Is Dorian's side quest bugged?(Possible spoilers)

Or talking to varric/solas too soon after getting to skyhold.
Or both. Idk. I avoided both those scenarios when i restarted and was able to get the quest.from mother giselle so im happy.
Jmjfrank, have fun with that. I was so excited about this romance and i didnt want to let it sit and gather dust and hope.the next patch fixed this bug. It seemed faster and easier to just restart it. Not like it takes that long to get through the main story, which is really all i did for this playthrough.
Im speed running all my romances until i find one i really really.like. when i get done with all the romamces, i will start a new playthrough with the romance i liked most and go ham on it, getting as close to 100% as i can.

I've played through 3 times and I never get his personal quest. I also have problems with romance cards. Blackwall's always changes but Bull and Solas never do, Cullen doesn't have one.

I finally managed to get Dorian bugging out on me.
My other two playthroughs before went fine. I think I gained too much approval too fast with him.

I read somewhere, I don't remember where, that the quest doesn't trigger if you talk first to Varric and Hawke before getting Dorian's quest. It worked for me. I postponed talking to Varric & Hawke until after I got Dorian's quest solved. Plus, I did not talk to him in Haven, but I did talk to him before sentencing Alexius. I hope it helps.

As soon as you've been given control of your inquisitor in Skyhold, in its dirty, abandoned, full of rubbles, no access to the gardens and no renovations done yet state, for the first time talk to Dorian first, DO NOT talk to anyone else, it should trigger a cutscene and afterwards Mother Giselle will be waiting for you in the main hall of dirty Skyhold w/ Last Resort of Good Men quest.
I sided w/ the mages but I don't know if that affects anything. Also it seems to me that other cutscenes seem to trigger a "time-travel" effect, as once the scene is done all the rubbles in Skyhold's main hall are gone.
I've read this somewhere here in the forums, I tried it and it work for me.

Of course, the character I specifically created for romancing Dorian is the one that bugged. XP I wasn't aware of the bug until I was already 30 hours in... Any word on when this might be patched? >.<

I don't remember the exact order I did things in my first 3 playthroughs; I wasn't romancing him in any of those, and I recruited the Templars in one and conscripted the mages in the other two. In my current PT, where I'm romancing him, I exhausted all conversation options with him in Haven and didn't speak to him before speaking with any other NPC in Skyhold. In short, I did everything you're not supposed to do, except I did speak to him in Skyhold before talking to Varric, Cassandra, or Hawke. So I'm inclined to think that the bug has something to do with triggering a cutscene that leads to changes in Skyhold, as others here have speculated.
I do hope those who are having problems with it find a workaround.

I had to enter the Chantry twice for the cutscene to fire. I got the personal quest shortly after arriving at Skyhold. I recruited the rebel mages. Flirted a few times with Dorian and did all the conversation lines in Haven. After arriving at Skyhold, wandered to the Undercroft, talked to Varric, went up the tower to chat with companions (including Dorian), outside to Blackwall, which led me to Hawke nearby. Talked to Hawke. I think shortly after going back into the main hall (I think I talked again to Dorian), Mother Giselle accosted me with this quest. I did it shortly thereafter and got the empty chantry once.

It seems like Bioware could have told us a definitive workaround. Just to help us out. Nope.

I got it to trigger!
I didn't talk to him at Haven. I did "In Your Heart Will Burn" and as soon as I got control of my character in Skyhold, I spoke to him. We had the "Tevinter is at fault" conversation. I had to leave Skyhold to be able to judge anybody, and once I could, I judged Alexius. I tried this twice; once sentencing him to help Redcliffe's mages and once sentencing him to research. It didn't trigger with the Redcliffe mages option, so I'm wondering if that's a thing that bugs it out, too? Either way, I talked to Dorian about the sentence, left Skyhold again, came back, and the cut scene for the letter about Felix triggered. As soon as that finished, I got the exclamation mark for Mother Giselle. HAPPINESS!!!!!!
I'm just hoping that it won't bug again...

yeah, SilverWolf104 there is no way I am restarting my game. I had to restart the game once before because my first play through kept glitching and crashing.
For this Dorian bug I have a case open that is being "escalated" to the development team according to customer service, and a friend's friend who works for Bioware is putting a word in internally that people are getting PO'd about this issue. So far I have been waiting since Dec 19th or so..
I've been told the dev team that works on patches is out until Jan 5th, so it'll be a bit of a wait but I'm not wasting 50+ hours of play time, so I will wait.
jmjfrank, I don't typically trust people who say they have a "friend's friend" but I want to believe you so bad. SO BAD. Don't lie to me, jmjfrank. Please. I thirst for Dorian so bad, I've got sand in my mouth.

