Which one did you choose? I am leaning toward Templar, but honestly, I have no clue what I'm doing. Do any of these classes affect the story anyway?
Templar, Reaver or Champion?

Storywise, I doubt they do. There won't be any recognition I bet on what you choose, but you can get some insight into what being a Templar is like from Cullen. Not just from the initial talk with him, but through a quest that involves him later on.
Personally, I'm going Champion. Honestly don't think my Cadash could deal with that **** a Templar has to endure. Plus, he kills mages easily enough as it is.

I went Champion and it was mentioned by at least one companion and also a character in the main storyline. Nothing major really, just more dialogue.

Oh thank you, I think I might change my ways then and go Champion, if it's not too late (didn't finish the "way of the templar" yet.

Cassandra mentions that many dragon hunters from Nevarra were reavers to help hunt dragons better or something like that and that a lot of them ended up becoming psychopathic killing innocent villagers and such. They basically became blood thirsty. She points out that she feels you, the inquisitor, are strong enough to resist the negative temptations.

You can ask Cullen his opinion on taking the Templar spec. That conversation is different depending on if you are in a romance with him or not.

At some point, there is reactivity to your choice. Not much, mind you, but someone comments on each one.
I went Templar, because blowing up demons and Red Templars with their own barriers was just too useful. If I had it to do over (and hey, I do!
), I'd go Reaver.
Though that does bring up something I personally felt killed a little replayability. The fact that the companions each have exactly the same specialization trees as the Inquisitor can get is a bit of a detriment. I mean, if I really want to play a Reaver, from a gameplay perspective, I don't have to roll a new Inquisitor, I can just control Bull. If I want to play a Necromancer, I just have to control Dorian. Etc etc. Had the companion specs been even slightly unique, I feel like there would have been more incentive to try different ones on my Inquisitor.

I was considering becoming a Templar but Cullen convinced me no to.
I wanted to go reaver for the dps, but I chose Champion purely for thematical reasons. Seems fitting for the "Inquisitooor!"

I loved the companion specialization trees in DA2. They had some overlap with ones available to Hawke, but featured many unique abilities. (Merrill's come to mind, with its distinctively Dalish magic; I remember wishing for something similar in DA:O when Morrigan was limited to the same sort of spells an average Circle mage could learn.)

Spoilerthat Seekers do, but I think Cassandra might be far too protective of the Inquisitor (romance or not) to let him or her go through that.

Each class has a support spec now that healing is gone. Templar is this spec for warriors, it helps to protect your allies and support them in battle, its also grants bonus versus demons this time instead of mages which is much more useful.
Champion is best tank in the game, period.
Reaver is for damage and some self survive.

SpoilerIt's also fasting and religious contemplation. TheSpoileris probably used to help with the the other two parts.
I meant to write year, not month. And it would fit my main Inquisitor, RP-wise (who's a devout Trevelyan).

Pretty much anything with a Barrier is Templar chow.

Reaver, it is gory, brutal, unapologetic, ruthless...It fits like a glove.
It's also the coolest, most kickass spec to have atm. I miss the old Devour animation from Dragon Age II though.

I've been thinking of going for weapon and shield, getting the damage skills and all the passives in the other trees to boost strength, choosing Champion, and being a kind of Warrior Duelist. Challenge a guy with the Champion taunt, block with Shield Wall to raise guard or just pop the invincibility skill in Champion, and use the skills in weapon and shield like Payback Strike, Lunge and Slash, and Shield Bash to kill them. Upgrade to payback strike stuns taunted foes which will allow me to follow up with a detonator like Lunge and Slash or Shield Bash. Thoughts?

Champion all the way. Cullen scared me away from the Templar & as much as I would love for Bull to dry hump me while I smell like a dragon I rather not step on his toes. I also agree that I hate sharing a spec with a companion. Some specializations don't work well in pairs.
The double spec part is true for most cases...except Templar. Templar passives stacks so if you have 2 (you and Cass) you get a straight up 20% elemental resistance and 20% damage against demons for ALL your party. Plus double Wrath of Heaven + Spell Purge. 2 templars and a mage also makes rifts ridiculous.
Other than that Champion as S&S contributes a lot on boss fights with To the Death while remaining pretty much immortal. Champion can also solo the game pretty much the same way a Knight Enchanter can, well not so easily since you do less damage but you can solo almost every dragon.

I went Reaver. A fully developed Devour makes it a bit easier when fighting to not use as many health potions. In DA:2 my warriors seldom uses health potions (even on higher difficulties). I haven't played enough into this one to say it is comparable, but right now it is proving to be so and helps in fights where I need a boost on health but not using up one of health potions, since you can not carry as many as you once did in other games.
Honestly, since it is a game, I don't "feel" as emotional on the whole Templar thing (even if Cullen is romanced) for my character. I feel horrid over what Cullen is going through because of it, but its due to seeing what he is fighting. My characters doesn't show the pain and suffering from being a Templar in other games, so it isn't as emotional for me to be such.
As far as Champion goes, Blackwall with a fully pointed Champion kicks butt, but for my play style I just don't seem to use it as much. Try playing one of your companions in some battles with each one (Blackwall - Champion, Bull - Reaver and Cassandra - Templar) and then see which fits your play style bests.

The passives as good and Wrath of Heaven is the best stun in game. Demons + Anything wth a barrier is litterally chow. Purge is also one the best detanators in game.
I was solo'ing all the end game Dragons with reasonable ease.
