HORNS UP!!!
I think I'm one of the only folks in the thread that knew that Krem was FTM by the first big chance at conversation with him at Haven.
I didn't know that there was going to be a FTM transgender character at all in the game. With Krem, I guess I could tell right away. He reminded of some of the transgender folks that I've met in the LGBT community here in Denver. I knew he wasn't born a man by our second conversation, and I was instantly thrilled. I was thinking, "Wow, BioWare did it. A person that's FTM transgender that's kick a**. So rare to see anywhere. They did such a good job too. This character is amazing."
I did flinch a little bit at some of the "passing" comments as well. It just seemed too harshly put for my character. She's ex-Carta, but prefers to be more tactful than that. As a bi/pansexual player, that was rather uncomfortable.
I found Iron Bull's direct statements about Krem being a man a little endearing. In my mind, the rather aggressive tone that Bull takes towards some of the questions made sense. Bull's probably had to spend years sternly correcting people if/when they found out that Krem wasn't born as the gender he knew himself to be. Bull's still Qunari and they are very blunt as a whole, especially to their closest friends and allies. I thought that was a good way to remind the player of this. He reminded me of Sten in that moment, in a very positive way.
I did not know that was Jennifer Hale doing the voice. Just when I thought my respect couldn't go any higher for the woman, she does this amazing character. I can understand (as much as a cis-gender person can,) why some were disappointed that a transgender actor didn't do the voice. That would have been awesome to see.
I vote for Harding (rogue), Mae (mage) and Krem (warrior) as companions for the next Dragon Age game. Not only do I think all of those characters rock, but there's a balanced party right there.
Oh and Krem will never ever be chosen over the Qunari in any playthrough. I can always find other allies, other ways to build my army. There is only one Krem.
