After you meet that certain someone at Skyhold, you can unlock a lot of places and main story missions (well three main story missions) but the thing is, you need a TON of power points, 8 to unlock areas ( I believe 3-4 new areas are available) 8 for one of the main missions with that "someone" and 20!!! to unlock what I assume is the main main mission.

Whats the best way to get said power points? I just don't know where to start.

Requesition quests in the hinterlands are infinitely repeatable. As are all those Requesition quests. Easy power points.
Doing quests in general will also net power points.

just explore the maps and finish quests, you will have more power as you can spend

I'm right before meeting you know who and I have 154 power points. Did all the available companion missions (excluding Cole, because it did not show up for me yet) and a lot of side missions. I figure I'll have enough.

I felt that way at first too, but you'll eventually earn power faster then you can spend. As others have said, requisitions, closing fade rifts and all side quests get you points pretty quickly.

Just...do stuff.  Really.  There are times when I think to myself, "Man, I really have too much Power," so I go to the war table just to dump it on whatever is available.

The collection quests your requisition officer gives you at camps. They are of type collect 20 iron and 10 dragonstone. Once you have the items, go to the requisition table and craft the quest item. They are repeatable and net you power. Don't rely too much on them as you won't get XP - meaning you might be underleveled for the new areas you unlock. It is generally better to gain power by doing quests.

You only need to do stuff, explore the zones, do side quests, etc. By doing that, you won't only get power, but also levels. It's because even if you can unlock the zone, you'll still need the minimum level requirement for that zone.

"Power! Unlimited power!"

- Darth Sidious - Revenge of the Sith

Now we know he was actually referring to the requisition quests in DAI.

There is literally a guy at Skyhold who sells power. (I think he arrives after Sera's personal quest?)

But other than that, it's so easy to get power by just exploring to open up camps and closing fade rifts. You'll be okay, I promise. :)

There is literally a guy at Skyhold who sells power.

More importantly, he sells influence, which you can use to get more perks.

He sells influence, I thought? Unless there are two vendors.

Anyway, I think unless you're actively trying to avoid getting power, you'll be fine. I'm swimming in it at the moment.

You get both power and influence.

I just killed my first dragon and got 5 power. Every landmark claimed grants power. Every camp grants power. Side quests grant power. Just do stuff.

This. Also, closing rifts gives like 2 power.

Saints Row respect bar anyone? maybe they might be overwhelming but closing rifts and doing requisitions is the easiest way to get those , most requisitions just require minning

Simple things like setting up camps and closing rifts  get you a lot of points once your camps are unlocked you can fast travel to one do close by quests and move to the other in similar fashion. I had 43 points when i got to Skyhold so there's enough there. If you take the time to make a plan on how to approach it you don't feel as overwhelmed.
