What exactly is the point in having fixed level uniques?

Since uniques are a fixed level, what is the point in even having the lower level ones? I have 4 uniques that are just dust collectors because they are all level 15 and therefore outclassed by commons at a higher level. It would make more sense if these were a minimum level 20 or even have a tiering system (commons level 1-15, Rares 16-20 and uniques 20+). But nope. Level 20 common beats level 15 uniques.

I just look at the rarity as a way of determining salvage instead of it determining how effective the weapon is, which I equate to level. This usually helps me make sense of biowares weird system.

It really is just an odd system. I cant really find any reason for it to exist. If I wanted to buy chests with platinum, this would just turn me off it, knowing I could roll a unique but have it be completely useless.

The current system is simple. Low level uniques exist because you are supposed to get them as you progress through SP and slowly get better and better items. By using the same items in MP with a completely RNG loot system, they serve to troll us.

Yep, I believe they just threw in all the SP uniques and called it a day. Possibly excluded the super OP ones.

This is probably the best explaination. Sheer laziness on biowares part methinks.

to make you feel special for getting them at first, then to enrage you into buying platinum when you realize your unique wasnt unique enough

I got my first unique bow yesterday Rank 9 I would have been okay with that, if the chest before hadn't dropped a rank 23 common bow that does twice as much damage.

Personally I'd love to see the level system removed entirely and replaced with a tier system just like armor.  Tier 1 is common, Tier 2 is rare and Tier 3 is unique.  This would also allow Bioware to balance weapons without having to progressively scale them from 1-23.  Bioware could then make all unique items comparable to one another and force some difficult decisions for the players instead of strictly comparing DPS.  For now, the weapon system is just a huge mess in DAMP so something (anything) needs to be done to improve it.

I came here to post exactly this.  Its pretty clear that they just copied some of the loot from single player (where it takes MUCH longer to level up, therefor making a level 8 unique extremely viable for quite a while) but didn't take into account the levelling system and RNG of the MP.  Again, another prime example of how the MP was rushed with what seems like barely any playtesting or QA.

Because of the way the loot system works now, 90% of the people who own this will never use it for fighting.
