Anyone else find the companions in this game better than the ones in Dragon Age: Origins?

It's pretty close.  I don't think anyone in DA:I was as compelling as Morrigan, but I think the DA:I companions are better top to bottom.  Since the games have nine companions each, many of whom share similar dynamics, let's pit them head-to head:

Bout 1: Plot-Centric SnB Warriors Who Were Much More Interesting Than They Should Have Been
Alistair v. Cassandra
Cassandra is a great character, but Alistair was revolutionary for Bioware: a male lead  who was actually interesting, breaking the Carth Onasi/Kaiden Alenko "boring drip" mold.
Winner:  Alistair, by a hair.
Round 1 to DAO.
[...]

I second your assessment except for Vivienne. As she was flat out horrible as a character (probably the worst companion I've ever seen in a BW game), she clearly loses to Wynne (which is not even close to being one of my favs).

I'm not the biggest Wynne fan either, but I agree.  At least Wynne tries to be the motherly type who give out advice, whether you like her or not.  Vivienne just flat out think she better than others and is in the Inquisition for her personal agenda. Her jealously of Morrigan and dislike of Grey Wardens also made her lose some point with me.

I don't think there needs to be any discussion to define whether Vivienne is a good character or not. She's just flat out one-note and poorly written.

Do you mean morally good? Because I found her to be pretty interesting. Would I be friends with her in real life? No, but it's nice to have a selfish party member now and then who is in it only for themselves.

No, more like good as in well-written and interesting.

Your judgement may differ of course.

Yeah I'm pretty neck and neck. Then again I really only liked Sten, Leliana, Shale and Alistair in DAO (Well yeah dog but it's...dog). In DAI I really like Cole, Iron Bull, Dorian, Josephine, Cullen and Cassandra.

So I guess DAI wins slightly? *shrug*

Neither DAO or DAI can compete with DA2 for companions I love to hate.

Even if one, for whatever reason, doesn't like Morrigan, one can impossibly have been so blind as to not realize how greatly written she was.

Good thing I didn't say she wasn't well written then no? But I had little to no interest in her (thankfully she improved in...Inquisition.) so yeah.

That said I find her writing to be good. Just like I find several other characters (Alistair, Zevran, Wynne, Bull, Cole) writing to also be good. Do I think she's better? No not really.

Opinions and all that.

Something was missing with dai companions. Hard to pinpoint. Even though there were more scenes i never felt as invested in them like i did in origins. I enjoy both set of companions tho. Varric is great in both games iron bull and cassandra were pretty good. Sera is hard to take but can be funny. Cole and solas come off as very interesting but get very boring very quickly. I like doeian but feel he was under utilized. The advisors were really good i like leliana way more in the new game. But no matter how much great stuff they did with companions in dai they can never top my love of morrigan alistair shale and sten

The reason that I particularly like the DA:I group more than the DA:O group is that the Inquisition characters are proactive, interested parties. You never get the impression that anyone in DA:O would have amounted to anything or even tried to do anything in the absence of the player character.  They certainly would not have banded together.

Morrigan was happily hiding in the wilderness.  Leilana was hiding in the chantry.  Oghren was hiding in a tavern.  Sten was a prisoner.  Shale was deactivated. Alistair was a quitter. Zevran and Loghain were working for the bad guy team.  Only Wynne was trying to do something positive and useful in your absence.  And she was about to get ganked by a Rite of Annulment.

Meanwhile..

Cassandra actively forms the inquisition. Solas and Varric have already signed up before you do (more or less). Blackwall is out trying to defend people from the fighting. Dorian is opposing the Venatori on his own. Sera and Vivienne seek you out to offer assistance.   All these characters were actively trying to stop bad stuff without needing you to make them do it. The Inquisition gave them a means to be more effective at what they were already doing.  You don't have to pull their heads out of their butts to get them to help.

