some time ago i read that bioware was aiming to create more "nuanced" romances, ie. being able to enter a relationship with a companion without having to say\do things that were catered toward boosting their approval ratings. can anyone please confirm if you are indeed able to do this?
is it possible to romance a rivaled\disapproving companion?

Well... Maybe they were referring to the fact that Cassandra, for instance, disapproves of your flirting sometimes, but it doesn't hurt the potential for romance. I have not seen or heard of rival romances yet though.

Yes, you can do a romance with a character who has disapproved. This is the only way to romance Cassandra and get her to not become Divine, though you will need to kill around 4/5 of her targets to gain approval that will unlock the scenes. But by disagreeing with her stance on the chantry and mages, she will reference that throughout the romance.
