I must admit the black emporium creator had more light then the staring one, I made a cool character which I probably would've skipped, and I used the long parted right hairstyle

I honestly don't think hair should be an issue in a game that forces you to take the role of a customised character, that much seems obvious. And as much as practicality is thrown out as the counter-argument, or clipping, the thing is neither of those explain the shockingly poor quality of the hairstyles that are provided in contrast to the clear difference afforded to the other characters in the story.
The solution has been provided by fans of the series several times, with diminishing returns, from entirely new hairstyles, to improving the current ones, to simply re-routing access to the hairstyles NPC customisation has access to, each requiring less effort on Bioware's part.
Right now, I agree with Miss Netra in saying that: in future, I will be doing much more research before I make any more purchases of Bioware games, as this leap of pre-order faith has definitely not been a positive experience. I most certainly would not have bought this game, had I known that every customisable element in this installation would be quite so disappointing.
Yeah. At least for the PJs there is a "probably no". Not a satisfating anwer, since there is no explanation on why they can't let use use our armour (or even only some kind of armour, if some are sooo bad) or even a chance to change its colour. (since we already color it when coloring certain armour)
But for the hair nothing. No answer, no explanation. Nothing. not even the sign that they know peopl don't like the mayority of the styles, and are still looking at the model THEY have released time ago to understand what happened to those hairstyles.
Of course the answer we want is "Here! We've worked hard all these months to give you the hairstyles you want, and they're free!"
But even an unsatisfying answer is better than complete silence. Just tell us something.
The only answer I've seen was months ago, like 2 or 3 months before the launch when, I think, Laidlaw said that they know people are unhappy with the Qunari hairstyle options but they will launch with what they have and might look into it later. It's in the thread about Qunari hairstyles.
Since then, nothing. And that wasn't really an answer.
Once again, they bragged about the best CC ever, sorry Bioware but no. It could have been really great, most of it is the best I've seen, but the lack of even decent hairstyles just drags it down.

So a non-answer from month ago is the only thing BioWare said about the issue. Is way too little, I dare say. I would prefer some motivation and clear answars, but it seem to be impossibile to have those from BioWare form the time of ME3. ![]()
It's been long now. Many have already finished multiple run, and all the console players minus Xbox one don't even had the chance to play JoH. Too much time. And still no real anwer or explanation.
Can't say I like this situation at all.
Yeah I know, I am rather happy that I am in the middle of exams and have a broken hand, I cannot play right now, or for the next 2 ½ weeks.
I keep hoping that there will be some news, because I am on my fourth playthrough and I am already out of hairstyles I like.
Meaning I will have to repeat the same ones over and over unable to make truly unique characters.
That probably did not add much to the discussion, but we need this thread to keep going.

I'm sorry for you hand. I know is really an annoyance ^^ (and good luck for the exams!). I wanted to make a new run with a Qunari lady. But I'll have to leave it at that. I'm not going to have a completely bald head or one of the three equally horrible hairstyles on another of my characters. The horns are all great, but is a pain having to choose between the horns I like and the less terrible hairstyles.
The others characters I have given them hair, but I quite hate all of them.
I probably should have waited to comment & complain about the game play outside of my "initial" first run through of the game after purchasing it. I'd honestly thought Bioware removed the option for us to use certain keys we wanted for movement and attack methods in game, when the option to change them was under "Key Bindings" and not "Controls" Which also solved my issue about automatically attacking enemies because now I used the "Enter" key to do so.
That mistake is my fault. I'm actually really enjoying the game play a lot more after discovering where to change the key controls. The horses I love too
but Hairs are still extremely sucky though, so that fact still stands lol I surely hope something is in the works for this.
Thank you, it's healing quite nicely though
I was baking cookies and fell when I was going to take them out of the oven.. ![]()
Yeah Miss Netra I love the game, over all it's great. But the stupid bad things (like the diversity in hair) really drags it down, when it could have been such a great game. It could have been Dragon Age Origins 2.0

I love to bits DAI, but there are indeed some problems: hairstyles and eyebrows, Skyhold outfit, and lack of cinematics for the secondary missions or conversations. Those problems came out quite easily becouse the rest of the game is of very hight quality, so those probelms are like a black spot on a white dress. ![]()
It wasn't even cookies for me... ![]()
Yes exactly! The game could have been so great, truly the Game of the Year and the things that are not good seem so much worse in comparison to the rest of the game. It annoys me so much more than worse problems in lesser games. And a lot of these issues should have been avoidable.
And should at least be adressed.
I just hate that these things bother me when I just want to enjoy the game at its best. And in a RPG with the opportunity to create your own character, diversity in hairstyles is somewhat important. Or actually, really important.

