All dragons do not scale with level, so I suggest to kill them if you at their level or slightly above. Killing an Lvl12/13 dragon at Lvl20 its no more than an trash fight. You will miss almost any thrill from this rare events.

An complete list can be found here...

In one of the game's loading screen, it is said that you don't get any experience for killing creatures 3 levels or more below you.  So I'd say go now, don't wait any longer, and do all dragons equal or below you level, following the guide provided by Basheda.

Well... casual would imply the game being a joke. The mode is made for you to enjoy the story, not the difficulty of fighting the AI -- er, I mean fighting enemies.

Dragons can be painful on Nightmare. Though when you learn the tells, it becomes easy enough. As long as you can move in your ranged during the wing-flapping-AoE-thingymajiggle, your pretty much done.

20 is far too late to start?!?! your dragon killing.

I'm not even sure there are dragons higher than 20/21.

The highest one I killed was 23 I think. The last of the three in the snowy area whose name eludes me at the moment.

But yeah, OP should've been killing dragons for a while now. You never want to be more than 3 levels higher than them. On normal I found killing them at the same level easy. I'm on NM now though and haven't tried one yet.

I'm playing on Nightmare, and at level 14 I'm still having trouble with dragons.  There's the "Hunter" in Crestwood, but it hasn't gone well so far.  I'm even a KE, but still can't seem to get the knack of how to keep the party (or myself) alive long enough to finish.

The trick to the dragons as far as I can tell is, as was already said, to figure out their tells.

In my opinion the dragons with adds are significantly harder than those without as, unless you have an offtank of some sort, it can be extremely touch and go for your squishies when you get a couple dragonlings coming in from the side.

Aside from that, the biggest wipe factor is usually the wing beat. But those occur fairly regularly and once you get the hang of it you can prepare by bringing your ranged in closer so that they can move into the circle once it begins and take, at most, one tick of damage. I've found that the best way of dealing with this is to keep your ranged (usually I think its best to have two ranged and 2 melee including your KE if you are one) on either flank of the dragon and have them rotate as the dragon moves. This way you can keep them close enough to move in quickly, but out of the front of the dragon which will provoke his breath attacks (ranged or channeled). Paradoxically I think melee with good guard generation (not to mention a knight enchanter) is much safer in a dragon fight than ranged characters. The damage is manageable and consistent rather than super spikey.

The crestwood dragon has an additional element which is the electricity rings he puts on all of your party periodically. This is a good tell for when she will be doing a wing flap. Usually when this happens I immediately dispel the two melee characters with one spell to limit damage and then let the ranged characters be as they are already spread out. If the dragon wing flaps afterwards since your ranged are on opposite sides they should not provoke too much aoe friendly fire from the electricity.

Otherwise, regen potions and healing mist are your friend. Wing flap is paradoxically a good time to group heal with healing mist grenades and regen is a much better option than full potions as the later are necessary in those inevitable moments when you make a mistake and your ranged characters take a breath attack to the face. I also find that Bees is a great bit of added dps if you are struggling.

Finally, each dragon has a predictable elemental weakness, so take advantage of that with your mages and you'll see a much faster downspeed.

Anyway hope that helps. I wiped like 8 times on the Frostback on hard the first time I tried, but 5 or 6 dragons later I find them more or less straightforward even on nightmare.

Dragons don't count as mobs for xp gains. They seem to count more as quests (fixed xp gain). I killed a dragon 5 levels under me and still got a couple thousand xp for it.

I fought dragons from around level 11.

The only one I haven't killed yet is the Higland Ravager in Emorise du Lion. He one mean motherf*cker I tell you. A level 23 dragon. I tried taking him out yestaerday on level 18/19 but I lost. I'll just wait a bit and let him sleep until I reach a higher level.
