I just played through the Mage story line on Hard with a  bowwoman and I think the Templar storyline is better even though I played it on Casual.

Or is that game design or whatever.  What do you think?

Templar story is far better. The way cole is introduced makes much more sense in this storyline, and they actually have a decent leader. Fiona is the main reason I hate picking mages. I would have loved for Irving to come back and be the rational replacement if he yet lived.

I found it to be the complete opposite.  So much more thought and effort seemed to have been placed into the mage storyline.  Going into the future.  Seeing Alistair and/or Anora.  Having an actual urgent reason to go to them first.  I mean that about the reason.  With the mages, you learn that they allied with Tevinter and that the world is being placed in danger due to time magic.

What reason do you have to investigate the templars first?  They punched a priest and left town.  Woo!

Even your advisors don't have any reason to think the templars are in danger.  You go there for a diplomatic meeting.  What Inquisitor would really look at the two situations and think, gee, let's ignore all of the evidence of danger at Redcliffe Castle and go have a party with the Templars?

I'm all in for role-playing but since I knew that I could only choose one of them to help my Inquisition I decided to go with the Templars.

I would have picked templars, but that dude that knocked out that old woman was painful.

I'm no sjw, but I couldn't side with a nutcase like that.

Mages have a better story and the glimpse into the future is dark and brooding. Also seeing your companions roles and the cutscenes was a gripping experience. Templars was just as good i don't think i'll pick it again for a while though.

I can answer that. I played a Dalish Rogue and I preferred siding with the Mages over the Templars. In the end I sided with the Templars because it looked like a free win and was far less dangerous than infiltrating Redcliffe Castle.

I played both as well i think the mage storyline was better written , Alexius is more interesting than the envy demon and the whole sending you to the future was a nice touch , that scene with leliana holding the venatori back while dorian cast the spell to undo Alexius's time spell was chilling.

Same watching his companions and leliana die in that future was a huge role playing moment for my dwarf. Since he was a bit of a coward so to speak and wished he could be a hero like the paragons, hero of fereldan(my mage) and Hawke etc. Instead of a criminal a thug a hired brute and smuggler.

He learned what it means to actually be a hero and how far his companions are willing to go that event will always be with him because for them that world was "real" that was their future and he will do everything he can to honor their sacrifice.

I had Varric and Cassandra with me seeing them infected with red lyrium and seeing Solas reduced to a chanting mess/Fiona turning into lyrium were excellent touches.

I like the Templar storyline better and feel like it is the intelligent in-game choice. I'm sure my current play-through, in which I've sided with the mages, will end up reasonably well. The Templars seem the far more sensible choice, in my opinion, from an in-game perspective.

Both sides have made mistakes, and both sides are largely vilified on the basis of the actions of a small minority of their members. All that said, the risks posed by so many suddenly unsupervised circle mages, at a time in which there is a tear in the Veil... too big a risk, most would say. I appreciate that the majority of the game's NPCs have said as much to me, even while commending me for giving the mages a chance.

Gameplay and story wise, I prefer the Templar mission. The time manipulation magic was a can of worms I'd rather not have had introduced into Thedas. I hope this is the last time we see it.

In terms of meta, I personally went with the Templars on my first run on account of not really liking the dialogue options for recruiting the mages. One makes it sound like they've done absolutely nothing wrong and are worthy comrades to have, and the other "you're our prisoners" dialogue makes it seem as though you're perpetuating the very thing in which they rebelled from and overall makes the Inquisitor come off as a bit of a jerk. Atleast with the Templars, both dialogue options admit to the faults of what went down with the group albeit leaning towards favoring or not favoring them otherwise.

Other than that little personal gripe though, they're both wonderful storylines. Alexius' battle theme is one of my favorites in the game.

I thought the Mage quest was better, but the Templar payoff best. Calpurnia was so much more compelling than Samson, and I think I got a better picture of Corypheus through her and the quests associated with it.

In my first playthrough, I did the templar route, and it was fun.

In my second playthrough I took the mage route. I couldn't believe how much more I enjoyed it compared with the templar quest. Going to the future and seeing exactly what's at stake was amazing.  Also Corypheus seemed quite a bit more angry about having his mages taken away than he did the templars. :P

However, I agree with several here about Cole. It made much more sense in the templar storyline.

Other than the Cole intro, I much preferred the mages. I enjoyed both, and will, in the future, probably flip a coin for which one I pick right I after I flip it for which gender I'll be playing. The impact, however, of what happens if you're not there is very much apparent in the mage story, and puts the whole thing into a perspective I didn't get from choosing the Templars.

I enjoyed the Templar route better. The setting was sort of unsettling and it felt a bit more difficult than the Mage.

I like the templar storyline better, because I got a gamebreaking bug in the mage one -.-

both are good though. I prefered the fade bit of the templar route and thought the time travel a bit strange.

I prefered the mage storyline better because you got a glimpse at what the world would be like in little over a year should the Inquisition fail, it made the whole situation feel more urgent. That being said, I really liked the creepy Fade part of the Templar storyline. For the first time ever I actually enjoyed visiting the Fade, pity you don't get to enter the dream version if you go pro-mage.

I haven't played the templar quest yet, but I certainly did become more willing to execute people after the mage quest.

Saw some people complain about the dialogue options during the mage storyline and want to chime in on that:

Why on earth do we have to choose between an almost anders-esque "WHOOOO GO MAGES, **** EVERYONE ELSE" and basically ENSLAVING every single friggin mage? Like, whuatttt?? Why so extremist? If I pick to get the mages support, I don't do it because I want all mages to be free or want to enslave them forever, it's because I need either of the two options to help me close a f***ing hole in the sky.

Where is the Vivienne-eqsue  "Circles are good but they need to be reformed and make it seem less like a prison and more like an academy" choice?

If that dialogue choice was implemented I might just have gone for mages instead.
