things on my list...Well, when I first started, I was so confused about what was going on because here I was, plopped out onto a giant world map, and it felt like I had fifty objective tabs active on my (really confusing) compass with no explanation for what all those tabs actually were). Eventually I got the hang of things, but it was discouraging enough at first that I wanted to punt my game into the ceiling fan. The tutorials for crafting (or lack thereof) are horrendously bad. It was a while before I figured out the runes and enchanting weapons or armor, because it was not well explained at all. And I still don't care for the crafting system.

Given the number of (mind numbing) side quests I've done, I feel somewhat cheated in that I haven't unlocked hardly anything (especially where mounts are concerned). I've done a lot of damn side quests. And there's literally no pay off. It's boring. It's really, really boring. I got so tired of it I just decided to beat the game.

And I wasn't even excited about that. That's probably the worst part. The lack of anticipation for the final confrontation is a problem. It's supposed to be the most climactic point in the story, and it wasn't. I was so bored with the whole thing.

I'm all for longer RPGs, but this game feels more like 40 hours of story (the usual), with an additional 40 hours of pointless tasks that have nothing to do with the story. That's a problem for me. When I say I want a longer RPG, I don't mean 40 extra hours of gathering miscellaneous items for miscellaneous people.

Dragon Age Inquisition is like the never ending quest generator in a huge world that I'm not even remotely emotionally attached too.

On the topic of things I wish were missing...the number of times I had to answer about my feelings regarding 'the Maker' and Andraste bordered on the absurd. If I were a religious person, maybe this would be more to my liking, but I am not, and this is most definitely not to my liking.

I think the best example of what I felt was missing in the games would be that one mission in Emprise du Lion where you have to go rescue the townspeople in the quarry?

It probably have to do with DAI's much more open world compared to DAO/DA2...I find that quest interesting because until I read your post I had no idea that we were supposed to be rescuing them. For me that map (why I was here) was about killing red templars/maybe learning more about them. So I was minding my own business when suddenly I hear a shout 'Rescue us! Don't leave us here!' (and no please either....how rude!) which was cool...and I proceeded with leaving them (sadly no option to kill them so they shut up /sigh) :) And maybe that was what was missing with all these side quests...I could either ignore them or do them like some damn hero. Where is the option to ask 'why?'. Why should I bother to search for some ring/go put flowers on a grave of someone's grandma/etc.

But personally for me the main quest was excellent (disregarding what you think of the main baddy). But it was also made like DAO/DA2 were (much smaller spaces/maps). So Bioware have to think whether they want to stick with the huge open world and hope to improve or make it smaller and do what they already do so good (fill it with nice stories etc....) I guess?

To finish on a positive note since the last posts seem to be all about what a horrible game this is and this thread isn't really about that (afaik ofcourse) - they made one wonderfull addition which (for me) more than make up for the personality change from DA2 : the option for you to pick what/if you want to say anything when your companions are talking...which sadly is not often enought so far...but I hear there is some banter bug so who knows....

I would have liked a story related to your background, possibly similar to the origins in Origins. It only would have needed one for each race. Trevelyan family stuff, Carta Stuff, Dalish stuff and Tal Vashoth Merc group stuff. A personal link between your hero and the world because to me it just felt like getting dropped in out of nowhere. A little context about who you were would be enjoyable, at least to me.

Also minor explanation needed as a Mage Trevelyan you talk about how you are not one of the rebel mages but... Isn't that why you were at the conclave?

The deeper you get in to the crafting the better it reveals itself to be. It is the one area they absolutely nailed!

Except they never did end up giving us as much freedom as they alluded to, when it comes to being able to wear what you want by simply using better materials.

Higher tier schematics are just better, period. Would have liked to have been able to buy superior tier 3 versions of lower tier armour.

I just wish they had taken the SWToR route. It may be an mmo but every planet has it's own storyline, sometimes with decisions that make you go on different quests. That's aside of your main class mission there, not to mention chained sotry quests, like the Revanite cult on Dromund Kaas.

Origin also had some creepy moment and I do agree with demon. In origin pride demon were bad ass. Now they're roaming in the wild.

Well, aside from the Templar and Nightmare quests, demons have pretty much become simple monsters to be killed... that was pretty underwhelming, even with the narrative reasons behind it.

-A storage chest or my upgrade part to not take up inventory space.

-To not have to travel back to Skyhold to do missions on the wartable (Leliana has those crows , I should be able to send them a note to go do some missions)

Also why on earth do I have to wait for a mission for 10+ hours to be finished? I planned playing the game not waiting for a timer.

-Polite NPCs (who wont start to talk to me, then leave mid-sentence to do the dishes/muck the horses...)

