You're at Alexius at lvl8? Did you rush? O.o
Always prolong main quests as long as humanly possible on NM. Make sure gear is up to par, upgrade regen pots and resistance pots.

That's why it's called nightmare. It's supposed to be next to impossible to challenge those who want the challenge.

Alexius is easy. The Venatori that attacks you with an unleveled Dorian is a pain. Should have went into that one a little stronger though. Wait till you fight the Highland Ravager. That lady had me raging after dying numerous times within the grasp of victory.'
And stick with the mage. Knight Enchanter will be worth all of the frustration you're going through. And use Dispel. And give all your mages Barrier or Revive. Those are my suggestions.

Mages are amazing, they're just late bloomers. Also they bring alot more than just damage to a party.
Also complaining that the hardest difficulty(called "Nightmare" of all things) is hard is abit silly don't you think? It's supousedto be hard, if it's too hard you're not good enough at building your party or using tactics.

But how do i get stronger?? I cant do the rifts cuz its too hard, i did literally every sidequests on Hinterland and Storm Coast. I refuse to do the Fallow cuz thats way to hard.
Dispel. Rifts are easy with a party of 2-4 mages with Dispel. When the Rifts start spawning demons from the green circles throw Dispel on them. You can usually kill two demons in one casting. If you have a couple of mages dropping those green circles you'll be left with two demons on the second wave.

Plus ive been trying to do the whole begineers thingy to get to Skyhold. I really want that Knight Enchanter.
So have 3 mage and 1 warrior and use Dispel on all rifts??

This. I think I was level 11 or 12 at that point, and had a number of rare pieces of armor and weapons. Grind out all those side missions first.
Also, remember that a mage with "Dispel" can shut down the rift portals before they spawn demons. Once I learned this, I was able to get past some of the tougher rifts. Just cast it near a couple of portals, and those two are instakills.

I cant even get past Alexius and im a level 8 Mage. I played on Normal got through just fine with my Sword/Shield Warrior but yet Mage sucks. What the hell. Plus i cant even do a Rift cuz of all types of Demons are far too OP.
During battle with Alexius taunt him with your tank and put on Shield Wall (continue to control the tank manually, so he/she actually keeps the Shield Wall up and doesn't attack) and order the rest to attack Alexius. Shield Wall will deflect all of his spells, so he can't harm you and you won't waste potions. During the Rift phase of the fight, remember to run away with your main character (Fade Step?) and get every enemy on your tank so you can disrupt the Rift - stops attacks, deals damage and sets up combos. Remember to eliminate enemies like that:
Terror>Wraith>Shade>Rage Demon (if there is one).
As to hardness, I play only Nightmare, and from what I have seen from a let's player doing this on Hard, Nightmare is far, far worse than Hard.

It doesn't do damage. It's a debuff. It makes your enemies easier to kill. Gets rid of enemy barriers, cures your party from burning/chilled/poison, kills demons before they come out of the Rift. A very useful tool for Nightmare.

thats exactly the problem, highest difficulty is meant to use everything you got perfect
it is recommended you switch your team for your tasks (fe 2 mages for rift hunting), its recommended to use the right damage types and use the right resistances for your equip for tasks. hell its NIGHTMARE!!

I have literally just killed Alexius on nightmare with FF on, at level 8. Cass, Dorian, Sera and myself as a 2 hand war. Simply aggro him with Cass then place her behind a pillar. He will constantly attack her with spells and his mines, so keep Shield Wall up. Use Dorian and Sera to range him down, plus I used my inquisitor for some extra dps by moving back around his mines.
Get Dorian to Dispel his barriers then use all your dps abilities.
As for the Rifts, just do what Jester suggests. Its a slow fight (I love micro'ing - with FF on I think you cannot play without tac-cam), you really should be able to kill him.

I went in there at level 8 at was very disappointed at how easy it was since it was a level 4-7 quest.
But yeah, s&s warrior taunt all day. and 2 mages for near infinite barrier, and of course dispel. 3 mages would be ultra kill with 3x barrier and 3x dispel.
Oh yeah I just had a flashback. Warriors in the early going are squishy too, so if taunt and tank doesn't work with him do taunt and kite and just use the 3 ranged to take everyone one with focus fire. Armor is the most powerful thing you will have for averting damage, so make sure the tank has good a good one before big fights like this one.
You dispel the monsters before they have fully materialized. Aim to hit 2-3 at once with each dispel. You literally might have to fight 0 demons with 3 mages, or 2 demons with 2 mages. That's not hard.
