Merits of the storyline itself aside, mage side has the most callbacks to previous games: King Alistair, Redcliffe Castle, even Samson as the leader of the Red Templars. I feel like I'm cheating myself when I choose the Templars.

Preferred the Mage route, Templar felt sort of boring to be honest. Though I prefer Calpernia to Samson.

I thought the mage's story was much better tbh.... The whole time travel stuff was pretty great. I also felt the levels and combat was more enjoyable to play.

I would have picked templars, but that dude that knocked out that old woman was painful.

I'm no sjw, but I couldn't side with a nutcase like that.

Still yourself, she is beneath us!

Overall i liked the mages storyline better you get a much better understanding of dorian and whats going on, plus the mages actually approach you for help, it seems urgent the enemy is here! you get to see what you're really fighting against how the future looks, people dying to prevent it and alexius is a great tragic villain.

while apart from baras i can't think of anything from the templar quest line that i liked, it's personal opnion but when the choice is between dorian in the mage quest line vs cole in templars, dorian on the mage side leaves him for dust and yet you miss nothing from coles side not really and i actually love the way cole rocks up in the final haven mission he's just creepy and weird, it's great.

Over all from an in game perspective i don't see a reason to go do the templar mission, they basically told you to get stuffed whilst the mages ask for help and when you arrive you realise things are messed up action must be taken NOW!

Metagaming, character introduction is better on both counts, closing the breach scene makes more sense you're basically using magic to seal the breach and templars are............ using their ability to inhibit magic to help you close the breach, it just seems hamfisted when compared to allowing the inquisitor to channel the mages magic to supercharge the glowing hand.

plus the best line in the game: "he's very angry that you took his mages." just set's cory up so well the whole thing  is great.

EDIT: also the templar quest was ****** easy for me compared to the mage questline.

I liked the mage one the most. Even though I loathe time-traveling. I thought it fit better with the main story.

I think everyone should experience the mage mission at least once. Its just so atmospheric and brooding, aided considerably by the superb music. Seeing the devastation in Redcliffe Castle, and the despair in your companions' and Leliana's faces (Leliana's face!!!) really puts things into perspective. Adds more urgency to the main plot, I feel. Watching them (including my Trevelyan's LI) die in the final stand simply gives it that much more impact.

Special mention to Dorian in this mission, who pretty much cemented his BAMF status. Specifically how he remains cheery and optimistic throughout, not just for himself, but also as emotional support for the Inquisitor, who must have been shocked and terrified.

I also like the post-mission conversation with Leliana, and how she said she would not hesitate to sacrifice herself again if it comes to that.

I'm still on playthrough 1, which I went with the templars.  I enjoyed the actual mission, and the Calpernia content is very interesting so far, plus Ser Barris, and even Lord Abernache, who I have serving as a veiled-threat ambassador in conjunction with the Avvar chief (Loved that option and how it was described in the War Table - 'Do as we say or we won't recall our ambassadors').

For me, it made sense to check the templars, because when you go to redcliffe.. the other mages weren't concern about the Inquisition in the town. Only Fiona was just there and not existing. Connor, Enchanter Ellendra, a Tranquil and some chantry folks were the only ones concerned.

I recruited those agents and went to the templars because I didn't like what Lucius did in Val Royaeux. I love the scene with Ser Barris, making me perform that ritual, then finally making the templars realize they have been tricked so badly.

In my second playthrough, I felt Fiona put all the rebel mages in the Inquisition's hand unwillingly... No other mages voiced their opinion at all, even that other mage guy singing in the jail was ridiculous.. And far worse was that mage demanding my lovely Cassandra for more space they can't have..

Both are good, TBH.  The Mage mission is a bit better than the Templar one, but overall I like the Templar path slightly better because Calpernia is a really interesting villain, Ser Barris is awesome, the Venatori are less aggravating as mobs than the Red Templars, and Cole works better as a character when introduced in the Templar mission.  Cole was not a character I was expecting to enjoy, but he was pretty cool in that mission.

Yeah... I was a bit taken back that he cold clocked an old lady nun (Even putting aside that in the real world I work with nuns and priests ALL day long so I feel a certain kind of way about punching nuns...) The only thing that went through my mind was, "Dude. No matter what I think about her spouting all that nonsense was that REALLY necessary?"

