So I am new to this Dragon age game and when I play these games my biggest concern is having the best party composition. So after doing some research on the various companions I think I have made a decision on my party but am still unsure. My main character is going to be a Rogue Archer and the party I think I will take is Blackwall for tank and Vivienne for mage. Now I am confused as what I want for my last member. Would it be better to take another mage or maybe take a melee dps like a duel wielding rogue assassin. Any input and advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have 2H warrior, and for exploration I usually bring a mage, a shield warrior, and a ranged rogue.  (usually Dorian for lols, Cass or Blackwall depending on the area/mission, and Sera for lols/better dps than Varric).  For dragons you may want to bring whichever mage has more Barrier passives, and then 2 shield warriors.

It also depends on build you going to pull on them. Also atm KE spec is OP and if you ok with playing really OP spec then you should play Melee Viv then.

there few approaches, which also depend on what spec you will take and how you plan to organize your tactics.

Here you can pick anyone for 4rth character, assuming you like the character/interaction/banter you will have in your party with Viv and Blackwall.

The thing that 4rth members choice could force/change your priorities and tactic approach.

1. If you get DW rogue : (Cole) - hard time at start, need alot of micromanagement, very useful on taking out pesky mages/rangers, co-intitiating with your archer, and generally stun-locking party primary target, and massive effect chaining. It is high risk hi reward option, which is invaluable on later levels and demand alot of eldritch detonators from your mage, who should be spirit-oriented one (preferably) . Cole mixes with Solas well even in tactics department, and assuming conflicts with Viv this could work better if you just swap Viv for Solas.

2. If you get 2w warrior - If you will play with FF on, this means he is isolated guy who gathers attention. I am not sure it mixes well with pure tank in party, more with another mage who have barriers, so probably swapping Black for Dorian/Solas if you take Bull and play ranged archer is necessary.

3. Another Tank (Cassandra) - You will rock majority of  encounters, they will be long cause your dps may lack some (safe play tho), while some encounters will be very tough (mostly it is strong combo, exlusions are cases like Envy Demon and some other nasty bosses/rift demon bosses.

4. Mage - It also depends which kind. You will need to have one of those mages specced in pure (almot pure) spirit tree , while other is barrier + CC/AOE dps. Good option, and either Solas or Dorian fit well.

6. Another archer (Sera or Varric) - will work well if you spec later as Assasin if have Sera or Tempest if have Varric. Sera dps > Varric. Varric have wide party aura like effects. Also Sera conflicts with Viv. Be sure to have barrier/some spirit stuff on Viv then, since you have 2 squishies. Your aim is powerful initiation with Full Draws , and its better to have kite abilities if things getting hairy. For Viv archer rogues lack shatter detonators compared to DW rogues, but the ice wall provide additional tactic utility.

What I've gravitated toward so far in DAI is getting together an A Team for dragon fights.

IMO, a tank, two damage dealers (one of which needs to generate some guard) and a mage that casts the dragon's vulnerability, or at least can do nothing but barrier/heal.

I've personally found that rogues, especially a dual wielder/shadow type, require more micro managing to be effective.

If I was playing an archer, though, and had a mage along as well (pretty much required) I'd seriously consider two tanks to keep the pressure off the squishy members.

I was a dual-wield rogue.  I usually go with rogue, two fighters, and a mage.  I like Solas for barrier-type magic but I got Dorian a cool spell where he can make one of the enemies fight against his own, which is VERY handy, let me tell you!  Plus he is fun to take along on missions.

I found Cassandra to be the toughest fighter.  Iron Bull seems like he would be good but he dies SO MUCH.  to the point that I generally take Blackwall instead.

So my usual party would be either Cassandra, Blackwall, Dorian, me, or Cassandra, Blackwall, Solas, and me.  Occasionally substituted Iron Bull for Blackwall.

Next time I am going to be a warrior so I'm curious about which rogue is best.

So far I use a 1 tank - 2 mage -1 archer rogue format (Fade rifts made easy)

Basically you have 3 characters that can dispel fade summons which can take a 6 enemy fight down to 1.  (really lovely on nightmare)

Tank is Cassandra: Her templar spell purge will unsummon rift demons like dispel does

Mages: solas and viv (can be dorian) Both have barrier and dispel.  viv is my frost mage while solas is the barrier mage.  (I make sure I control vivs barrier and all freezing spells)

Rogue: archer inquisitor.  I combo shatters everytime my long shot procs.  Assassin spec: hidden blades always used when I make a mage use wintersgrasp.

I've only gotten to level 16 but I have a comp that I'm finding efficient for my rogue.  CC like in many games is king and this group is focused around locking multiple enemies down at a time so my rogue can pick them off 1 by 1.

Cassandra - Spell Purge yep. Turn the Bolt/Blade important. Grappling Chain to grab a ranged character or grab a melee away from my backline. A bunch of stuff from Vanguard that tree is amazing. Working on the right side of Templar tree atm.

Dorian - A Necromancer passive lets him stand around for 10 seconds when he dies casting all of his spells limited only by their cooldowns. Good for oh crap moments and good to revive other party members. Other than that he gets good cc from the fire spells and I speced him heavy into the spirit tree for strong barriers and an upgraded revive because of the Necro passive. He's going to fill out the rest of the spirit tree for increased resource generation when his barrier is up.

Solas - Just a great mage all around. A shame his personality is so boring. He puts weakness on everything and removes 30% of the enemies damage while increasing the duration of any status effect they receive. He gets basic barrier and is speced into Electricity for Static Cage. He's going to move into the frost tree for survivability and more cc.

I say get a plan together and stick with it. Another note mix the party up. It sucks to gear everyone up and or swap gear around but variety is great and the party banter is better.
