On my second playthrough I encountered this bug.  I think I know what it might be triggered by.:

First time I played I exhausted almost all of his dialogue but never asked him about Alexius or Felix until we reached Skyhold and I was able to play his quest.

Second playthrough, I didn't exhaust all his dialogue but I did ask him about Alexius and Felix (edited to say that this was at Haven).  Did not get his quest to trigger at Skyhold.

Third playthrough.  I didn't talk to Dorian much until Skyhold was acquired and asked him there about Alexius and Felix.  I'd done a lot of the character quests of the other members of the party and had, obviously, talked to them before getting too far in convo with Dorian.  I had to wait until I judged Alexius and after some time past, Dorian received a letter from Felix and then told me his fate.  The very next conversation with him triggered his personal quest with his conversation with Mother Giselle.

It was 'bugged' for me but in a different way.

I did receive the quest. But when I went to the tavern in Redcliffe, it was completely empty and the cutscene with Dorian's father wouldn't trigger. I had to leave the tavern and walk back in a couple of times before it finally triggered the cutscene.

Oh, you can fix it?

Hmm, should try.

[snip]When I got to Skyhold, I did not talk to Varric and Hawke until I was nearly finished with the entire Hinterlands map and all its quests.  I also did not Judge Alexius either.  I talked to Giselle often.  I talked to Dorian often (my Qunari PC sided with the mages).   I talked to everyone (sans Varric and Hawke) often.  I had Dorian as my main party companion throughout my gallivanting around the Hinterlands, and undoubtedly got approval increases from him by killing ventatori and whatnot.  Did his war table missions when they became available ASAP.  And his quest triggered smoothly.   So yes, I do think it's a combination of factors related to Alexius' Judgement, not talking to Varric and Hawke, doing the war table missions, and talking with/raising influence with Dorian, and talking to Giselle often.

Yeah, I did something similar the first playthrough without even realizing it. After getting to Skyhold, I would always go around talking to every companion and adviser (and Giselle) before moving onto the next "main story" quest. After every trip out of Skyhold (even if I just explored a new area on the map like the Hissing Wastes), I would make the rounds talking to everyone to make sure I missed nothing before leaving to do the next thing. I would also complete everyone's missions on the War Table (except Sera and Vivienne, because that protagonist didn't like them), and go around completing as much of their personal quests as reasonably possible to at least bring up their approval, even if I didn't max it, then talk to them again to see if any approval-based cutscenes would occur.

I raised Dorian's approval fairly well, but not too high too quickly (in fact, I was surprised he liked me as much as he did as I hadn't spent that much time with them or gotten that much approval compared to the others), and it seemed to work out.

I'm going to try to duplicate what I did last playthrough with this one and hope it works out. =(

Yea, I am working on my Dorian romance character now and I am hoping since I am doing Templars it'll prevent me from getting this bug (as I won't be getting any approval from him until after Skyhold). But on my previous two PTs, one templar and one mage, I also didn't get the bug and I know I talked to him a bunch in Haven on my mage run through because how could I not talk to Dorian? Plus it was my Solas character and he stands right over next to Solas, so like he was right there :)

Yeah... it's hard to know what to do. A bug didn't activate in a previous playthrough, but you're not sure if you got lucky or there was some other factor you didn't know about, so you alter this playthrough and hope that what caused the bug to activate for other people won't activate now because you're taking precautions against the thing troubles they ran into...

*sigh*

Pretty much... visual bugs are so much better because there's no doubt when you get those.

So...they have been working on a fix for nearly two months now. Why is it taking so long??

So I'm a little upset now as I've put a ton of time into my playthrough (its my first) trying to make it completionist and making my 'canon' choices.  Origin says I've put 290 hours into the game (probably about 20 was multiplayer and I did keep the game on pause for long periods of time).  Just checked and my save game says 253 hours.  I have been playing this playthrough since the day it came out.  There is no way I am going back through my saves and looking for hour 60 or something and restarting from before Skyhold.  I've completed the Hinterlands, Storm Coast, Crestwood, Exalted Plains, Emerald Graves, Western Approach, Fallow Mire, most of the Forbidden Oasis (just have the last Ice and Spirit room left).  I've killed 6 of the High Dragons, completely upgraded my keep, and I have spent hours crafting equipment for my companions.  My character is level 20 (I think my companions are too; I know Cassandra, Varric, and Dorian are).  Main quest wise I completed through skyhold and the Grey Warden mission including the Fade.

