Alix will always be my fav Inquisitor, but Sumalee is pretty good too, though I thought she was far more amazing in Mass Effect 3 as the female Turian Nyreen. Alix as Samantha was also great. I think the slightly flatter voice tones in DAI is because they have to play as how you choose. Out of the males, Harry is just awesome, but I love Jon even though he will always be Zevran to me lol

In the end, Alix still wins for me because of her large range of emotions, especially in Trespasser.

Everybody talks about Alix being Traynor and I'm like "Nope... Mhairi!" That's when I really took notice, like Damn, what a sexy voice. I also like her delivery when Cauthrien says "Pull out! All of you, let's move!"

They lacked screentime unlike Traynor, but I liked them too and I found Mhairi's death was so disappointing. She had potential and Cauthrien should have been a companion! I loved her character!

I always headcanon that the Lavellan clan traded with dwarves, because I can't give up that Sumalee voice, haha.

It puts a different spin on... certain scenes. When I've spent so much time with an inquisitor who's 100% reserved and calm, that subtle shift of emotion really gets to me. Her "tough guy" exterior cracks, just a little, before she snaps it shut again. She isn't thrown by enemies, by death, by political scheming, but this is the thing that breaks her.

I may have to do an elf with her voice then..... :)

I would gladly trade Oghren for Mhairi in a heartbeat after seeing his Awakening personality. Cauthrien is a good character too, I agree.

yeah I was disappointed for Mhari too especially as you don't really get any soldiers for selection in Awakening they'er either all mages or rogues. Not that I'm against those but it would have been nice to have more than just Oghren and Justice to an extent.

I'd much rather have Mhairi over the stupid zombie.

I like all the voices for different characters. It's pretty awesome that they added a choice for the voice actor we wanted for our character. It wasn't until my 5th character that I had to go with a voice I had already used!

Just realised this. That's phenomenal. Well done, Bioware. Smashing.

I only play male characters.

And honestly:

Hated both the voices - a lot.

I can't take the inquisitor seriously with either voice.

I'm British and I absolutely HATE!! the British voice they chose. It just sounds overly posh like a stuck up pansy at an expensive boarding school

not the sort of voice to be commanding armies and giving speeches to the largest most powerful organisation in Thedas.

Sounds more like he should be in charge of the inquistions book keeping and library.

If they wanted a british voice it should have been something like this:

Wow just realised Idris is wearing mass effect armor XD

or another voice I would have like is one similar to Russel Crowe in gladiator

Or the voice of Charles Vane in Black Sails

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zw9jSl9lPg0

Anything similar to these would have been 10000000000x better

Honestly, I didn't like either female voices. Sumalee's is alright, but too mature-sounding for the characters I typically play. It's great for a Qunari Inquisitor though. I'm also not a huge fan of British accents and even if I were, I don't think I'd like Alix's voice anyways.

Scout Harding's voice (don't know the VA, sorry!) would be my ideal for a protagonist.

I like Sumalee's, I especially love her delivery of "What is it?" when dealing with the Requisition Officer. It's the right balance of irritation and annoyance. The others sound too polite.

I have a dwarf male save with American Male, and he sounds a bit bland. I have a hard time getting my head around that it's Jon Curry because as Quizzy, he just doesn't seem to have as much emotion behind his voice. Sometimes it sounds like he's making a statement instead of asking a question. It's an older save that I I haven't played that far into yet, so maybe it'll grow on me when I get back to it. I remember feeling that way about Alix's voice. She was the voice of my first Quizzy and it took some getting used to. I like it now, but I have used Sumalee's for my last two saves. I've used the British male voice before, I think it's fine, but would not suit my dwarf character.

As for the female voices, I vastly prefer Alix over Sumalee. She just brings more emotion in to play when delivering certain lines. Sumalee sounds too monotone for me to enjoy her and partly because of that, I have not gotten far with a Qunari. But I can't give them Alix' voice either because it just doesn't really fit either Dwarf or Qunari imo.
Funnily enough, I prefered Sumalee as Nyreen over Alix as Traynor. But to be fair, that was probably just because I found the character that is Samantha Traynor to be annoying. Can't fault Alix for that.
And I only play as females so I can't comment on the male voices.

That would be Ali Hillis who played both Liara in Mass Effect and Lightning in FF13 so in a sense she's already played an RPG protagonist although not in Bioware's games

Yeah Alix for me in most of those situations seems to edliver the line pretty much exactly th ewa yI'd imagine my character would so for me that's the main reason why she's my favourite voice on my quizzies

Sumalees voice kind of saved the game for me.

My first play through was a male inquisitor with the british voice and I hate both male voices. British sounds like stuck-up school boy, american sounds like an ogre. Kind of ruined the fun. I also don't like Alix voice, too high-pitched and sort of fake sounding. Sumalee was perfect for a down-to-earth no-bullshit inquisitor, at least in my opinion.

Went with Alix on my first playthrough with my dwarf, and thought she was okay...but not the greatest when it came to being snarky and sarcastic. I don't know why, but it always seemed to come out a bit forced and awkward. Bland and boring most of the time; uninteresting, even. Nothing compared to FemHawke's sarcastic voice, of course.

