I am a dual-wield rogue with Varric, Solas and Blackwall as my companions. To my knowledge, my main character is the only one who should be able to be putting enemies to sleep. However, lately I have been seeing enemies be put to sleep left and right. What is going on here? I know it is not me.

 

None of my companions have any sleep abilities:

 

Varric is specced into bow skills and poison, and that's about it.

 

Solas uses that one winter freeze skill and chain lightning and barrier; otherwise, he is specced into his rift mage abilities.

 

Blackwall uses nothing but Guard-gaining skills.

 

To top it off, this sleep affect seems to be even more effective at keeping enemies asleep when they get wacked; they sleep for about 2-3 seconds before they get up. Not that I'm complaining too much about this issue, but it is definitely strange. I usually like to keep tabs (and be knowledgeable) about everything that is going on with my party.

It's Solas. It seems to be from shocked/paralyzed + eldritch detonator. If you throw dispell on that youwill do immense damage and allow to yourself and Varric to auto-crit on enemy if he will take knockout powder branch of subtrefuge.

 

Also that sleep is goot for combination with impact abilities of Blackwall to create rupture. But since nightmare is much fancier option its good to chain sleep>dispell to add above that serious spirit damage and panic effect.

 

You use mind blast or dispell, right?

 

Btw i used such combo (DW rogue + Cole with x2 knock powder and x1 knock bomb, Solas with shock>sleep>dispell=nightmare combo. CD on Dispell is very low, and this spell becomes very very useful dispellign enemies barriers and puts everything around into nightmare, whiole rogues autocrit. This was my tactic of my first nigthmare run.

 

Add to that Blackwall or Cassandra with impact detonator abilities to generate rupture, and some precision detonators on your rogues to pop frozen targets, and you set.

 

enemies immune to sleep were pain in ass and normally been dealt with bee bombs, but those who were not were easy prey.

also that, shocked + weakness = sleep as well. 

It usuallt generates if your target been shocked, then stunned (via disrupt rift or warrior stun), then eldritch detonated = sleep.

 

If you throw Dispell on this to detoane once more you also create nightmare. Chaining effects is powerful tool.

I dabble with Nightmares alot during my play. Works wonders with Venatori/Red templars/Some demons/animals/bandits

Thank you, Blackstork! Very useful/insightful information you have laid down there. I will be trying out these combos for myself as soon as I get the chance.

 

@Zahnen I forgot to mention that one. I don't have the upgrade for that skill learned yet. Thanks for pointing that out though.

I was not aware that Shocked or Weakness was part of any combos.

 

Shocked is a debuff which makes nearby allies take damage when you do.  Paralyze is the disable the lines up combos.

 

Weakness is another debuff which makes enemies deal 15% less damage.  It is not in and of itself a detonator (which finishes a combo).  There are many skills which both apply weakness AND are either disables or detonators but that doesn't make weakness a detonator by itself.

 

That said there are combos that CAUSE weakness such as an Eldritch Detonator on a Stunned (typical warrior disable) target as you mentioned.

 

Now this is directly from the in game Codex about combos.  But it isn't to say you are wrong... there are TONS of undocumented mechanics in this game as well as unintentional bugs.  It is very possible the shocked + weakness = sleep.  I'll test it when I get home with something like Chain Lightning (causes shock but not paralyze) into something like pull of the abyss, veil strike, or a warrior crit with the Crippling Blow ability.

Tested: Shocked + Weakness = Sleeeeep. Not just a weak version of sleep like the subterfuge sleep powder or anything, but deep sleep where the enemy stays asleep for many seconds after getting hit. It works even better than upgraded sleep powder (of which I could discern no difference from the non-upgraded version other than length of undisturbed sleep status).