What make me faceplam so much is that well... good hairstyles aren't really a new request (maybe from PC players is, since they usually just mod, and who-care-of-the-console-peasant-
) prior the game was out and the horrors revealed, there where a lot of request for good hairstyles. Is nothing new. But what we have, combined with the perpetual silence on the matter, make feel like BioWare don't care. ![]()
Yep new hairdos would be nice. Til then I will just throw my characters hair back in a pony tail.
Its the only hairdo i can stand.
Seriously. It's like every single inquisitor overslept and just threw their hair back in an elastic without even brushing it so they could get to class on time.
Kind of :/
And we are in Orlais, remember what Leliana tells you about hairstyles in Orlais in Origins?
Tall hairstyles, jewels, feathers, live birds!
I know that fashions change, but to go from really tall up do's with live birds in them (ok, the live birds was one noble trying to top the others, but still) to bald hairstyles, in 12 years? How do you impress each other with that.
"Oh I look the most like an old man."
"No my dear, I look the oldest and most hairless"
I'm still not play this game for 5 month but I bought DLC yesterday after seeing the progression...Bald make me forget about this game.
Just release DAO and DA2 hair for consoles plz. Hair and beards plz. I want the same hair and beards for my 8 hawkes. Pleeeeeeeeeze bioware. Animated hair would be great too. Is it possible that there will be a dlc with the warden? Id like to customize my wardens too. I spent about 3000 hours playing DA until now. And for the customization about 30 hours. So plz hear my call. I live in thedas. I know more about the history of thedas than i know about the real worlds history. Until now i wrote down every single codex-entries from DAO and DA2 , even the different entries wich are changing. (why not just copy them from the wiki? Cause the german wiki is incomplete.) mind if you can do me this little favor bioware? I would be very grateful. And so would be my hawkes: william ,brandon, tristan, nathan, marion, leonie, taja and catherine.
I can safely tell you that there will be no DLC with the Warden. There might never be a game with the Warden again because of the difficulties surrounding that character.
It is not a small favor to "just" release the hairstyles, if it was they would have. It is obvious that there are some issues with hair - I seriously doubt that they "chose" 8 bald hairstyles. I think it was a time thing. We can clearly see on Cassandra that they were able to create some nice short hair, we can see on Josephine and Morrigan that they were able to create some nice up do's and we can see on both Morrigan and Sera that animated hair was possible.
But somewhere down the line they had do stop and change/remove the hairstyles they were working on.
The big problem here is the total silence. We want the reasons why. We want to know if they are working on it. We just want to hear something about it.
I would have paid for The Black Emporium if it had included upgraded armor, the mirror and HAIR!
Appreciate that it was free ...but I would still pay $5 USD for a selection of female hair that wasn't 10 shades of bald.
I'd pay another $5 for an armor pack that included better "house clothes" than the beige spider monkey pajamas. Petty as it sounds, I haven't played since beating the game ...no DLC and no plans for purchasing an expansion pack either. Part of becoming someone different is looking different ...hard to do when you're always bald. Can't be a wicked redhead mage ...or ebony vixen ...if all you see is stubble. ![]()
Alright, so my understanding of why it's not possible to add NPC's (eg: Cullen, Leli, Josie, Calpernia etc) hair to the Quizzy is because you need the toolset to actually "add" options to the sliders options we currently have? And only "modifications" of the current existing meshes that are available for the Quizzy can be done?
So far the mods that I am looking that are available in the Nexus are mostly texture replacements, and the ones Adela are doing are pretty much tweaks to existing meshes (the ones she can't release are completely new meshes due to the lack of toolset). How much modifications can actually be done to the current meshes and make them usable in game?
So let's say is it possible to add braids from the "Natalie Dormer's hair" to Scout Harding's hair, then combine that mish mash as a single object and count it as the new Harding's hair? A lot of the non-new meshes DAO hairstyles were done with addition, subtraction and combination of the already available hairstyles (eg: tmp's tucker hair mod). While ME3 and DA2 are not released with the toolkit, people were able to use NPC's hair (eg: Ashley's, Aveline's, default F!Shep) to their PC by editing save files.
