I killed it too late. Was probably level 15
You know, I wonder about that, since the loot you get is level 15.

Without resistance you can't kill legit the dragons without being in same level range (I mean 4 levels, so if Frostback is 12, you can do it 8-16, the higher the better of course).
IMHO the biggest threat to fighting dragons is not the dragon itself, but the bad / poor AI of your companions, which will do stuff randomly despite you telling them to do the opposite.
Dispel is your best spell (save mana for it) vs fireballs / lightning circles etc.
Hinterlands Dragon at L11 on nightmare... I had fully upgraded fire resist potions on each of my characters, it makes the fight very easy. I did the crestwood one at 13 without resist potions... that thing was a joke.
I couldn't figure out how to actually find the Hinterlands dragon until level 15, and by then it was a cakewalk.

Didn't I see a tip on a load screen that says you won't get XP for killing anything more than 3 levels below you?
My first dragon was the from the Western approach, the easiest in my opinion. Thanks to crappy Pc controls i had to wait level 16 before being able to take it down. After that i was on a roll, i took down the one from the Hinterlands and after that i obliterated the one in Crestwood. Unfortunately, the items they gave me where completely useless :/
My comp is : Cassandra, Varric, Solas and me on DW rogue.
Level 11.
It was the one in the Hinterlands.
Killed the Ferelden Frostback in the Hinterlands at level 11 on hard difficulty. My party was Cassandra, Vivienne, Sera and myself, a two handed warrior.
The fight wasn't too difficult, as someone mentioned, the only real difficulty lies in whether your companions are actually doing what you tell them to do and are standing in the spot you set them to.
Also abusing Whirlwind made the fight a bit easy ![]()
My biggest problem with the Ferelden Frostback was his flying phase. He flies, I run. My party runs behind me. He shoots a fireball, I manage to out run it -- but my party manage to just hit the fireball impact as they run behind me. All of them. Then they stand there like idiots.
/Sigh
Where do you get the various resistance potions?
Merchant in "Val Royeaux" sells them (2 merchants in one room, one of them sells books)... location South East up the stairs... guys name is Willvan, however I don't think he turns up until you arrive at Skyhold. Fairly sure it is him.
