From all (crappy)side quests in the game i liked tomb riding and discovering history of dwarven thaig the most, just climbing on the highest dune and looking for picture from the map. That was actually cool.
So what is the point of the hissing wastes?

I completed hissing wastes. I swear 80% of the gameplay there for me was just running with wind howling. The only thing lacked was tumbleweed. I dont get why budget gets spent on stuff like this while the rest of the game ends up with cut content or feeling incomplete in several areas.

Maker's balls! I never thought of that.
That's... ok I'll have to read everything again next time I go in Wastes in my second playthrough.
Well here's a summary - Fairel invented the runes and enchantments. They turned him into a Paragon. As you can imagine, for the dwarves who can not use magic, the invention of runes and enchantments was like mind-blowing for them. Unfortunatly, and the codex entries dont explain why, who or how, the dwarves started using runes (i assume they are talking about the rune bombs) to fight against each other. And Fairel seeing what his invention was being used for, decided to leave with his whole house into the deep roads. After sometime roaming, they ended up on the surface and the entire house stayed on the Hissing Wastes (desert place, no people should pass around to see the scandal of a dwarven house living on the surface, and a Paragon no less). And thats why you find all those ruins made by dwarves in the surface. If you take Varric with you while doing this, he has quite a few lines to say in each tomb/ruin you go to while doing the puzzle.
As for Sandal its just speculation, but him being a savant, never been taught how to do it runes, and still do it better than any other person... he might as well be a descendant of Fairel's house.

I actually really liked the Hissing Wastes, even if it made me over-leveled. I probably did too many sidequests, the party ended up being level 23 or 24 by the end I think.
Pros:
- Its frikkin huge. Seriously, you get those Skyrim-like moments when you look across the world and think "Wow, I just came a long way. This place is huge. Lets go."
- Rifts.
- A dragon.
- A desert environment, a true one. Western Approach had lots of cliffs and canyons, Hissing Wastes is just desert with rolling dunes and those huge pillar things. Cool.
- A "merchant" sells some very helpful schematics. Vivienne looks awesome with tier 3 arms. Also, the shop is ran by a dog ![]()
- I had lots of banter here; some zones give me nothing, this zone gave me regular banter.
Cons:
- No real story here, at least nothing that got my attention. Something about the Tomb of Fairel, and the venatori were here for some reason. Stuff.
- The quests are all rather boring, nothing unique. The same can be said of many other zones though. There was tomb puzzle though, but it was way too easy.

Definitely one of my favourite areas in the game. True, it's rather empty in places, but I actually rather liked that - it created a nice contrast to some of the denser areas. Plus, given how most fantasy RPGs avoid deserts in favour of forests and mountains, I simply adore the change of scenery.
Seeing classic Dwarven architecture half buried in the sand was definitely one of my aesthetic highlights of the game.

I love the Hissing Wastes and this is coming from someone who hates deserts. I usually find them bland and boring, but the Hissing Wastes is gorgeous with that huge ass moon and stars on the sky, not to mention that ambient song.

It gives you confirmed Superb weapon schematics for all classes for free except mage. You get Two-handed sword/one handed mace/dagger/bow tier 3 recipe for free (the blue superior ones) and their is a merchant who sells tier 3 armor. Also it is the only place where you can kill lurkers (Tier 3 leather with ranged resistance) and it has infinite and easy farm locations for intense fire essence (For master fire runes). Also there is a level 20 dragon here and lots of rifts which give you 600 influence each rift closed. All of those rifts give you some pure essences which you use in Superb runes.
In my second playthrough, I quickly did mainstory until I unlocked skyhold and then went straight for Hissing wastes, I had Tier 3 superb version weapons and armor at level 13 which made Nightmare mode much more easier.
So yes, its basically THE BEST region for top class armor and weapon.
are those schematics just from the tombs?

it´s literal... waste
they could do more with less, just to put together all 3 of the deser locations and focus on creating new plot/locations instead.

Such great atmosphere. Chasing the Vints around on a treasure hunt. That moon.

The Hissing Wastes give you the best merchant in the game and also the easiest Dragon fight (and I mean pathetically easy).
Other than those two things, it is mostly filling. Basically a large area to farm for quality loot/crafting material.

It a place for the high tier mats for crafting stuff. Also if you can located the Merchant in Hissing Waste he will sell the Master Craft Battlemaster Armor Schematic which is the armor you see the Inquisitor Warrior wear in the trailers.
You will need "The Short List" perk for the merchent there to sell the Mastercraft Battlemaster Armor Schematic in Hissing Waste.
The Place is basically the endgame zone for getting the best gears and mats to craft the best stuff.
As for why they allow us to continue playing after the ending well I heard rumors that DLC storylines will be a continuation of DAI Storyline where the current ending left off which may require players to first complete current storyline before they can access the DLC storyline so DLCs may serve as expansions but those are just rumors for now.

I love this map great atmosphere, sense of exploration and good loot to boot as well. By far my favourite map in the game. The map i hated most has to be emprise du lion, too bloody crowded.

I explored a bit there before I beat the game and it's beautiful. I'm still salty over not being able to re-use my inquisitor for a new game so I haven't picked it up since I beat it lol.

Discovering the dwarven tombs made it the area worthwhile for me personally not to mention there is a dragon :-)

Well there is a bit of dwarfen lore, the best warrior armour plans (legion of the dead) in the game which is useless unless you have a dwarf warrior Inquisitor, a dragon fight and the best merchant for high level weapons and armour plans.
You can I suppose also grind out a few levels by doing the puzzles wrong and getting the demon enemies repeatedly.

The Hissing Wastes are a great place for would be archeologist. You're venturing into ancient dwarven tombs, solving a few riddles. Its an extremely beautiful, moody location. I had a real hoot going there.
But I could tell from the size of it and the amounts of travel that it wouldn't be for everyone. Thankfully, bioware still gives stuff to do for those who don't have attention disorders and like to actually solve puzzles. This age of map icons and breadcrumbs has become ridiculous. So much handholding.

I think a very important thing was missed in the Wastes.
The ruins of the thaig there predate the first Blight....there was a large opportunity for a huge history lesson somewhere in there, but it was missed.
I did piece together the entire mosaic for that region too and the story my dwarven mosaic attendant handed me was pretty much objective garbage.

That dragon though. I think a lot of people were like: "I want to see how close I can get to it." with that resulting in them being eaten alive. It sure happened to me.
Never tickle a sleeping dragon.
Thank you, Hogwarts.