Then, I played a male elf with Harry Hadden-Paton's voice, and I instantly fell in love with it. The perfect voice I craved for my sarcastic, charming, but bipolar Inquisitor. IMHO, it blew Alix's voice right out of the water for me. His voice is what helped made DAI more enjoyable to me, compared to the first playthrough where my feelings were just "meh" and "okay" after playing through with my dwarf. It's hard going back to playing a female Inquisitor, now, after falling in love with the male British voice. Especially, during the Winter Palace mission. My suave Dalish Elf and that voice was made for that mission. It was marvelous.

So, yeah, the male British voice is the only voice for me. I'm never playing a female Inquisitor, again.

Having played through and finished the game and it's DLC's thoroughly, several times and with each voice, I can give you my brief opinion on them.

The British Male voice - Harry Hadden-Paton: Personally I really liked it and it fits an elf or human character really well. However in some situations it was quite emotionless, compared to the other voices, much like Mark Meer's voice compared to Hale's in Mass Effect! But on a whole, I really liked it. He is quite good at delivering the diplomatic or sarcastic/jokey lines.

The American Male voice - Jon Curry: Now I have to say this one is my absolute favourite. The level of emotion in his deliverance is superb and he gives the character so much personality. He was good at being diplomatic, sarcastic and aggressive. I liked every response I chose with this voice.

The American Female voice - Sumalee Montano: It took a while before I used this voice for one of my characters, but I have recently completed the game with this voice for my female dwarf and I was very impressed. It was better than I expected, as I didn't like how she sounded in the prologue, but throughout the game she just got better and better until I fell in love with her voice.

The British Female voice - Alix Wilton Regan: I'm sorry to say this, but I found this one to be my least favourite, which really surprised me, as before the game was released I was really excited that she was one of the voices for the female Inquisitor. I loved her voice in other Dragon Ages and in Mass Effect 3, but playing an Inquisitor with her voice, I just didn't warm to it. A lot of the time it sounded very bland and breathy and it sounded like she was reading the lines, I think she tried too hard to sound authoratative. There were only a small few occasions where I liked how she delivered the lines.

I find it so fascinating not just that many people enjoy different voice actors but also how they interpret each voice. For instance, I think Harry Hadden-Patten is the most expressive and emotional of the quartet but some people think he's the most bland. I think that means they got a diverse selection of actors. Maybe. Good though.

I always use the american male voice for my Lavellan! I just can't stand the other one, so I'm happy I like the male american very, very much! :) I kind of like the idea of skinny, tall men having really deep voices.

I only played with the British male voice , I tried a female Inqui with the british female voice , and I just couldn't do it ...sounded too much like she was some kind of authority figure.

Anyway overall I really liked the British dude except ...he can't scream orders or make believable speeches.Every time I free the mages or free the wardens , it's just terrible.

It was also bad when the Inqui can get a nervous breakdown in Trespasser.

Also sometimes he sounded far far too posh , again in Trespasser you can talk with Bull about some vague history knowledge stuff...and dear lord it was painful.

Suddenly I had to picture my Dalish who was just a random hunter with a cup of tea , pinkie finger up , a gentlement hat and a monocle."Dear Iron Bull , did you know in Ferelden they call Teyrn whatever ...yes , fascinating , isn't?Also what we think of the veil isn't truly a barrier , oh no , my dear friend...blablabla " ...

Here is the order of characters to VA's that I have used:
Female elf necromancer: Alix Wilton Regan
Male qunari assasin: Jon Curry
Female human knight-enchanter: Sumalee Montano
Female elf rift mage: Alix Wilton Regan
Male human templar: Harry Hadden-Paton

Everyone did acceptable, no one was terrible. I went with Sumalee for my female human because I wasn't sure how many pt I would be doing. I wanted a chance to play with her, I knew I would play an elf right after and didn't think her voice would sound right coming out of an elf. So glad I did because a) Sumalee did a FANTASTIC job and her authoritative voice worked so well for a noble born knight-enchanter. Unfortunatly b ) by the end of my rift mage run Alix's voice was starting to grate on me. Someone mentioned it before and I think she is a little shrill too. I know I wouldn't have finished my rift mage play through if I'd gone with her for my female human as well.

Harry on the other hand started out not really working for me, but I felt he vastly improved toward the end of the game. I think maybe my problem with the British VA's is they are both very well spoken, maybe too well spoken to perfectly fit in the roles I had them play in my games? I mean that is just a personal preference so in no way am I saying they're bad. And while I feel Harry is better at coming across as authoritative figure as inquisitor than Alix is I feel he is far better suited at snarkiness.

Jon Curry worked very well with the Inquisitor I gave his voice (big ol' softie) so no complaints at all. I cannot believe this is the same guy who voiced Zevran they sound so different?!

So I think overall I'm saying:
Sumalee > Jon > Harry > Alix or
Americans over British which is weird for me because I would normally gravitate the other way.

I am glad they had this set up. Not so sure I could have played this as much as I did listening to the same VA over and over again no matter how good they were.