I think an explanation of these limitations will set a lot of "why can't x happen" questions can put the record straight (much, much appreciated to anyone who can explain this).
I know nothing of this, I wish I did, but I would like to know as well.
Here's a brief sum-up of what the modders know about the hair meshes and hair modding (with technical details kept to a minimum):
As is well known, Bioware hasn't released a tool set for either of the last two Dragon Age games. Through inhuman effort, two coders created a basic tool set that allows certain types of files to be exported, modified, and re-imported back into the game. However, it has been discovered through trial and error that the modifications have to be EXTREMELY limited in nature, or the game won't accept them back (it crashes the game). In previous games, it was possible to simply add meshes to the CC. In Frostbite, there is no known way to add meshes. Due to this, the modders are limited to the number of hairstyles in the game (and that doesn't include the bald/scalp styles). So that immediately limits the modders to about 16 slots they can play with. On top of that, the hair meshes must have the EXACT same number of vertices going in as were exported. If you are off by ONE vertex when re-importing a mesh, it will crash the game. If you delete and add a vertex, it will crash the game, because it has to be the ORIGINAL vertex.
It's a bit frustrating, to say the least.
On top of that, the NPC hairstyle (Cassandra, Josephine, &c) all have not only custom meshes, but also custom special FX layers (for instance, both Cass and Josie have highlights for their dark hair that the PC meshes don't have), and THOSE layers cannot at this time be exported/modified at all. Thus, the modders can't really change their hairstyles at all. And, because the vertices are different, they can't be simply applied to a PC mesh and re-imported.
That is why the hair mods are so limited at the moment: ONLY the PC hair meshes can be exported/re-imported, and ONLY with the original vertices (which, thankfully, can be moved around to make new hairstyles). However, since there are only 16 slots for human/elf/dwarf and four (yes, four) for Qunari, this REALLY limits the ability to mod hair.
The coders making the actual tools themselves are plonking away at Frostbite and the code, trying to figure out how to add new meshes or at least import new meshes into existing slots, but so far, it's been an uphill battle against a stubborn foe.
So, in other words: no, you can't put aspects of different styles together. The modding tools for DAI simply aren't at that level yet. The best modders can do at the moment is modify current meshes as best as they can and prey to the coder gods that a breakthrough is made vis a vis mesh import.
On the other hand, there are some awesome coders working on the tools, so hope does exist. And Adela, who figured out most of the limitations above, has some stunning meshes all ready to import once the tools ARE capable of doing so. It's just that, as was predicted, Frostbite is hard to mod. Of course, at one point, mods were thought impossible at all, so there's definitely hope.
On top of that, the hair meshes must have the EXACT same number of vertices going in as were exported. If you are off by ONE vertex when re-importing a mesh, it will crash the game. If you delete and add a vertex, it will crash the game, because it has to be the ORIGINAL vertex.
Thanks for the pretty detailed explanation tk!
That sentence alone is already enough to make most modellers cry in pain (seriously people, appreciate the efforts these modders have put in).
Absolutely!
I don't use mods. I am not a "computer geek" like my boyfriend ( and with that I mean: has any technical knowledge about computers
) and I get very uncomfortable when it comes to changing things around, I fear that I will destroy something..
And I have never liked the hairmods for game, a lot of them take the hair too far (in my opinion) and they just stand out so much from the rest of the game, super shiny, super long hair in a completely different texture... I don't like it and therefor I don't use it.
But that is me ![]()
It's obvious that a lot of work goes in to modding, especially this time around since the game and the engine is so mod-unfriendly.
I have the greatest respect for all the modders working hard out there right now, it's just a shame that they "have" to do it.
Honestly, this time the hairstyles we have are so terrible I might actually use a fanmade mod, for the very first time...
Honestly Bioware, that's how terrible you hairstyles are.
I'm just here updating the thread.

Same here. I'm not the one to use mods, but this game just begs me to use ones. Especially if I want to play Qunari lady. Either I'll hope for miracle and create a face that actually suits current hairstyles (pfff, I can dream), or use mods (I have my eyes on reverse mohawk one).
