In today's blog post, @PatrickWeekes talks about writing Cremisius Aclassi, Iron Bull's 2nd in command http://blog.bioware.com/?p=7812 #DAI

Such a great read. Really does make me happy that there were so much genuine hard work to get as much as possible right.

Bull is all around awesome in every way. He's like Mary Poppins, haha. I can't wait for my next playthrough to romance him; Krem can be our best man! :P

Oh God, don't tempt me... I'm still itching to draw more, so if I'm not careful I may find myself doodling Krem as Bert!

(Maybe Krem doing that chimney dance over the chairs, since he seems to love standing on them so much...)

How bad is it that I've already got 700 words in another fic?

I was really nervous about speaking to Krem about his being trans at first because of the dialogue options.

I was super scared of offending him, but he was a sweetheart about all my questions.

You know I was like that at first but then I decided it just wouldn't fit my Inquisitor to go all eggshells around him. My Lady Adaar is used to people looking at her weird and treating her like a freak on account of her horns, she would rather people just get over it and treat her like a person. So she rarely gives a crap about offending others with a lot of her actions and words. That doesn't mean she's disrespectful, but she has no problem speaking her mind, no matter who it offends.

Therefore the idea of having her suddenly not be that forthcoming when talking to Krem, just because he's trans, simply didn't work for me. It was treating him differently just because of his gender identity. To say the least, this was both inappropriate and counterproductive.

Instead my Inquisitor fearlessly strolled right up and bluntly asked what she wanted to ask. I had no problem with her bumbling and potentially insensitive questions because the fact is most people are like that. Many people don't really understand what it means to be transgendered - even for simple things like why they may be using the wrong pronouns - because most people don't have the opportunity to learn.  And it's only by messing up and asking stupid questions that people can gain understanding and get past the awkwardness.

So I fully enjoyed the chance to cheerfully, and bluntly, ask all those potentially embarrassing  questions, as well as get the wonderful 'well duh!' answers. I especially loved Bull's responses, I don't think I truly understood Krem until I saw him through Bull's perspective.

That said I did wait until I could talk to Krem and Bull separately about it. In part out of respect, but also because there was no reason to bring it up when meeting the rest of the Chargers. It would have been unfair for Krem's gender to overshadow the rest of the awesome characters in the Chargers. It's just a part of his character, not his entire character, and there's no reason it should be more important then discussing Dalish and her use of "Archery" ( not magic ) with her special "Bow" ( not a staff ).

Did I mention how badly I want a Bull's Chargers DLC?

I want a little plushie Iron Bull that says motivational phrases and dirty jokes when you squeeze it. And a Krem figure. Definitely a Krem figure.

I wish the OP was updated to list links to art and fic, I need to go through and save stuff, lol.

I bet we could talk Tantopat into changing the first post into a collection post. :) That's how all of the other character posts seem to work and, dang it, we're here to stay.

I was thinking about seeing if we could add in something on that first post about thread behavior anyway. Maybe c/p Allan's post (the one with the links) right there at the top. I'd love to make a banner or something we could put up there, too. Bejewel the place a little! (sparkle and shine!)

A good read, I'm glad he got people in the community to look things over. However, it's a little odd he keeps saying "genderqueer community" when Krem seems to be a binary trans character, and genderqueer falls under the transgender umbrella, not the other way around.

Weekes just addressed that actually.

Yeah, let's get this looking like a legit character thread.

Yeah, that was the moment I realised not only how close he is with his Chargers, but also how much he loves and respects them. They're not just his mercenary company - they're truly "his boys". Made me care about his character a lot more as well. I had been kinda ignoring him because he wasn't a character that made me go "Damn, I gotta hear what he has to say about X!". After those discussions I went over to see him a lot more often.

Another reason

Spoiler

I'll never be able to save the dreadnought. We're the inquisition, damnit! We can save the world without the qunari's help if they're hellbent on sacrificing my people.

I cried at the mere thought.

See my Eavan is very politically correct. She's been called a delight with a silver tongue by various Orlesian nobles. She's clever and intelligent, and asking bumbling questions is not at all her style.