Deciding which of these two major quests to decide whether you support mages or templars is better is genuinely a tough call, but I would give the edge to the Redcliffe mission to retrieve the mages. That time travel magic was really engaging, interesting and unlike anything we've experience in the franchise before!

Not that the templar mission was poor or anything, in fact trying to keep those templars in the hall alive while you dashed around both sides of the exterior courtyard was pretty challenging. And the Fade segment was pretty cool too!

Like I said, tough call.

I find disbanding the templars and turning them into loyal inquisition knights to be the best story/ending. Mages never feel like they actually care about the Inquistion just their independence and letting the templar order rebuild in the short term seems like a good move but in the long term it's most likely things would go back to "normal" which was far from perfect.

The Chantry is somewhat based on the medieval Catholic Church, but that doesn't mean they're the same thing.  People really need to stop thinking of the Chantry as their friendly neighborhood Church, because it is not.  This is probably a big reason Anders is so hated.  They picture him bombing a peaceful charitable organization and not a tyrannical organization that pushes kings around with its huge military and political power.

you make it sound exactly like how the catholic church operated historically (and in some parts of the world still does)

I actually preferred the mage story more. I loved that dark abysmal future. The inclusion of time travel is iffy and I hope they don't use that too often. But for that single story line and the one in the still ruins, I loved it.

Badly worded on my part.  I intended to say that it mirrors the medieval version to a reasonable extent, but not the current day church.

I prefer the Templar story.  The characters in the Templar arc are better, and the Templars are willing to admit fault and work to both make amends and change for the better.

The Mages, by contrast, act like spoiled children who can't believe they could ever be wrong.  And I hate time travel as a plot device.  Time magic opens a whole can of stupidity that the setting didn't need.  If the scene had been a Fade 'what-if', I could probably enjoy it more.

I agree that the Templar arc has much better characters. I loved Ser Barris and loved Cole's interactions with Envy. But I will say that the mage storyline had the best visuals, period. The artists knocked it out of the park. Theirinfall Redoubt didn't have very good visual appeal to me.

The main stength of the Templar path are Calpernia, Ser Barris and Cole's introduction. The Mage path does everything else better IMO, hell it even has a timey whimey plot device that I actually liked, a very rare thing indeed.

I prefer the Templars, I liked Sir Baras, Cole's introduction, the fight with the envy demon and Calpernia was pure gold as the dragon so to speak to the elder one, I also like that its very much a quest for redemption of a organization that exists for good reason but became corrupted as had the seekers who were supposed to watch them to prevent such things.

As for the chantry I wouldn't call it tyrannical just flawed but has good points much like the medieval catholic church which when you look at the history and not the propaganda about it was flawed but had good points. If you truely want Tyrannical organizations look to Tevintor and the Qun but in different ways.

I like the horror feel of the Templar storyline, and it feels much more personal for my Inquisitor, who has to battle Envy to keep the demon from assuming his identity. Also, with the templars, you're actually saving innocent people from being turned into monsters; the mages basically make their bed by allying with Tevinter.

I prefer the Templar story but i pick mages simply because having Fiona as the "boss" battle at the trebuchet is a big lol

I remember there being a good amount of mage NPCs in Redcliffe going "holy **** Fiona is insane do not waaaant". They certainly do think they can be wrong lol.

Otherwise the thing with time travel is a mixed bag for me. I executed Alexius but in the back of my mind wondered if he was just gonna show up again from some alternate timeline.

I enjoyed/sided the mage quest as  a warrior, I especially enjoyed all the cut scenes. Time travel I really like and how the writing did pull me into the game wondering if my crew would find our way back to our timeline.

Makes me wonder tho, because I took Solas & Varrik with me on that quest.  And Solas was infected with the red lyrium bound up in the dungeon. When I found him he was all ...... jacked up red eyes glowing and all.

So....  how can Solas "DreadWolf"  be infected and affected by the red lyrium? I guess anyone can including Flem?  Also Leliana's reply in a scene when Solas paused and in sadness said don't you want to know what happened and how we got here?

Leliana in an angry voice said no!  it seemed as if the future Leliana knew everything how this red lyrium future happened and who originally was responsible "solas orb". Yet she didn't say.... she just said however you got here you need to go back find a way back and stop this future from happening. She was really pi*sed and angry. A very evil Leliana in the future she was in the mage run/quest.
