So my 1st playthrough was with reaver on normal dif, and I it was way too easy, honestly, and got pretty boring.
So ive finished it (to watch the story) and decided to start a new playthrough, this time on nightmare.
Im running with:
- myself as a mage with right side of spirit for greater barriers (combo with chaotic focus) and fire.
- solas with left side of spirit for dispell, winters grasp and the right side of lightning.
- blackwall as a tank
- varric (will be replaced for cole for the assassin spec)
so far im pretty happy, its hard but not impossible and I just struggled rly hard in the assault to haven (damn those templars on the last trabuchet).
Now I got to skyhold (lvl 9) and I can grab my spec, I want my (main char) role to be nuker/CC and solas to be the boring mage (CC, dispell, barrier on cd etc)
So can you point me to a solid build for a mage nuker? Im thinking full rift tree + fire to get improved Fire mine and just 1 point in spirit for barrier and the rest on lightning, that seems to me to be the most damaging build while still grabbing cc from rift tree.
thank you in advance.
ps: can you pls point me to a fifteen(ish) build or something? i dont want a build that starts working only past lvl 18 or something, thats too late for me to enjoy the game..
Help with mage build on nightmare difficulty. (no KE pls)

Ok so I found this on the forum:

IMO, there are two "key" passive abilities for an ideal Rift Mage build.
Restorative Veil, from the Rift Mage Tree <- your most important passive, the key to infinite mana. to use it properly, you must weaken enemies.
Clean Burn, from the Fire Tree <- 1 second cooldown reduction on all spells gets nice real fast, especially when you have infinite mana
So, the key is to Weaken enemies using your Rift Mage actives, then unload on them with fast-cast (aoe!) damage (to recharge mana), then weaken them again, then more damage...
14 talent points:
Veilstrike, Restorative Veil, Smothering Veil, Pull of the Abyss**, Stonefist**, (7)
Immolate**, Flashpoint, Clean Burn (4)
Chain Lightning** (2)
Barrier (1)
15th Talent point: Respec to Twisting/Encircling Veil instead of Smothering
16th Talent point: Upgrade Veilstrike
17th Talent point: Get Smothering Veil if FF is off, imo ignore if on
17+: Your call. I'd build towards a fully upgraded Fire Mine because it combines so well with PutA.
I built Solas this way and he's been pretty monstrous. I can only imagine how nasty he'll be with Fire Mine - I've currently got Fire Mine on my Mage Inquisitor and it's pretty nasty just following up AI-controlled Solas's PutA's (protip: if you're not gonna micro him, set Veilstrike/PutA to preferred tactics). Protip 2: If playing with FF off, enjoy the synergy with a 2-handed warrior. It gets silly FAST."
I think im going with it, but any advice will still be appreciated.

Jk here's my Rift mage build. The main problem is that it currently takes 29 points, which is WAY TOO MUCH. Need to cut it down by like 3 points or so.
- Abilities: (28/29 points in total)
- Everything in Rift Mage tree. (11 points)
- Inferno Tree: (7 points)
- Immolate(2)
- Flashpoint
- Pyromancer
- Fire Mine(2)
- Clean Burn
- Spirit Tree: (3 points)
- Barrier(1)
- Peaceful Aura
- Guardian Spirit
- Winter Tree: (6 point)
- Fade Step(1)
- Winter Stillness
- Ice Mine/Wall of Ice(1)
- Ice Armor
- Blizzard(2)
- Storm Tree: (2 points)
- Energy Barrage(1)
- Conductive Current
- Hotbar:
- Veilstrike
- Stone Fist
- [Focus Skill]
- Pull of the Abyss
- Fade Step
- Fire Mine
- Blizzard
- Energy Barrage
- Get +5 guard on hit, and Hidden Blades on hit. Maybe get 1% health heal on hit.
- If we get 1% health on hit, then we might be able to play close combat, under the cover of Blizzard. This will give us Ice armor, and continuous health regen.
- Possibly don’t get [Static Charge] and [Static Cage]. Instead go down Winter tree through Ice Mine or Ice Wall to get upgraded Blizzard. It might be possible to keep Blizzard continuously up, due Rift Mage mana regen.
- Is it possible to use Static Cage or Chain Lightning with the weakness rebuff from Rift Mage tree to proc sleep status? And then to use Dispel from Spirit tree to perform a Nightmare cross-class combo?
