I am currently playing my first playthrough on nightmare to get that PS4 trophy out of the way. I am currently about to start the "In your heart shall burn" operation.

 

The strategy guide states "If youre a completionist, don't select the in your heart shall burn operation until you've completed all quest and requisitions in Haven. This is a major turning point in the game - There is no turning back"

 

I have done all the side quests and requisitions for Haven, but wondered if I just beat the main story (do as many side quests as possible to level up) can I go back and clean up the hinterlands and other areas??? I have yet to face the dragon in the hinterlands but am I able to go back and slay the dragon after I beat the story? If I have trouble I could just knock down the difficulty but it wouldn't affect the trophy im going for since I would have technically already beat it.

If you complete the Haven quests and then continue the story, you should be able to go back to the Hinterlands, yes.

There is a lot more story after Haven so no need to worry about other zones, but yes you will not be able to return to Haven afterwards.
