This video reminded me that I am glad that there is more to gaming than the voicechat in online multiplayer, that's all I got out of it.

None of these people seem interested to know why this happens.

You go on-line and vicious trolls will pick on anything. Gender, race, sexuality, your appearance (if you show your face), the way you talk etc.

You go for on line gaming and you get a lot of this behaviour.

Do women have it worse than men? Perhaps.

The important question is why? Why is it that women get picked on more.

It's not the fault of the women. However it is still important to understand why.

It is also important to know who the culprits are.

This isn't the result of a culture of sexism. This is the result of the larger issue of on line bullying. Being a white male doesn't make one immune, though apparently it makes one oblivious.

Women get picked on, not because of "sexism" but because there are nasty people out there.

If you see the barrage of abuse that men get on the internet (and yes they get those creepy sexually objectifying messages too) then you realise that this is to do with on line trolling!

I'm reading an article about Feminism. Some of their extreme leaders through history have had extremely stupid ideas!

Part of the problem is that a lot of these people aren't gamers. Since they don't do online gaming they don't know that these are trolls being trolls who will attack any part of you that they think will give them the best response.

Not that I think it's okay just because it's trolling, but people looking in from the outside see it and immediately jump to sexism when in reality people are just trying to get a response out of you. Stopping the sexism part of it isn't going to stop the verbal abuse.

Trolls like to pick on minority groups.

LGBT's, people of ethnic minorities, disabled etc.

While women do make a sizeable chunk of gamers, when it comes to on line gamers, women are in the minority making them key targets for trolls.

I'm sorry but I'm not going to take claims on culture seriously (gaming or otherwise) from a circlejerk of rich white hipsters.

Please stop spreading this fraud's propaganda around. She's gotten enough exposure as it is and it's ironically her detractors that made it so. She knows this and pokes the beehive whenever she can to drum up more publicity for herself and keep the donations rolling in. You've been had. Just walk away.

Sight. Guy get bullied more than enough online. (and by female also). We're bullied differently, but we're bullied . Also they don't talk about the advantage of being a woman. Just try to play has a female character with a female name( in a MMO for instance) and you won't ever has it that easy. You will be literally spammed with ''gift'' and people tend to be much nicer to you.  Guy doing the carpet in front of you because you pretend to have a rack. That a privilege that they don't see because like they said. It become invisible when you're the privileged one.

Also guess what. There's woman that stalk guy too, but we never heard about this. The hypocrisy is strong. But when it a woman it ''cute'', and a guy it ''creepy''. II so love all the double-standard created byt these feminazi.

Sexism against men doesn't really get much of a reaction.

A few people got angry.

If an equally unacceptable remark had been made towards women it would be met with outrage.

Is it any wonder why there is so much sexism against women in gaming. Because men and women would be outraged, thus the troll would get what they want.

Sexism against either gender is unacceptable. It's just that sexism against women gets a bigger outrage. If I wanted to troll I wouldn't waste my time making sexist comments against men. I'd get a few people laughing at me and the occasional person getting angry. But if I made a sexist comment about a woman, I'd be getting lots of negative attention. People who crave negative attention go for homophobic, racist and misogynist remarks.

The worst groupthink I have seen and I've spent plenty of time around conservative Christian groups and refugees from Communism*. My respect for Jonathan McIntosh is about 0.

*NOTE: I am talking about the groupthink itself, not the known consequences of it. Many of the furthest fundie Christians will often live and let live, and many under Communist states gained a healthy mistrust in government.

I'm disappointed at the lack of 'Other: Other' votes.

Edit to add:

I didn't know I was gay, until I began playing Call of Duty.  Apparently, I'm also black, and my mom has slept with dozens of 13 year olds.  Crazy.

[Not bringing games that have player creator into this equation, since because of the spirit of "be who you want to be", people would complain if you couldn't play as a woman].

The vast majority of games without player creators have male protagonists.

Games where you play as a woman are actually numerous. The list is huge, but of course it is. The gaming industry has been around so long that even if female protagonists made up 0.5% of all protagonists (they make up a much bigger portion of non player created protagonists) there would still be hundreds of thousands of female protagonists.

This is not sexism. This is gender disparity.

The reason is supply and demand.

However there is another point I wish to bring up. Female characters are not created to fill in a void for female characters. Same applies to non whites, LGBT characters, disabled characters etc. Non white male characters are created to fit the vision that the creators have in mind. That's it. White male characters are created to fit the vision the creators have in mind too.

Lara Croft and Samus Aran are amazing characters because they are not created to fill a void. They are created because writers took the time to write interesting and engaging characters. If you want more of these amazing female characters you one wait and more will come at a steady but slow rate, or more women could make games. There are plenty of women in the gaming industry who make great games. As more women enter the industry, you'll see even more female characters, and heck there will still be the slow and steady stream of men writing female characters too.