-Working laws of physics

-Obedient party members (who will follow me even if i go in to a tunnel)

I also expected:
-longer main story
-choices/upgrades that do matter
-allocatable attribute points
-more skill slots on PC
-better AI

Wasn't it Laidlaw who wrote a lot of the side quests by the way? Wouldn't that explain why they feel so lacking? No offense to Laidlaw, but he is the creative director and not a writer on the project, and honestly it kind of shows when he decides to partake in the actual writing process.

The lack of any real strong demons aside from Nightmare really showed. If you went the mage path you didn't even see Envy really shine. But yeah, having pride demons who were always pretty menacing in DA:O and DA:2 put into minor enemy roles was pretty upsetting to see.

I think one of the big things aside from Skyhold's customization being pretty meh was the areas. Not just the lack of a story like in SWTOR but also after you finished up an area it feels extremely desolate and empty. Hinterlands when you first get there is embroiled in a war between the mages and the templars and after you finish with it nothing really takes its place. No NPC villagers trying to rebuild the outlying areas of Redcliffe after the war, no random merchants wandering the roads as trade resumes, it just becomes a huge empty space.

A decent plot is missing.

Decisions that matter and change the story are missing,

Engaging and immersive characters are missing (ok, except Iron Bull and Dorian, and I'm straight!!).

What's not missing is empty space crammed full with pointless and meaningless point and click quests that do nothing for the story or characters but is called content. Plenty of that stuff to go around.

*sigh*

There is actually at least one choice to deal with a demon, as far I know. Ishmael offers you a deal, and while I didn't take it, I imagine you could. Still, yes, he's a hidden side quest with no apparent tie ins, and it doesn't hit half as close to home as all the deals in 1 and 2.
I agree with almost all of these points. The pointless areas really got to me, the lack of real variation in combat (especially on nightmare), the tedium of codexes telling stories instead of people. And children. Bioware CANNOT write children. Every child in a dragon age game so far looks and feels.... Special. Kerian is ten, but acts like he's five. They're child actors talk in slow motion, and it really just makes you wonder if there's something wrong with these kids (InIncluding Connor, the one kid in 2).
My biggest complaint is the lack of choice. In an RPG. Every quest in origins had about three different ways to complete. Now it's all fetch and gather mmo quests. Really disappointing.

I'm not really here to complain, but reading through this thread does engender a more critical consideration for sure. It has been pointed out that a number of prerelease gameplay shown was ultimately changed or simply cut from the game. Had the bulk of what WAS shown in that context been more from the earliest days of the marketing push, that might be understandable.

But.

Even supposedly planned quest content that was still being referenced by the Bioware gang as late as summer, failed to appear or did so in an entirely different manner than what they had been discussing just weeks ago?  I have yet to sample multiplayer. I'm not all that invested in endless crafting. Losing story content or having it specifically changed from what I was being shown and what I was being told to expect is an entirely different matter.

I have a really gut level suspicion that a degree of the commentary expressed in this thread is going to get sadly kicked up another notch, if what I think I see between the cracks is in the offing with upcoming dlc. Time will tell!

What it feels like to me is this:

DAO - I met this guy. He's a total surprise. I wasn't expecting anything much from him beyond the usual entertainment and he turns out to be amazing, surpassing my expectations and hopes in every way. We're together for a very long time before things start to get stale and it's time to move on.

DA2 - We meet up again, a while later. But it's just not the same. Not even remotely. His personality is different and overall in a good way but but there's no spark. No fun. No swept away with it like when we first met and it doesn't last very long. I realize it's really over and done for good and lay to rest any ideas of us getting back together.

DAI - I start hearing things about him and they are all good. They remind me of how amazing it was when we first got together. I feel pangs of nostalgia. The more stuff I hear the more I think maybe this time it will be as great as it was before. Then we get together and initially it's wonderful (with some hiccups but easy to overlook). But as time progresses, it just becomes more and more apparent that there's nothing there. It's an empty relationship, not even remotely fulfilling and I grow tired of it until I just end it out of sheer boredom and wanting to just be done with it. There's still the wonderful nostalgia for what was but what is cannot even begin to compare to that which is such a let down because I really thought it would be different, like when we first met or close to it.

That's how the games feel to me.

You think the missing content will be DLC?