It was 'bugged' for me but in a different way.
I did receive the quest. But when I went to the tavern in Redcliffe, it was completely empty and the cutscene with Dorian's father wouldn't trigger. I had to leave the tavern and walk back in a couple of times before it finally triggered the cutscene.
You can also save in the tavern and then load that save, works for me every time

Okay, so adding my own experience to this because I'm just so heartbroken.
First time I played through the game as a female inquisitor (wanted to romance Dorian, so I spent every available second with him, always had him in my party, always checked with him whenever I returned to Haven/Skyhold after some missions, but got turned down due to my innie instead of an outie) and his personal quest triggered with no issue for me. I just kept talking to him as much as a could, then the Letter from Felix cutscene came and that made Mother Giselle give me the letter. At this point, I hadn't even started his "kill all the venatori jerks" quest. I don't think I even did any of his missions on the war table either. But, his personal quest still triggered with no issue. Unfortunately, due to my lack of desired parts, I merely kept him as my BFF and romanced the crap out of Cullen. It was magical. I cried.
Now, second playthrough. Have created a gorgeous male elf just for Dorian. Super excited to do his romance. Did everything pretty much the same as my first playthrough. Flirt with him like crazy and have even done some of his war table quests. Nothing. Wanted to know when I could romance him, came online to check how to trigger it, discovered all the complaints and warnings of glitches related to specifically this.
Here's what I've done to try and fix it (with various reloads from a save point set immediately after coming to Skyhold):
-Talked to him immediately without talking to anyone else in phase 1 of Skyhold. (No Quest)
-Talked to him immediately without talking to anyone else, and then leaving Skyhold and coming back to slightly cleaned up phase 2 of Skyhold. (No Quest)
-Talked to him and then everyone else in phase 1 Skyhold. (No Quest)
-Talked to Varric and Hawke on the ramparts. (No Quest)
-Ignored Varric and Hawke on the ramparts. (No Quest)
-Completed all Dorian's war table and venatori-kill quests to varying degrees. (No Quest)
-Judged Alexius then talked to Dorian. (No Quest)
-Waited to judge Alexius since Alexius mentions his son being dead and Dorian's letter also mentions Felix dying. (No Quest)
-Saved and loaded the game from multiple places within Skyhold, outside Skyhold, near Dorian, far from Dorian. (No Quest)
-Cried a lot. (No Quest)
The only other thing different about this second playthrough is that I've used Origin to import decisions from my DA:O and DA2. Has anyone noticed if the glitch happens with only people using Origin?

If you side with mages, do not talk to Dorian in Haven after "In Hushed whispers". Wait until Skyhold after you do "In your Heart shall burn".
You then must do everything else before talking to Hawke.
Talk to Dorian at Skyhold.
Talk to Giselle in Skyhold's garden.
Judge Alexius (if applicable)
Do Dorian's war table request, which then opens up "One less Venatori" mission.
Kill 2 out of the 3 groups of Venatori- the one's in the Hinterlands should be enough.
Go back to Skyhold and Giselle should be waiting with the letter from Dorian's father. You may need to stop by the library and talk to Dorian one last time.
All of that needs to be done before you talk to Hawke.

But when I played through the first time as a female, I didn't do any of that before talking to Hawke. I talked to Varric and Hawke, didn't do any of the Venatori kills (though the quest was unlocked), nor did I talk to Giselle in the garden, and Dorian's quest still triggered just fine all on its own. But this second time, I suddenly have to find the magic combo to unlock the letter from Giselle. And what sucks the most is that various people seem to be finding various ways to get around the glitch but they don't work for many others.
I am glad you were able to get past it, sandalisthemaker. PLEASE GIVE DORIAN WHAT I CANNOT. ![]()

Can we get confirmation from Bioware that this will be fixed in the next patch? I'm close to finishing the game but this is my canon playthrough and want to leave no stone unturned. Hurry up bioware! Great game so far.

Eek, I'm on my Dorian run now and I didn't realize this was an issue. On my first two characters I had no issue at all getting this quest to happen (both were female inquistors though). One pt had the default world state and the other one had a custom one imported from the keep. Hoping nothing messes up for this PT ><
I've played through 3 times and I never get his personal quest. I also have problems with romance cards. Blackwall's always changes but Bull and Solas never do, Cullen doesn't have one.
Solas' card doesn't change until the end and what it changes to is different if he is romanced or not romanced.