So after killing the emerald graves dragon and the storm coast dragon I decided to do the Empress Celene quest in Hiramsharal before finishing the last two areas (that I know about Hissing Wastes and Emprise du Lion).  The quest is fun and I get all the way until the end (of course waiting until I get to dance with Dorian).  The dance with Florianne was awesome and I enjoyed the quest all the way until the end when I Josephine comes to talk to me on the balcony.  At this point I'm confused why its Josephine and not Dorian.  I google just to make sure and trying to keep myself from spoilers I find out on reddit that Josephine is the 'default' if you aren't actively pursuing someone or have enough approval with them.

So I reload a save, and figure I'll knock out the Hissing Wastes getting approval from Dorian, do his companion quest, and then just rush through Hiramsharal again.  I finished the hunting the venatori Dorian wanted but I figured I probably just didn't have enough approval and the war table told me that there were Venatori in there and Dorian gets approval when I kill Venatori so I chose that over Emprise du Lion.  I get half way through Hissing Wastes and I notice I'm not getting any approval with Dorian and I remembered I didn't get any from the Hiramsharal quest either.  (I now think it is because I have max approval with Dorian or maybe its also the bug).  I google to see if there is a limit with the approval you get from killing enemies and I find out about this bug.

The reason I went into this was because I wanted you to step into my shoes a little.  For me restarting is not an option, I've put waaaaay too much time into this and become too invested into my character, I'm not restarting from the beginning (or from before Skyhold).  I've searched google for a mod (what I loved about origins was fan-made patches that fixed stuff that you guys were never going to fix), or a console command or something that would autostart dorian's personal quest (if Iron Bull and Cole like me enough to give me their quest, and I rarely use them, I'm 99.9% certain that I have the approval that it should have started already).  I know you guys are working on a patch and thank you for that, but please have a fix for those of us currently in a playthrough.  I don't want to start over now that I've gone this far into the game.

I am going to take a break from inquisition from a while, hopefully this will be fixed in the next couple months.  Is there anyway you can give us a console command that we can use as a hotfix?  Thank you for taking the time to read this :)

so i know it's alot of other things bugging it out but this is what i did on my 2 PTs

First: Dorian an i are romanced but no further than kissing. no dorian in my quarters scene.

  • Picked mages
  • exusted dorians dialog in Haven
  • judge alexius and made him a tanquil and took a big negative hit from dorian
  • did the redclicf tavern quest to meat his father
  • got back to skyhold we kissed
  • did the medalion op and gave it to him
  • the end

Second: Dorian an i are romanced, and we've banged one out in my quarters, and i've gotten a few more romance options here and there in other story parts, like a dance at the ball.

  • picked mages
  • didn't talk to him untill skyhold
  • judge alxius to do research
  • did redclif quest and kissed
  • did the medalion quest and gave it to him
  • banged

all is good and it seems like i still have some good scenes with him and the game seems to recognize us as a couple pretty solidly. only thing i've not completed is the kill 3 venatori quest in either play through. i can't find the 3rd venatori lol. but i'll figure that out and it's not dire anymore.

Know this wont be much help, but that's what happened for me, GL guys and sorry to hear some of you have invested so much in to a PT to find out you don't get to have the full romance for dorian. he is worth it tho!

I had the same problem. I completed everything up to "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts", but Dorian's second quest "Last Resort of Good Men" never triggered for me. When it still didn't trigger after "Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts" I thought it must be a bug.

And from what I've read the bug appears if Dorian's approval rating is already too high when you get Skyhold. So I gave it a try, downloaded Ehamloptiran's DAI SaveGame Editor from http://daitools.free...2366.html#p2366 and lowered Dorian's approval rating from 125 (maximum) to 63 in my most current save game. Then I talked to Dorian and -tada- the scene with him getting a letter from Felix triggered and Mother Giselle was waiting to talk with my Inquisitor in the main hall. :)

I FINALLY got this quest to trigger yesterday. Just wanted to post here since it's still an active topic, and it might help someone. In my own experience and from what others have said, the bug seems to have something to do with having the right amount of approval from Dorian--not too little, and not too much. What worked for me was to run the "Dorian's Request" and "A Friend from Qarinus" War Table missions (which both garner approval from Dorian), go to the Hinterlands and kill ONE group of Venatori with Dorian (great approval), then return to Skyhold and talk to Dorian. That got me the Felix cutscene.