Well that wouldn't surprise me a tiny bit and it would just be that they decided to do it later after all the stir about day 1 DLC that should have been included. If that's what you mean then likely we'll have a little wait but not too long. Just enough to buy them some time for 'true' DLC because they decided to hit us up for more money (as exhibited with multiplayer) by using content already made to boost sales. It's an easy way to make money albeit if this stuff was shown in trailers it is deceitful. Almost like a bait and switch. I certainly wouldn't put it past them. This tactic goes all the way back to The Sims. Once they realized people would pay money for textures and Meshes, they used that to profit off the game in the next installment. Seems that Day 1 DLC despite being ripped apart for having it was still profitable enough to do and so they've just learned how to up the anti and do it in a way that most people won't realize that is what just happened, especially the hardcore fans that can't see how they were just slammed, much like the ones who are willing to ignore the many bugs which should have been fixed before release.

I see this comment a lot, and I feel like I'm missing something. It feels like armors have no variety. I've been wearing the same enchanter robe (or a better version of it) since the start of the game and I'm level 16. I've seen warden/orlesian battlemage armor, but those don't come with upgradeable parts. It really feels like I'm missing something because the crafting system seems really barebones. :x

The crafting system mostly reminded me that it's almost 2015 and single player fantasy games still won't incorporate some type of wardrobe system so I can have my characters wearing the armor I like most.

Crafting was something I liked but it was kind of messy in design because it was all thrown together and you would have to remove items to upgrade them like Bianca which was a total pain. That said, I really did like it because my warrior looked damn cool in vanguard armor that almost looked rogue-ish but had the heavy armor stats. Kudos for that. Also, you could make formal attire into armor! That rocked! If I wasn't forced to wear those jammies around skyhold, I'd be wearing that aweome formal attire I crafted because it looks really nice.

It's not a very involved system. It's clumsy if you don't get rid of what you don't want because it all sits there and if you are like me getting the higher level plans through cullen as perks then you end up with a lot of inferior ones to scroll through. And when you upgrade you have everything showing up so you have to sell stuff. It gets downright confusing having to checks which is what. But overall, it's a major boon IMHO because I was making armors and weapons far above whatever I found well before I found them and then making a ton of money off these supposedly better items because mine were superior to theirs and far sooner than I got them. I got rich by selling most of the good stuff I looted. I think I was about 30k at some point and had nothing to spend it on.

As for collecting what I needed, I will admit I used the glitch there to double inventory on crafting items because it's just not my thing to go chase down what I needed. I'd rather just buy them but I could not. Can we buy any of that stuff? I just read we can buy elfroot somewhere which surprised me.

Through a perk with cullen for crafting plans you can get mage stuff or scout stuff or warrior stuff. The mage gave me superior armor for mages. I think it was enchanter or one above that. I was able to make legs and arms I think but I don't remember if that was something I bought maybe in the shops where we go early in the game - val royale? or if I found them. I'm not really sure. But getting that perk from cullen for a mage is very much worth it. I had Dorian in some great armor and I could tailor it to his needs because I could pick items with certain stats to make it ideal for him. Magic buffs, healing bonuses, that sort of stuff. Barrier bonuses as well. You pick the item you have for the slot and see what it says. Dorian got magic and healing as a rule. Certain protections if I was going after something specific. I game my warriors health boosting shields because they weren't always good with guard until I locked them into it on tactics as preferred. So that really is a major perk of the system. Yeah, materials are a pain. For that I use the double glitch or have one of my advisors go looking for stuff. For mages, it was kind of required that you double what you found which is why I think they left that little glitch in there. I never found materials in shops but I didn't look like crazy after initially trying and not seeing anything but some plans. I'd rather loot sell then buy what I need. If I have to forage, I'm out. Too much boring for me.

I really love the game so don't misinterpret this, but it really misses out on some things. I love sidequests, but a lot of them are just plain boring. I enjoyed the quests for Fairbanks in the Emerald Graves and the underwater Rift in Crestwood, but those were a rarity compared to the boring ones.

Also, tactics really need to be back. I get that the engine may be part of the problem, but I really hate micromanaging. If I want to set up an exact order for Iron Bull to use his Reaver abilities in it would be nice to just do it once in a menu instead of every single time I go in a fight. I shouldn't have to tell Cassandra (or Blackwall) to go taunt an enemy attacking Sera every fight. I wouldn't be upset about this if it wasn't such a huge part of gameplay in the first two.

And really, can we please have actually meaningful upgrades to Skyhold? 3 extra pots or some gold that I have no idea where to get shouldn't be my bonuses for doing a major upgrade. Same goes for the sparring ring/infirmary and the Mage/Templar tower. Even more, what's stopping me from having the sparring ring and infirmary? They both aren't located in the same spot? I feel DLC incoming for this.

Again, the game did a lot of things right, and for the first forray into even a semi-open world since BG2 it was a good effort by Bioware. I really enjoyed the main party members, main questline, and the Inner Circle quests. They just really need to fix some things before the inevitable fourth game in 3 years or so. Preferably in Seheron, Par Vollan, Tevinter, or all 3.