Aw, Sorry you can't unlock the quest. Sadly it just seems like there are multiple ways to keep this quest from triggering and it could have something to do with the banter/dialogue bug. At least that is what I've read. I just now managed to get Blackwall's personal quest to trigger after several playthroughs. As for Dorian, I've had a high success rate by avoiding Hawke at skyhold, speaking to Dorian once at Skyhold (usually to recruit him as I pick Templars), doing his war table stuff, killing 2/3 Venatori, and speaking to him again to get the Alexius convo cut scene. Right after that cut scene Giselle is always waiting for me in the hall.

I'm feeling both blessed and nervous that I did not encounter this bug. On the one hand, I didn't know it was bugged. I just went to say "hi" to Dorian like I usually do after making the rounds at Skyhold, witnessed him arguing with Mother Giselle, and the quest played out normally. The "friendship arc" that resulted made me adore Dorian so much that I'm now seriously considering rolling a male just to romance him.
However, I'm afraid that I might have just gotten lucky the first time and the bug will show this time. It would suck if, like many unlucky people, I went through 20-30 hours of gameplay (that I could use on a different character in a different playthrough) just to find it doesn't work. Nuts. =(

I luckily did not get the sidequest/Giselle chat trigger bug in my first playthrough. I also did not get the tavern bug on Dorian's first sidequest the FIRST time I did it. Since the dialogue wheel is horribly non-descript (to me), my PC ended up saying something stupidly out of character for him and I reloaded to a save before entering the tavern. THAT is when I got a horrible case of the tavern scene not triggering at all. Had to do all sorts of party changing, enter/re-enter, Dorian entering the tavern while you play as him, etc. to make it work.
But anyway, back to the initial issue. When I got to Skyhold, I did not talk to Varric and Hawke until I was nearly finished with the entire Hinterlands map and all its quests. I also did not Judge Alexius either. I talked to Giselle often. I talked to Dorian often (my Qunari PC sided with the mages). I talked to everyone (sans Varric and Hawke) often. I had Dorian as my main party companion throughout my gallivanting around the Hinterlands, and undoubtedly got approval increases from him by killing ventatori and whatnot. Did his war table missions when they became available ASAP. And his quest triggered smoothly. So yes, I do think it's a combination of factors related to Alexius' Judgement, not talking to Varric and Hawke, doing the war table missions, and talking with/raising influence with Dorian, and talking to Giselle often.

I'm a little confuzed as to wether i've bugged it/ruined it or not.
I did the quest to meet his father, and i gave him his amulet but all we've done is kiss. he never comes up to my room.
i did [mess] up an make alexius tranquil with out talking to dorian before judging him.. after that when i talked to dorian i got a big ass disaproval. and if it's true i did talk to verrik like right away when i got to skyhold.
i havn't killed 3 venatori yet with him. is this what i need to do or did i **** it all up? i wouldn't opposed to rerolling. i wasn't completly happy with my char's face / some of my decisions on picking talent points. but if i can still get dorian in the sack with this play thorugh let me know cuz i'd like to go a head and do that.
also if i do another play through i was thinking of using the iron bull in my party which i didn't do this time. anyone know if that's a mistake?

Does anyone know if this is actually being looked into as a bug?
#73
Posté 15 janvier 2015 - 06:22
That's not it because I've gotten it to trigger with little to no approval and had characters with very high approval be locked out of it...
If you read carefully, that's what he said. "If you have too much approval." Too much. Too high. You basically repeated what he said when you said you had it trigger with little to no approval but characters with very high approval got locked out.

The only difference with the 3rd character with the bug was the order in which I did missions. I believe there is merit to the notion that the order I do events and speeches matters. The previous 2 characters where it did work, I spoke less with dorian. I believe the 3rd I generated too high of an approval rating too early.

Yea, I am working on my Dorian romance character now and I am hoping since I am doing Templars it'll prevent me from getting this bug (as I won't be getting any approval from him until after Skyhold). But on my previous two PTs, one templar and one mage, I also didn't get the bug and I know I talked to him a bunch in Haven on my mage run through because how could I not talk to Dorian? Plus it was my Solas character and he stands right over next to Solas, so like he was right there ![]()