So I bit my lip, pretended she'd had a few drinks at that point and asked the least offensive question possible. And I am so, so glad I did. <3

Cool. I'm kind of way out of the twitter loop, just could never get into it. I really should try, I suppose, I miss so much stuff. The trans community can be so picky about labels, lol, I don't blame him getting things confused. What's kosher in one trans community may be totally toxic in another, and he's doing a wonderful job of maneuvering through it all.

The beauty of this game is being able to make truly unique and personalized characters that you want to make. So having the option of being very sensitive and inoffensive to everyone is every bit as valuable as the option to be a jerk to everyone.

Kudos to you and your delightfully silver tongued Inquisitor.

I still love calling out nobles on their bs with a gloriously intentional lack of tact and decorum.  B)

A transwoman's voice can be quite feminine, mine is said to be very feminine.  It takes a lot of practice and effort to soften the voice and find the right tone and pitch but it can be done, please don't use that excuse if you ever make a transwoman in your games, please.  Bear in mind that even without what we have today to help with transition, there is and was still ways to try and present as the gender identity you were born with.

Transition, after all, is a series of baby steps and a lot of hard work.

I've stuck to mostly clever options this time around. Eavan and Bull have the best relationships because they throw witty one liners at one another. Eavan only holds her tongue when she knows it'll net her something - like the empress' respect or not making Krem cry or getting Cullen in bed.

I cannot wait to play Acantha Adaar who'll be the most demure and quiet qunari rogue. Never a rough word or misplaced sentiment; I'm looking forward to seeing how her and Bull in a romance are, because she'll be so saccharine compared to his vinegar.

Eventually I'd get around to making a rough and tumble guy who has no idea how to behave in polite society and that conversation with Krem will be fascinating; I imagine lots of back thumping and drinking.

First time I met Krem I was distracted by something or other, dismissed him by saying yeah I'll meet Iron Bull in a bit, and went around doing whatever the hell it was I was doing at the time. It wasn't until the second time I met him during Bull's introduction that I realized he was a she. So, me being my naturally oblivious self, I wrote her off as a mannish woman and treated her like anyone else. Talked to her occasionally to get missions for the wartable and pretty much added her to my list of people to swing by when at Haven/Skyhold to see if they wanted to talk.

So, hours into my play through later I get the drink with the Chargers scene and obliviously point out to Krem that she doesn't need to pretend to be a woman to fight for us. Her response of "I'm not pretending" was a bit like being mentally hit by a 2x4. My response (after several seconds of staring blankly at the screen) was pretty much along the lines of 'oh, she's actually a he...okay.' And I went back to treating him like I did everyone else, while mentally strangling myself for being an unobservant insensitive asshat.

Long story short, I really like Krem and think that he, Bull, and the other Chargers (for whatever reason Dalish cracks me up) would make for an interesting prequel dlc in the same vein as Leliana's for DAO.

I really enjoyed Krem's character, although I wish I could've taken the investigate-options without sounding like an absolute misgendering a**hole (although I assume that's the whole point?). But I am so happy to see Bull and Krem tell my Inquisitor off and set her straight. Other than that, I really enjoyed talking to him. And yes, the Bull will always

Spoiler

But I think I found a bug related to him: all the flirting options are missing! That should probably be fixed asap.

Truthfully I was happy with the choices given, it made the choices more realistic to me, people make comments like that and I think it's important that people see the affect questions like those can have on a trans person. I loved how BioWare wrote Krem and I'm ecstatic at most of the reactions to him.

While it is good to have such choices, it makes it difficult for people who know that phrasing is inappropriate feel awkward and shy away from having that conversation.

So there should be some politically correct choices as well.

I wish there had been a knowledgeable option. For just about everything in the game there's an option to sound like you know something about whatever's going on, except for Krem.

There was a choice that was accepting Krem's gender identity.

Edit: it took me awhile to find it though.

I tried to pick the most polite ones, but they still tended to have a "you want to be a man" tone rather than a "you are a man" tone.

I may have been confused based on paraphrasing. I rarely say what I want to on the dialogue wheel...

I thought that there was one that seemed accepting to me but I'll have to look again because I don't remember the exact wording.

Edit: I was mortified by what my inquisitor said on the first choice I picked and was rather aggravated with her. I think they made it so we would see the choices that we may not have wanted to say. I'm not sure if that makes sense.