The only truly fascinating companions in Origins to me were Sten and Morrigan. I really liked everyone else, but they were not that interesting. We pretty much knew all there was to know about Alistair very early on, and Wynne breaks her story to us pretty quickly too. There's Leliana, but her past wasn't exactly a staggering revelation. There's Loghain, but I find it difficult to really care about a mutually exclusive companion that you can't get until very late in the game. Also, I find the group in DA:I generally have more interesting things to say. Vivienne may be a total icy snob, but I'll take her over Wynne anyday.

I suspect that this disconnect is for the reason I gave above.  The DA:O companions (and the DA2 companions) were invested in *you*.  You were their reason for existence.

In DA:I, they aren't invested in you specifically. They are invested in the Inquisition and are surprised and pleased if they happen to like you too.

certain characters i love more than others.

I love zevran, i like dorian

I like sera more than leiliana

I hate morrigan and vivienne equally ( i think theyre well written but theyre not for me)

and then its about equal for the rest.

I felt that the character interactions with the companions were sort of lesser(?) than DAO because of the camera position, if it had been like ME id feel more involved.

I really enjoy this change of pace. I like that you're given quite a lot of power, but at the same time, it doesn't feel quite as much of a power fantasy. It always puzzles me that some might be so opposed to the idea of having advisers and such that wield authority themselves in this game as if they're totally useless, even though characters that serve as such are a sensible and logical arrangement for an organization as widespread as the Inquisition.

I prefer DA:I in that regard.  Maybe it's because I played DA:O so much that almost all the companions began grating on me and I stopped interacting with most of them eventually because I couldn't really be bothered fast clicking through all their inane lines again.  My main issue when it comes to companions in most BioWare games is their one dimensional personalities.  Something I do like about Cassandra is they've [BioWare] attempted to make her slightly open to opinions she may not necessarily agree with.  However, with the rest, it's the same old same old.  They have their stance and regardless of how well it actually benefits the cause, they will still disapprove with every pro mage/faction/belief choice if they're anti mage/faction/belief for example.

I prefer the cast overall, considering both companions and advisors.

As for just the companions I'd say it's about equal.

I find the banter is fun, but there is not enough opportunity to talk to your romanced one. I Much rather be able to click my party to talk to them. I liked the romancing much better in Original DA. I enjoy the romance part of the game but there is a big lack of it when at least romancing Blackwell. I had one close encounter but then Nothing just kisses.. How boring.. the first one was so much more fun.

I find myself getting bored now of the romance part.. I cant even ****** Blackwell off with Cullen cuz Cullen wont talk to me romantically says im involved.  Ya thats not fun.

Well anyway, Much prefer original DA. for interactions period.  And am so bored of killing dragons and things.

I always hated that click to talk anywhere thing in Origins, mainly because I was constantly accidentally initiating a dialogue with them on the field when I was just trying to loot random McDeadguy's corpse, and it was worse when it was special dialogue that might initiate after a certain point in the game. Like great I'm having this meaningful conversation while soaked in my enemies' entrails.

While I love most of the DAO companions to bits (and most of the DA2 companions, for that matter) I do think the Inquisition's inner circle is the best team we've ever had in a BioWare game. I think every one of them is great, even the ones I was indifferent to in previous games. Leliana was probably my least favourite Origins companion, and I was Cullen-neutral up until Inquisition, but both of them won me over here.

I like Alistair and Blackwall equally.

I like Morrigan and Solas equally.

I like Leliana a lot more than Sera.

I like Iron Bull more than Sten.

I like Wynne a lot more than Vivienne.

I like Cole more than Zevran.

I like Oghren and Varric equally.

I like Shale and Cassandra equally.

I like Dog and Dorian equally.

Going with this, I would say:

I like Alistair a little more than Blackwall.

I like Morrigan a little more than Solas.

I like Leliana a lot more than Sera.

I like Iron Bull more than Sten.

I like Wynne a lot more than Vivienne.

I like Cole less than Zevran.

I like Oghren less than just about any NPC in any CRPG I've played.

I like Shale and Cassandra equally.

I like Dog  and Dorian equally.

While my Warden romanced Leliana, I must say, Leliana had moments in Origins where I could almost taste the treacle. Exploring her stories was a mistake, because I now have diabetes.
