Sorry if this is obvious, but I had a couple of questions about crafting.

When trying to craft armor, do the materials you use have any effect on what armor you make?

Also, if they don't have any effect on what armor you craft, is there a way to unlock additional armor to craft?  For example, I made the Dread Reaver's Mail (blue quality) and it unlocked three additional sets to craft.  I crafted the Dread Reaver's Mail (Dragonblood) afterwards and found that it was just slightly better.  I figured it was just random level/quality, but now salvaged enough materials to make the Dread Reaver's Mail (Dragonbone) and has the same exact stats, but different name/color.

The mats you use don't matter, use lowest tier.

You get starter armor + 3 identical stat armors with color changes (tier 1) and tier 2 base armor + 3 identical upgraded (from tier1,and tier2 base) stat armors with the same color changes and a different appearance for each class.  Katari and I believe necromancer can get tier 3 armor.  You unlock the tier 2 color change schematics by crafting the base tier 2 armor or getting it as a loot reward.

Thanks!

So does higher level armor drop at all?  Haven't seen any yet. ;p

Yep it drops once you've unlocked t2 by either crafting or getting the base armor as a drop.  You can't get a color variant tier 2 as a drop until having the base T2 armor.
