I have tons of warden stuff to give to him and he is showing on my map but the only person on the barn is the horse breeder

He's disappeared from my barn too.  Found him out chopping wood a day or two ago, but now I have a quest marker showing for him in the barn, but he's not there.  Saving and reloading doesn't help -- I saved and closed down the game last night standing in the barn, and when I started it today the marker is still there, but no Blackwell.

That's because he isn't supposed to be there at that certain point. You are on a "special" quest, find the item in the stables that forwards the quest.

Ok slightly confused. I'm guessing the OP is talking about wanting to talk to Blackwell to turn in Memories of the Grey items they've found in the zones yes?

 

What's this "special" quest you are talking about MasterSolo and what item must one find in the stables for this?

The thing I'm assuming the OP is talking about si when going to the spot(the head icon) where a party member is supposed to be, and the said party member is missing. That can happen with any party member and is usually fixed with a save and reload.

 

Now in the case with Joe_S, where he says there is a quest marker and not the head icon, basically and not to spoil anything, there's an instance where

Blackwall leaves the party, and leaves a note(the quest marker) in the stables. The guy needs to pick up the note to continue the quest.

ah I see now ...two different quests being discussed it seems. Yes I agree with you on the save/reload when the companion icon is there but the companion doesn't show up. for some reason I get this companion disappearing issue with Blackwall and Bull, but in Bull's defense I think he goes for a walk whenever I head upstairs to "visit" with Sera *wink *wink. Someone's a bit jealous that the only other Qunari in town is getting more action than he is

 

As for Blackwall, I haven't gotten to the point where your spoiler happens but he likes to disappear for me quite often. Not a big deal as he's my least favorite companion to talk to and use in a party. His voice is kinda droll and dry to me and his combat talk kinda blows ...it's not exciting to listen to, at least not when you've got to compare it to Bull and Cassandra. They both sound like they really enjoy the combat, he sounds like he's just there as another warm body. If there's any one companion I'd have to give up and have leave my inquisition he would be the first to go

He's gone for me, too. The character marker shows up but he's nowhere to be found, and I didn't see any note left from him (did find one form a stable boy though). Can still use him in battle, so maybe he's just glitched in Skyhold because I take him with me to find the Grey Warden stuff.

You get the note only after you've done both Here Lies the Abyss and Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts (and you can't pick him into your party then). Any other times it is just a glitch and he should return when you come back to Skyhold.
