So while playing inquistion i decided to get a gaming headset to enchance my experience. Mind you i used to hate and fear spiders when i was younger.
So first fight i get into in the hinterlands im loving the sounds and really getting into it.
Then ninja bears attack my party and im the only one left standing with 2 hit points of health and out of nowhere a spider from hell starts chasing me.
The worse thing is... With the headset i could hear the damn thing crawling like it really is behind me. And the damn hissing.
Yep arachnophobia reborn.
Antivan fire is your friend.

Thanks a lot. I'll avoid these areas as best as I can
Be advised that, either through a bug or by game design, spiders can literally drop on you or appear as if spawned directly in front / beside you.
I myself can't stand spiders myself, but there have been only a few games where I found them actually scary (Dark Messiah, gosh how I hated them). Thought I'd mention it, can't possibly know how one with actual fear react to something like that in the game.

You'll only have to avoid crestwood, the storm coast, the exalted plains and emerald graves and both of the western approach areas and the hidden oasis. All of which pop up in quick succession as soon as you've traveled to Orlais, which is just after Skyhold.
And several 'main quest' areas as well. Basically just pretend they're not spiders or you cant play this.

I still have my fingers crossed that someone will design a mod to change them into something less terrifying.
I don't know why they bother me so badly.

I screamed when the first one showed up.
Also there is one particular cave that has a huge wave of spiders. I can feel their shells go crunch crunch crunch as I mashed auto-attack and spirit blade frantically.

Unfortunately the game isn't as easily modable as DAO. Mass Effect (2, 3) had the texmod, which could find texture while they were being loaded and change them to something different, but I guess textures alone wont do.

I wonder if we will get the sliding bear mods ala skyrim, where one modder changed all spiders to bears, but they have almost no animation.
Nope ignore this bear sliding around with no sound. Ignore ignore.

Skyrim is probably among the most easily and extensively modable games on the market. Not comparable to DAI unfortunately. With the modding tools at hand it would be pretty easy (for someone who knows it of course) to fully replace the spiders with, for instance, wolves, including the correct animations, sounds etc. Webs and spider eggs could be removed from the level architecture of caves and other places. Spiders could be completely purged from the game.
This replacement mod with the floating bears is kinda lame (no offence and I bet it already helps those with fear of spiders) compared to what great mods are available for Skyrim. ^^ But...I'm drifting offtopic, sorry.

Never understood anyone being that afraid of videogame stuff... especially considering how dangerous you are within the game. Here you have the means and abilty to kill the thing you hate and you can't get hurt in return, good times.

The more advanced games get, the more realistic they can make certain things appear ingame. If one is terrified by spiders in real life, is it really so hard to understand that a realistically moddeled giant spider scares them in the game?

I am scared of heights, in games i basejump without a powerchute. Actually good example in DA, Skyholds lack of fall damages means i am flinging my self all kind of high places, its quicker than stairs.
So yea, like i said For me personally... it is hard to understand.

I am also scared of heights. To the point of dizziness and hyperventilation. But can also jump down from towers in Skyhold.
I think heights is a lot more situational. My posterior is still firmly in a chair.
Spiders though, are much more visual.
I hope some mod options will open up. It will be able to address a lot of player concerns.

When was the last time deep drop snuck up on you and surprised you in real life?
And how many ravines are there in your home? ![]()
You go out and see what you fear, you can avoid it. Or you can chose not to. You go back home and there is a spider in your room. Now what?
Plus there is the matter of actual 3D images. Try your fear of hights in a game that supports occulus rift and we talk again:

People afraid of heights usually are afraid of falling from heights. Something that you personally can't do by playing a video game.
My fear of spiders comes from the way they look, move, sound etc. Whether it's a spider in my house or a spider in a game, they behave the same way.

Remind me to never visit your area... because giant human sized spiders would be freaking crazy

The spiders do get pretty big here in Australia, thankfully nothing like they do in the games.
I'd have to move to Antarctica if they did.

I'm actually LOOKING for spiders and I'm having a hard time finding some. I need some giant spider glands for my dragon killing weapons.

This game probably has the most spiders in it I've ever seen and you can't avoid them. Not possible. My advice, play a ranged class and always send your group in first.

The mod that lets you zoom out Origins style should help a little bit

There are some right after you create your character, in fact.
After, they're spaced out. But you need to fight spiders in the main quest. And you see a truly gigantic one too.

Are there any indications that a spider is about to appear in the game?

Not really. There's a main quest where you have to start dealing with spiders about halfway through, for example.
