At what level did you kill your first dragon (not counting exploits, etc.)?

I killed it too late. Was probably level 15, pretty much stumbled upon the dragon by a quest line (you know which one), so I used my usual setup: Shield warrior (Cass), barrier mage (Dorian), ranged rogue (Varric), dw rogue (me).
Used tactics to disable fire abilities, and only used tac-cam for the opening attack and to reposition the ranged guys if the dragon moved too much. Only switched chars once to revive my dead rogue.

lvl 16 I think. Probably too late, should have started earlier. Fereldan Frostback, which is, I think, the weakest in the game. Then I went for the Stormrider (easily killed) and the Abyssal. Neither of them were much of a challenge. Playing on hard, my Inquisitor is a ranged rogue, and I had Varric, Viv and Cass. Upgrading the fire/electric resistance tonics really helped too. I had never used them until then, and upgrading them is really easy. A full duration and resistance upgraded one (without the last ability) gives 60% resistance for 180 seconds. They take only 1 Splindeweed to make.

19. Didn't bother before I accidently bumped into a level 19 dragon in that frozen are.( Lion-something-place-thingy). I had just put points into the dragon-roar in Reaver, as I didn't particulary like how it takes away the whole playstyle of the 2h warrior.
The dragon exploded. This was on Nightmare.

Level twelve. Died on first effort, beat it - barely - on the second. Zero potions left, down to Cassandra.
Epic battle. Just hard enough to feel rewarding but not cheap.

How do you guys do it...
I probably should modify or upgrade my gear. Fareldan Frostback's one fireball + resulting damage over time was enough to kill any party member without barrier.
At level 17...
It seems I have absolutely no idea on how to fight dragons in this game
.

Get some resistance. There are belts giving 5%/10%/15%/30% fire resistance.
Get somebody in melee asap. He(or is it a she?..) stops spitting fire by then.
Resistance potions are huge help. Cost nothing to make, gives you 60% fire resistance for quite a while fully upgraded.
Know the tells. The dragon imitates his(her?) abilities. You can usually tell whenever something is happening, and act accordingly.
Avoid standing behind a dragon. The tail swipe hurts.
When a dragon flies up, run around and try to avoid the fire balls.

Level 14. Was waiting for Fire resist tonic upgrades and well to be more confident. Frostback and Northern Hunter one after another. I found Hunter more annoying. Took Cassandra for Forstback and Blackwall for Hunter, Iron Bull, Sera and PC mage. The S&B tanks were invincible keeping aggro whole fight. Tried to sneak past Forstback on level 6 or something FNV to the casino! style but no no.

I was not bothering with dragons on Nightmare until I finished all of Hissing Wastes up to the temple at level 18, and I figured I'd give the level 20 there a shot. I died a lot. I managed to get to the adds phase a couple of times (<50%) but really wasn't close. So I went back to Skyhold and looked at what kind of fire resistance gear I could put together. Turned out it was not too hard to get all four characters over 70% resistant to fire.
Not quite so confident yet, however, I went to try it out on Ferelden Frostback. No problem at all. Went to the one in Western Approach. Also no problem, but they were lower levels. So I went back to Hissing Wastes, and the level 20 was very little trouble at level 19. I probably could have killed the 23 at that point too.
With enough resistance to the dragon's element, the whole fight is about positioning for the wing beat. You can do this for fire and frost rather easily, and you can skimp on Blackwall if you want, since he can use Walking Fortress for breaths and generates guard like crazy. Electricity is a bit harder. I could only get to around 30-40%, which was not enough to eat the damage. Got to really make sure those rings don't cross and stay out of the water.

Killed my Fereldan frostback on Nightmare level 12. No exploits :Warning a lot of pausing required.
Cassandra
Varric
Vivienne
Rift mage Inquisitor
-Before fighting make sure you charge up your focus meter. I only have one the time i fought him.
-Everyone has equipped fire resistance potions.
-Don't go too far from the dragon with your ranged characters, his "vaccum" move hurts a lot.
-I have Cassandra set as:
-Behavior follow Cassandra
-Warcry preferred
-Challenge preferred
-Then everything set to disabled. I've had no issues losing aggro.

Max upgrading and using fire resistance potions made him go from too hard to pretty easy on my first playthrough, i'd recommend starting with that- you shouldn't have to mess with the gear much, although you could if you want to be extra sure. The potions alone will give you 60% fire resistance for 3 minutes though, and it costs barely anything, a couple of spindleweed and one rare flower per upgrade.

Where do you get the various resistance potions?

Movement abilities help SO much against that guy. Fade step for the mages, leaping shot worked well enough for Varric, and then bull's charge for the warriors. Evade the fireballs and if you do get hit, get out of the burning ground! Make sure you save the movement abilities and only use them to evade or to rush forward if it starts flapping its wings to pull you in (Varric died from that every time it was used as he couldn't charge in, but Dorian usually was fine with fade step). When I tried to tank up the dmg with guard and with barrier, I got slaughtered, but evading the big stuff meant it was pretty smooth sailing. And by "smooth sailing" I mean I was on edge watching for any signs of fiery doom headed my way.

I don't about how it plays on the consoles, but the PC version of killing the Electrical Dragon is like jumping into a lake with electrical wire all around., It took me a very long time trying to focus on one leg then trying to get me 2handed & shield guys close enough to do it all over again., I was more upset with the combat then the actual deed of doing it.
Its like they(someone in their design department /ai scripting) decided you're going to use tactical view and play the start engage/stop/engage/repeat. At some points in the game I felt like damn, I might as well do it myself since the AI is so stupid..
On a side note: Its really heard to root/play with sword/shield not real benefit using it, against a enemy attacking you and you can time your blocks that fighting style is ok
usually vs demons and such, but giants/dragons "forget about it".. The Giant throws "boulders" you're not blocking that., Dragons Have a AOE sweep, you're not blocking that. I feel for Cassandra and Blackwell, just not useful in battle, that's just me though.
Now I think they did a good job with the Dragon's combat ability, except, I would've had him perch up higher and just breath down on you every 5 minutes.
which makes you use your mage and range guys for long distant fighting while under cover as you wait for the dragon to jumps back on the ground for melee.
In any event, any one who has done the electrical dragon (without cheats) and didn't die 10 times, I would like to see a video of how you did it....

I was level 14 on HARD difficulty, but ended up fighting the dragon (Abyssal High) solo (with no party members).
I over-prepped for it, and ended up not using any potions as well. I made a video of it, but it was a 35 minute fight.
