To me, combat in this game is far too colorful and flashy. I don't have a problem with the aesthetics, it's just far too distracting. I can't tell what's going on half the time because everything is a secured by a green light, rocks erupting from the ground, etc.

First, does anyone else agree with me on this or am I the outlier (once again)?

Second, is there any way to tone down the effects? Or does Bioware have plans to provide more options where this is concerned?

Did you set the Effects slider in the settings menu lower?  Easy to miss.

There's a graphic setting that tones then down. For performance reasons, but that might work for you. Try that?

Oh, I'm glad to hear there's a slider. this has been bugging me. Can you tone down the effects while keeping the rest of the quality as is?

Now, if only I could slow down the animations, too. DA:O's animations needed tweaking, not a 125% speed increase.

Can't look at the game right now, but it is it's own slider, and I'm pretty sure it explicitly mentions spell and ability effects. I don't know if it affects all environmental effects (fire/water/etc), however.

Tone down the effects quality a bit. Still flashy, but to me it's more pretty flashy rather than overwhelmingly flashy, not that I have an issue with the latter, just a matter of preference.. I did notice some textures started to become pixel-ed though, but I think that's because of other settings I had to optimize the game for my laptop :P

Heh, I get that. Bought a new graphics card a couple days ago because I couldn't move when it rained, lol. My problem with full effects is that it not only slowed my computer down a lot, I couldn't see portions of the fights, which is less than ideal. Don't have the speed problem now, but seeing is good. Some of the effects are less than immersive, but oh wells. Most are fine.

Setting the Effects Quality to Low not only lessens the flash and shine of spells and FX, but makes them appear more natural and immersive. Rather than appearing as the childlike fantastical works of cartoon films, they seem to appear more like the manipulation of the elements, IMO. It also helps FPS; recommended.
