They've been doing it since it first appeared in Baldur's Gate 2 so I'm under no illusions about it, but BioWare has been getting progressively worse about it since Mass Effect 1. It really is annoying.

I certainly can't say you're wrong about that. The romances have become much more of a heavy focus.

@Fidite

They always manage to come up with some BS reason as to why that doesn't apply in that case. Usually they'll say something really stupid and follow it up with "that's just reality"

I just find it weird how many people on either side of the debate seem so fixated on this, when it is, all things considered, pretty insignificant. You'd think from some people's comments it's essentially Boning Age: Gayquisition, but I'm actually a good 20 hours into DA:I and I don't think I've run across a single reference to any character's sexuality yet. Maybe it's because half my companions seem to hate me and so don't want to talk to me about it.

It's worth mentioning some companies actually seem to go out of their way to feature a "diverse" cast and content in their games which often comes off as very forced in practice. That can also seem like pandering.

I will give BioWare credit for stepping away from their player sexual stance though. Was a step in the right direction. If people want to cry about it, then play a dating sim.

I just wish BioWare would divorce their romances from fanservice and actually write them in a way that's not pandering to tumblr-level shippers. Whether they're gay or straight, BioWare is pandering to degenerates who merely see the game as a backdrop to 'Riding The Bull'. It's all the same.

But at this point, that kind of suggestion is as extremist as 'BioWare should have better quest design' and 'BioWare ought to focus on having good RPG gameplay'.

I just wish they would divorce their romances from their games. Period.

Seriously, it's the source of either serious amounts of butthurt and/or creepy obsession fetishes. Just cut it out entirely.

It'll never happen, but that's what I'd prefer. The concept of getting to know people intimately through conversation has plenty of rich opportunity, but from my experience the amount of BioWare romantic options worth taking are overwhelmed by ones that boil down to "Oh you like me like me?" sorts of banter just doesn't grab me. There are great BioWare romances, but it seems like an... "inefficient" use of resources.

For Gay Romances as pandering, I could argue that the Class Type & Races being all-too-evenly balanced could be considered pandering. Damned if they do, damned if they don't? I can't read the developers' minds, and it is kind of overthinking the subject. DA:I's current M/M and F/F companions don't feel tacked on. I've only tried one of the many romances so I can't speak for it's quality as a whole yet.

So I watched AJ's review of inquisition. Lots of weird scenes...

lol @ android style buying stuff like Iron with actual $ in Inquisition

But at the end it got  8/10 because gameplay was kinda frustrating. BIOWARE WHY YOU DID THIS? WHY DID YOU SPEND SO MUCH TIME ON ROMANCES YOU FORGOT ABOUT PC GAMERS?

Here I thought the PC control scheme was bad because it's basically a console port, but no, it was the romances all along.

Reminds me of a while back someone was asking Bioware to put on an option to toggle the gay characters on or off.. Lmao sometimes it's just so stupid you have to laugh (even though it's really just kind of sad tbh)
I'm of the mindset of lovin for all!

I think that was the infamous Russian interview for Dragon Age Inquisition. Another memorable moment was when the interviewer's phone went off. Cameron was the one being interviewed, I think? He handled it pretty well. After the phone rang he put his hand under his jacket... thought he was going to pull a gun on them! lol
But you know when they can sit through that Bioware can handle it.

Truth be told the only game I've played that I can think of where LGBT characters didn't feel out of place is DA:O. They seemed like part of the environment and didn't stick out like a sore thumb, and when the characters talked about it it didn't feel contrived or just thrown in there for the hell of it. It was just who they are and what they do.

The only exception was in the Dead Trenches when Hespith is like "oh by the way, me and Branka are lovers" cueing some really poorly timed lewdness from Oghren and dissolving the tension in that scene, then not really following up on that making the mention of it at all kinda pointless and out of place.

As for DA:I, I'm not playing it but that whole Ride the Bull thing... ugh. That is just terrible. In fact all of the romance scenes I've seen on YouTube are cheesy as hell. If they can't do better than that then they really should just cut out the romance crap altogether.

You know... that's something that has really irked me.

Imagine if Bioware had endorsed a campaign like that for one of the female characters of their games.

"Leliana prays on her knees..."
"Steal Isabella's booty..."
"Have Josephine scribble your quill..."

These would have been in incredibly poor taste, been frowned on by Bioware and would have been (appropriately) labeled as crude, disgusting and blatant sexism. But because it's a guy... it's funny, I guess?

The same thing with the Bioware Twitter account re-tweeting a picture of a shirtless Cullen on a horse with the text "Unnnnnhhbhhhhh." If that was a Tweet of the infamous Mass Effect Miranda... "pose" shall we say... with a similar caption, it would have been ripped apart by people for being blatant exploitation of women. But because it's a shirtless Cullen, girls (or guys) are allowed to treat it as a sexual object that is totally fine to oogle and drool over.

More reason, to me, they should just cut that cord. It's clear to everyone the reason why they do these romances isn't for storytelling, but for blatant sex appeal fantasy service.

Don't stress it. Just tell them their opinion is one that you don't agree with and move on.

You'll go crazy if you try to rationalize why people do certain things?

I'm not trying to start an argument, I just wanted to know why people think that whenever a gay character is put in a game, it's "pandering" or that Bioware has an "agenda"? And then there's people who say gays want the attention or "the special treatment", and that they don't see why blacks and other minorities aren't represented but gays are. Why?

It's easy to put two and two together when you take into account real life demographics of LGBT(3.5% of the population give or take) and Bioware's history of catering to a very vocal minority of yuri/yaoi enthusiasts(whom love to use transparent SJW arguments) with things such as DA2's playersexual rubbish and Kaidan being made bisexual in ME3.

That's why you don't hear such ruckus over gay characters in other titles such as New Vegas, Witcher 2, Persona 4,etc. Said characters in those titles aren't overrepresented or added to satisfy the base whims of sexual deviants.

I do like the idea of romances but as you say the quality just isn't there for the amount of resources used. Obviously I'd prefer they do a better job with them however unlikely that may be. But if they are going to continue as they are then yes I agree it would be best to remove them entirely.