This would explain why people who recruited Dorian at Haven are having trouble, because they may already have too much approval by the time they reach Skyhold. I sided with the Templars this playthrough, so I didn't talk to Dorian until Skyhold. Therefore the "Corypheus must be stopped" line didn't seem to matter like other people say. Talking to other people before Dorian at Skyhold also didn't affect anything for me; in fact, the in the save I got it to work in, I had already talked to everyone, including Varric on the battlements. What DID seem to matter is whether I completed the One Less Venatori mission. Resolving the quest completely did not get me the scene! Maybe the amount of approval you can get just from that mission and regular conversation is already above the limit.

So, I would say if you sided with the Templars, try what I did. Save before each new action and talk to Dorian in between, and see if that works. If you sided with the Mages, it seems it's possible to trigger the quest almost immediately from obtaining Skyhold, so try talking to Dorian, leave and come back, and repeat if necessary. From what others here have said, it seems if you progress the story too far you're locked out forever. If you've got a save near Skyhold's discovery, don't give up! It's there, it just takes some effort and patience. Here's hoping for a timely patch!

On my second playthrough I encountered this bug.  I think I know what it might be triggered by.:

Second playthrough, I didn't exhaust all his dialogue but I did ask him about Alexius and Felix (edited to say that this was at Haven).  Did not get his quest to trigger at Skyhold.

This was exactly what happened to me, I didn't talk to him about Alexius at Haven in my first playthrough but I exhausted all the conversations in my second, so I think that's what the bug is?

Hmm, I'm on my third pt and I am experiencing this bug for the first time, of course it would be on the toon I wanted to do his romance with :/ I have some earlier saves and I'll go back and give this a try. On my previous 2 PTs I able to get the quest to go see his dad pretty much right after arriving at skyhold after I talked to him once (mage and templar didn't matter). It's certainly super frustrating. I just heard the nobles in Skyhold do the "confirmed bachelor I hear" lines and i was all like "not from lack of trying!" QQ

I play DAI on PC and managed to managed to get Dorian's quest two playthroughs in a row. If it helps, I'll share what factors they both had in common.

Like what other people have suggested, I don't exhaust his dialogue at Haven, don't ask him about Alexius or Felix, and don't judge Alexius at Skyhold until after I get his personal quest. Also, I don't max his approval as fast as I can. Someone said a few posts up that raising his approval too quickly can cause his personal quest and/or cutscene before his personal quest not to activate, and I think there's something to it. Leliana's personal quest had a similar issue in DAO, where if you showered her with too many gifts and praise too quickly after she joined her Marjolaine quest didn't activate.

Don't know if that at all helps (especially if you aren't playing on PC), but there it is.

Do you know if you can use the aavegame modifier on the ps4 save file?

This sadly didn't work for me :( So frustrating. I'm playing on the PS4 too so i can't try the file editing thing someone else suggested. I've tried every variation of thing I can think of but not luck. Considering just blowing this toon up and trying again :(

How to fix empty Tavern bug-

First - Make quest active in your Journal

2nd - Goto some different area with Dorian and then re-enter Tavern again...

This fixed the problem for me....

As of Patch 1.03, this is no longer an issue for me; I finally got the cutscene about Felix's letter and the conversation with Mother Giselle!

Hope it works for everyone! :D

OMG! Did it come out for the PS4?

Where were you in the game - were you very advanced? What did you have to do to trigger it - just go to Skyhold?

I'm pretty sure the patch is multiplatform, so yes, you should have it on PS4 too but maybe it isn't out yet.

I'm about 60 hours in. And I went to talk to Dorian, got his cutscene about Felix and then, mother Giselle was in the hall. :)

I play on the PS4 and it seems to be fixed for me. I had already talked to Hawke in Skyhold, talked to the Warden in Crestwood, and did pretty much everything in Crestwood as well. Of course, then I binged on all of the Dorian content and went through everything (except the specific dialogue after certain events obviously). So I'd suggest spreading stuff out a bit more unless you are already pretty close to the end of the game anyway ;)

My PS4 isn't even giving me the option to download a patch 1.03. So I think this is only for PC or something. Can you guys tell me in what platform and market you are (I'm Ps4, USA)?

Any news on when this will come out to everyone?

I'm USA as well, and I didn't get any indication of needing to dl a patch either (which was weird). But I went and killed two of the Ventori groups for his quest and then everything worked when it hadn't before (I had a lot of save points from trying to get it to work).
