I liked the Hissing Wastes as well. I seemed to like the desert maps the most, as Western Approach was also one of my favorites as well. I think they had more interesting quests, too. The Dwarven surface ruins was a really nice quest line, I wish they would have made a bigger deal about it, since that was a pretty monumental discovery. I do wish though, that they would put recommended levels on all the maps, because I ended up going to higher level maps for the challenge early on, and then finding maps that were too low level for me later. I made it to level 25 by end game.
So what is the point of the hissing wastes?

It gives you confirmed Superb weapon schematics for all classes for free except mage. You get Two-handed sword/one handed mace/dagger/bow tier 3 recipe for free (the blue superior ones) and their is a merchant who sells tier 3 armor. Also it is the only place where you can kill lurkers (Tier 3 leather with ranged resistance) and it has infinite and easy farm locations for intense fire essence (For master fire runes). Also there is a level 20 dragon here and lots of rifts which give you 600 influence each rift closed. All of those rifts give you some pure essences which you use in Superb runes.
In my second playthrough, I quickly did mainstory until I unlocked skyhold and then went straight for Hissing wastes, I had Tier 3 superb version weapons and armor at level 13 which made Nightmare mode much more easier.
So yes, its basically THE BEST region for top class armor and weapon.

It's a treasure trove of T3 dex and cunning crafting materials and there's a merchant there that sells great schematics. That's basically what I used it for.
Yeah, there are some great schematics there. Most of my end of game gear was crafted using those schematics. And there is a dragon necessary for the Dragon's Bane Achievement. If you are a dwarf, there's also the schematic for the best set of dwarf specific armor (Legion of the Dead heavy armor) there too.

Dwarven Lore and the only map where using your mount is required because it's a big ass open desert.
114 hours and I completed everything before doing the last story mission.
Post game you'll be down one companion (possibly two depending who got Divine) so as long as you can cope without them do whatever you like.
If you go talk to Cassandra post game she asks to rejoin the party, does Vivienne not?
It sucks that you always loose Solas though, makes me feel like there was meant to be a post game quest to find Solas (Witch Hunt 2.0?).

Some of the most powerful items is in that area. A dragon. Dwarven tomb. A dog merchant (I don't get this one). Strongass fade rifts.

You can pretty much bet that it will come as either DLC or an actual expansion. Considering his significance, I'd assume a true expansion like Awakening.
As for Hissing Wastes, yes, it's mainly meant to get you armor/weapon schematics.

And if you get missing people in Skyhold, it's just cause they aren't loading properly. Just save your game and reload it (or travel in/out.) They're there. You're supposed to be able to do mostly everything post-game (as well as future DLCs probably.)

The thing that struck me about Hissing Wastes after having seen half of the map was that Bioware were probably running out of budget when they had to make it. It's so barren and design-less. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually cut entire areas they had planned originally out of the game.

This is exactly what I thought too. There's lots of hunters and stuff, that have no dialog.. almost like they were supposed to be for something, but they didn't finish it [yet.] That vanishing woman seems like there was supposed to be a lot more to her too, yet it ended very abruptly the last time you meet her.
I'm also thinking that their future DLC's might be geared more towards post-game (or higher level content)... rather than "stick it anywhere", like other Bioware DLC.

After I finished the game the first time I could still craft. Though I more used the Wastes prior to that. Have you tried fast traveling to a zone then coming back to Skyhold. So I should go there to get schematics that I can't craft to fight enemies I don't need them against? hmmm

yep, didnt have to use mounts till the hissing wastes.... by which time i realized that there was really no point to them at all. Anyway, there's actually only 3 places that you have to unlock to progress the story, Val Royeaux, the hinterlands, and the western approach. the rest are completely optional, but you will have to unlock some to get necessary power... still nothing main story related to those other areas though... big disappointment in that department. But anyway, liked the dwarf quest for hissing wastes... didnt like that dwarf warrior gated armor though, same with other race + class gated armors. Other than that, i unlocked it for the dog merchant and crafting materials...

You're there to investigate and disrupt Venatori activity, because you want them to get weaker rather than stronger. You're also there to close fade rifts, because you're kind of the only person who can do that, i.e. the premise of the game.
If you want to dig any deeper for a justification than that, you're in trouble, because you'll start raising questions about "the point" of most (or all) sandbox areas in the game. What is "the point" of any area in an open world game? Compared to something like Skyrim, there's way more of a "point" to controlling certain areas in Inquisition in terms of the main plot, so I don't see what the issue is here.

It did this to me on xbox one I traveled to a keep and came back and all of it was fixed.
Same thing happened to me on pc. What I did was I exited the game and came back. Then all the crafting stuff was back where it was. It seems that reloading Skyhold, however you choose to do it, fixes the problem.

I love it. Biggest zone in the game innit. What's the deal with that spooky teleporting lady though? She freaks me out. Is it a quest?
if you talk to that lady 4-5 times she gives you a bow, a nice purple bow.

The Hissing Wastes... phew, that map is enormous. If I'm not mistaken it is the biggest sandbox of the game.
I only disliked the fact that it's night time, but generally-speaking it's a nice zone. I like the canyon part and the big Venatori camp area. I also liked the Dwarven ruins side quest and lore behind it. If I recall correctly those ruins date back from before the First Blight (can't remember most of the details behind that lore of that region but it's a fun read). The Dwarven ruins puzzles were alright (on the easy side though, nothing difficult, just need basic reading comprehension, light the Veilfires in order and voila, get your loot).
There's a bunch of notes scattered in the map that you can collect, there's about a dozen or so of them, from the Dwarf researcher I think, he explains stuff regarding the ruins. It's a nice place but I would have preferred if it had day time (or dusk, or dawn at least). I'm not a big fan of night time in big sandbox games. It did fit very well with Fallow Mire and I did not mind at all for Crestwood (prior to when it changes to day time), but for Hissing Wastes... nah, I would have preferred day time there.

I quite enjoyed Hissing wastes actually. Its not important no, but the quests are enjoyable. As for the "quests too spread apart" well... its a desert... You cant expect to have interesting stuff at every other sand hill. But there are still plenty to do.
Also, is it me, or the tomb quest introduces us to the Dwarf House from where Sandal might be? After all, this house was the one that invented runes and enchantments.

Maker's balls! I never thought of that.
That's... ok I'll have to read everything again next time I go in Wastes in my second playthrough.
