The GTX 970 at stock speeds does *not* outperform a GTX 980, but they can be overclocked to meet or slightly exceed a GTX 980's performance.

As I briefly mentioned in the original post, I paid £500 for a GTX 780ti. After two faulty cards I went through a lot of effort to get a GTX 980 as a replacement. I technically paid extra, but originally it was for a GTX 780ti.

Back on topic, however...  :)

Updated original post with more information, but to clarify I do have the latest drivers installed (fresh/clean), and there's no MSAA.

Considering how much you pay for it, it's over price. Bigger number doesn't mean it's the best.

I'm quite aware of that. My point is I paid full price for a GTX 780ti. The 900 series wasn't released when I made that purchase. I had two faulty GTX 780ti cards, and then when I made the RMA for the second faulty unit I made it quite clear I wasn't happy with the product and level of service (I did say this was a long story, lol), and eventually convinced them to give me a GTX 980 instead.

Regardless, I have a GTX 980 and I'm having problems running this game.

Well if they gave you a 970 you may be able to play the game but I have no idea if they will refund you the rest of the money.

My 290X doesn't give any errors like that, using the Catalyst 14.11.2 drivers. I've tracked VRAM usage exceed 3.5GBs on it though.

I have the Gigabyte GTX980 G1 Gaming. Other than fact that at load it sounds like a vacuum cleaner (many fans), I have had no issues running DAI with everything on max settings, except MSAA off.

sli GTX980's.  Have everything maxed, including Fade Touched textures.  No post processing AA (hate blur), 4x MSAA via in game with 4x "Enhance the application" in NVidia control panel.  If I don't run out of VRAM, you shouldn't at the same settings.  SLI just means I'll get extra frames, but I have the same VRAM limitations you would.  Something's definitely not right.

Bad memory on the gpu?

Never had that happen but I have had bad ram sticks before and it sounds similar.

I don't even know if that happens with gpus

One question, and sorry if it's been asked/answered already, but are you having any issue's with other games? Or is this only happening with DAI?

It is possible you have a bad GPU, in which case you'd expect to maybe/likely be having same, or similar, issue's with other games (especially if they are graphically demanding).

It could also be a sign that your PSU is going and not giving enough power to the GPU consistently enough - and when the power drops you get the 'out-of-memory' error. What PSU (Power Supply) do you have? Brand & wattage?

The 970 patch came out a few days ago for the latest games like DAI, far cry 4 and ACU, these games most likely have the same issue with DAI although mine has no issues.

Op I have the same card, I haven't experienced your problem and the game run's fine pretty much at a constant 60... there's definitely something wrong either you have a faulty hardware somewhere, maybe even the card itself or some program conflicting within your system.

Wonder if OP is using the same manufacturer for his GPU and motherboard ? As a rule we are supposed to make sure they are the same for warranty and other issues.

Running the game in 1080p 2xMSAA on ultra with 680gtx sli, so even if I have a little less power then a 980gtx and I have only 2g of VRAM and never have any issue with my vram even when I was playing with a 1440p monitor.

Very much doubt it, given the hassle beforehand.

Coolermaster 600w. 3x SSD installed on the system, 2x Caviar Black's. No lighting. About four case fans.

I tried on Battlefield 4 yesterday. Game ran butter-smooth on Ultra settings. I cranked up resolution scale to 200% and instant crash. I wouldn't play with the setting like that anyway, but my old GTX 670 would just run at snails pace. No crash.

When you run DAI, what is the percentage of usage on CPU, RAM, and SWAP Usage?

It does sound there might be a problem somewhere in your system. GPU or PSU most likely. The CM isn't anything to write home about but the 980 uses so little power it could be ran on a toaster, unless it's failing. How long have you had that GTX 980? Noticed any other anomalies?

The CPU runs around 80%-90% across all cores. Possible throttling?

RAM usage is about 5GB.

Not sure what SWAP is?

I can agree on the PSU, but with my build I would imagine it would be adequate.

GTX 980 is about two weeks old.
Only other anomalies I've noticed is that it also has performance issues with Far Cry 4 and Far Cry 3, but they're Ubisoft titles so I'm sure that's just the norm.

The EVGA 900 series cards have been a bit wonky since launch. It's possible you just have a dud. You could try RMAing it and see if EVGA will replace it.

I've battled a fair bit of customer service in my time, and EVGA has probably been the best. I've gotten them to fix problems for me at 1am on a sunday, and they sent me a new card without having had to receive the old one. Their RMA process is probably as good as it can be, unless something has changed in the past couple of years.

So to give an update to my situation with 970SLI,

I decided to just try the game using windows 8.1, even though I don't intend to use it, and it definitely plays the game better.

On my win 7 partition, using 344.47 drivers I get bad stuttering and hitching, both video and audio, in cutscenes, and this with all the *fixes* available for PC version.

All same fixes on Win8.1 partition, using 344.80 drivers and the game is much smoother in cut scenes with higher framerate overall, and less jerkiness.
That said, there are still shimmering textures, quite a bit in fact, and I had my first ever hard lock in the game while playing it on the 8.1 install.

Gonna play a bit more today to test further, but seems clear to me that utilizing dx11 where windows 7 cannot makes a pretty big difference to the game.

Hope that us win 7 users will get some love with upcoming drivers and a patch

I've been trying not to derail the thread, but best I explain for clarity.

Basically I had a few issues with their service + the inconvenience of two faulty cards. I told them I wasn't happy with their line-up of 780ti's and as a gesture of goodwill they sent me a 980. Good customer service after a lot of hassle, unfortunately.

That said, I'd rather not bother them unless I'm 100% certain there is a fault, though I have contacted them to ask if they have any suggestions. My thread on the nVidia forums has been left unanswered, so long luck there. =(

It does seem odd. Hmmm. To whoever has a 980 (preferably EVGA 980 SC 4GB, for good comparison), what is your FPS from the spawn point in Skyhold? What about looking out from the throne room? If you've been to Fallow Mire, what is your FPS around

Spoiler
?

Is it possible you are using to much PageFile that is gobbling memory?

This error has been around for a while and if you Google it, you will know that it is most likely not a graphic card issue because it has plagues multiple Nvidia and AMD cards for years.

Is it possible you are using to much PageFile that is gobbling memory?

Or some people disable pagefile because they are using SSD. It could result in this error as well.

Also, this Error is not 100% accurate. It could be caused by something else but windows is just reporting the last error. Meaning: You didnt run out of memory, something could have prevented the application from getting the vram information accurately and hence resulting in the application telling you that it ran out of memory.

Try to configure nvidia control panel and set everything that can set to application control.

Play in full screen

Turn off post processing in game

Lower shadow

Try typing these lines in the in game console:

Worldrender.motionblurenable 0

Renderdevice.renderaheadlimit 1

Renderdevice.triple bufferingenable 1
