So calling another race as children compared to you is not insulting the race in any way, shape, or form?

And I am annoyed because they changed how my character was. My Dalish Warden never said the word shemlen once in all of Origins.

If one race is immortal and the other is not it isn't. Coming from modern elves it's just ironic folly and pretty amusing. But not insulting.

BW well technically gaider once said that once your heroes tale is over they arent "yours" anymore so they may have some new quirks

And you know what... WHATEVER. It's because of anal people like yourself that the Warden isn't likely to cameo.

They could easily just have made the Warden more neutral since then both sides see the character they made. Similar to how Leliana can be both hardened or unhardened in DAI. She starts hardened because Justinia died, but because of your actions you get to see the Leliana you had in Origins again.

No, the fact that the Warden was a silent protagonist is the reason they aren't likely to cameo.

I've never received a letter from the warden. Does it only happen if warden and inquisitor are both Dalish? My first world state my warden was a Cousland who married Alistair and a female qunari inquisitor, second world state my warden was a human mage, and her and Alistair stayed in Grey Wardens with a Dalish inquisitor. No letter either playthru, or I just over looked it. When do you receive the letter?

lels is a oddity due to plot so i cant judge while then warden is a gesalt of x variables best to keep it simple and lore friendly.

Sides i see the term shemlen like a certain word in the african american community. Bad but is a term of endearment to some extent.

Oh and by the way Shemlen is elven for "slow one" read it in The Masked Empire so its not really a slur like Knife Ear

Ugh. Any term that calls an entire race children is not a term of endearment.

Shemlen is elven for "Quick Children" Shem being quick, len being child(ren). Children being the term applied to every race by elves except for elves themselves.

The Warden doesn't show up because BioWare didn't want to hear all the complaints about every possible combination of character not being portrayed exactly as the fans envisioned them in game.

I asked Leliana to look for my HoF (dalish) and the mission cropped up on the War Table (takes about 18 hours) and once it was done I got the letter.

Context. If an ancient elf had been alive for 1,000 years and he decided chop it up with a 50 year old ancient Tevinter Magister one calling the other a 'child' is understandable.

Flat-ear is more of a racial slur than shemlen.

Context, most people who use the term "Shemlen" especially the Dalish Warden, won't live anywhere near a 1,000 years. Just like throwing extra children out into the cold was an "okay" practice 10,000 years ago, it's not okay now. Neither is calling someone a term which is obviously offensive.

Mmmm pretty sure it was 'slow one' however its been a long time since I read TME and just recently started re-reading it so we'll see. But if it is 'quick children' then I stand corrected. :\

I tried both Dalish/Dalish and Dwarf/Dwarf. I'm wondering if my HoF mage will note on my mage Inuisitor too.

Shem is the diminutive form of Shemlen.  They're still both derogatory.

And thank ra for that.

I already have my Hawke acting like someone else I don't want the same for my warden.

To be fair, from a human perspective, them elves sure do have some sharp ears.

I'm just disappointed my Fereldan Noble Warden didn't give my Free Marcher Noble Inquisitor tips on how to properly talk down to commoners in his letter.

This is pretty much why i didn't want warden back and if they mention them it was ambiguous ,warden was blank state without any personality traits outside those picked up by player so now no suprise that many see warden out off character if bio chose to show his personality traits that they picked for them.

I believe Shem is the derogatory form of Shemlen,

Which is absolutely true; if the Dalish Warden was trying to use a derogatory term, then the Warden would have written 'shem', not the elvish word that modern Dalish attribute for humans.

Considering that the Dalish still use some elvish as part of their vernacular (as even Lavellan understands entire sentences spoken in elvish, and can speak elvish during the narrative), I really don't see what the big deal is. The Dalish Warden used the elvish term for human instead of the Andrastian counterpart; regardless of how some people feel about the Dalish, it makes sense for the Dalish Inquisitor to use elvish terms in correspondence with another one of the People.
