Uhhhh... just one look at anime nullifies that argument.

But please, do continue your "male elves need to look more butch because one character in the DA universe does" argument.

Yeah, except this is Dragon Age.  A video game.  Not anime.  Nor is it Lord of the Rings.  Take TES for example.  In TES lore, elves are actually kind of homely looking.  It does not borrow heavily from the way Tolkien did his elves or the way anime portrays elves.  Is there some unwritten rule somewhere that all elves have to look like bishies?  Because that's complete and utter nonsense.  Each universe has the prerogative to make elves in their own way.

It's just a shame BioWare decided to go with the "JESUS CHRIST, MY EYES" route with the male elves in this installment.

Oh, and you used the word "butch" out of context.  Fenris isn't a character that could be described as butch.  That doesn't even make any sense.

You're the one who came into a thread where people are enjoying their male elves, and decided that they all "look like women".  (Which I, as a woman, take offense to, but I'll let it drop.)

You can always leave the thread if you're that unhappy with what other people like.

Tbh, I think that male elves (at least in the DA universe), like ALL people, have variety.  Some are very masculine, some are more androgynous...

It all boils down to personal preference.  I think every elf posted here is fabulous and the new CC is allowing endless possibility.

I think the male elves are perhaps the most diverse of all the CC in terms of variety. The fact that we can make a feminine/dainty male elf or turn around and make a masculine, rugged male elf speaks volumes of the success of the CC. (Except for the hair because well.. I think BioWare needs to take some hairstyling classes haha).

The male elves are actually pretty versatile in what you can manage with the faces.   The hair...THAT is another thing entirely...

I used the vaguely mohawk-y hairstyle (like Krem). It is good for following the vertical line of the body's proportions without requiring you to distort the face.

IMAGE:

Spoiler

...I found that using most of the other hairstyles made the horizontal proportions of the head seem too at-odds with the body.

Using that hair means you can give the illusion of the head being longer and thinner - like the body - but ultimately upon closer inspection you can see he's a normal-lookin' dude.

Where did you find that armor?

I think you buy the schematic from the Dalish merchant in the Exalted Plains - which requires enough favour - but I can't be sure. It is T3, so it might be Hissing Wastes' famous dog merchant in the ravine.

It is elf-trained, rogue only. (This does not include Sera.) If you are not an elf rogue, no one can wear it. (Unless you use Snofleur skin, so Solas or any elf Inqi can wear it.)

I'm proud of my male Lavellan. He's actually going to be my canon Inquisitor. I don't remember what preset I started out with, but I did post him in the sliders thread.

ETA: I don't think he looks overly feminine. I was going for a more masculine look with him. I think one of the main reasons male elves don't look as manly is because they can't have any facial hair, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some people prefer a clean shaven look and so prefer male elves over male humans, for example. Another trick to making your elf look a little more manly is to give him a stronger jawline and chin.

Hi everyone.

This is my first time participating in the forums and that's mostly due to the fact that after recreating my male elf's face a million times, I finally broke and googled for help.

I came across this thread and then realised how horrible I am at this lol, some of the ones here are sooo good!

My aim was to basically make a masculine-ish face without it being too wide and looking too large for his head.

This is all I could come up with, which I know needs a lot more fine tuning but at this point I want to actually play the game now hahaha.

I'll preface by saying that I blatantly stole inspiration for my character from Ketten who made the best looking male elf that I've personally seen and convinced me to make one for my second playthrough. Which is something I never do because I've just never liked the male elf models in DA games, but I got to something that's really grown on me with Cyrion down below. He fits the bill of all the things I like with my male characters. Strong jawline, prominent brow, high cheekbones, distinguished nose, scars suitable to someone who's seen battle in his time. If I had any sort of advise I'd say lower the brow down a little and turn the nostrils up slightly if you want your elf to have a scowl or pissed off resting expression. I think this makes the character a bit more intimidating looking if that's what you're going for. Also use a complexion that isn't really clear and spotless if you want a more rugged look.

Also, Qunari ale does not compute with the Elven digestive system it appears...

I am very proud of my male Lavellan. Stagely, I found much easier to do a male Elf I liked, than a female one.

You could probably mistake him for a chick in the right/wrong lighting but I don't see that as a mistake or an objectively bad thing. He's pretty and I can dig that.

There are some male elf complexions that give them stubble (at least on ultra shader settings), like the one third from the right. The problem with giving them an overly strong jaw and chin imo is that they very easily start looking like comic-book caricatures. Also, since male elves get a very slender body with narrow shoulders, making the face wide and strong easily gives the appearance of the head being too large for the body.

Creating a male elf who's head didn't look too big for the rest of his body was definitely my hardest trial in the CC.  Can't count how many times I made what I thought was the best guy elf I could manage, only to get through the first bit of scenes and think he'd topple over if his head were any bigger.  I finally opted for head #4, which looks childishly small in the CC but works once you're in game.

Mind you, I don't WANT my male elves to be less slender.  Elves, imo, are supposed to be much slighter than their human and dwarf compatriots.  So the fact my guy is really, really lean only suits my interpretation of how he's supposed to look.  And seriously.  I think Dorian likes him fine just the way he is, lol.

That being said, I'm still weirded out by whatever's going on with male elves and their arms.

Yeah, I agree it's not the slenderness in itself that's the problem but rather something in how it all comes together. Proportions, animations, postures, etc. It just doesn't come out looking right.

I agree. I have no problem with slenderness. I don't want my male elf to have the exact same proportions as a human male, but whatever happened to Fenris' type of slenderness?

Yeah, they had it just right there. Skinny, but presentable. And still believable as a badass warrior too.
