At the risk of sounding like an idiot, can someone please explain what Focus is? I managed to find a gamefaqs page linking it to a specialisation but it was not clear? Thank you.

Don't worry, it won't unlock until you have progressed the story a bit - I was confused at first too.

 

In short it's a power bar that loads up when your party attacks and when it's full you can do a "super attack" of sorts. You'll know when you get it.

I think I may have already reached that point as I see this thing around my battle abilities that spins then lights up some node or mark, but had no clue how to utilise it. Or maybe I just haven't reached that point like you said.

It's supposed to be a bar split up into three segments above your hotbar, it will fill up with a yellow glow. At least that is the case on PC, im not sure about consoles since the UI is slightly different. Anyway, im sure you will know when you get it since you get a new ability to use with it and a tutorial how to use it.

Do extra layers of focus unlock as your progress in the story? The U.I is a little unclear, so I'm not sure how powerful my ability will be.

No, you have to unlock the 200 and 300 max focus from your inquisition perks. It's the first tree you can go into, I can't remember what it's called... Power I think?

As for how powerful the skill will get, it increases quite a bit in power once you get to the next tier of focus. It should say what it does on the skill I think, but I haven't played in a few days so I could be a little off on that.

Like for example, the Templar focus skill that gives 10% guard/stamina/mana per second + 10% damage reduction for the team, it increases to 20% and then 30% on the next two tiers.

On the console versions, there's a bar around your Mana/Stamina bar. When it's empty, you see some diamonds, but once it's full, it looks like the standard Mana/Stamina bar, just thinner and a different color. I think the reason for the diamonds switching to the standard bar is so you can see at a glance which sections are full and which ones are still being charged, so you can tell at a glance what level your focus ability will be at. Less time spent staring at the focus bar and more time concentrating on combat.

Does the basic focus skill scale with the focus tier? The description isn't very helpful.
